Grave of the Fireflies, hands down. It is a timelessly powerful story.
Though what I call "the best" and what I call "my favorites" are entirely different shows!
My Favorites:
Television: Marmalade Boy, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Azumanga Daioh, Kimagure Orange Road
OAV: Magic User's Club
Movie: Porco Rosso, Millennium Actress, Gundam Char's Counterattack

To throw in my 200 yen's worth:

Ghost in the Shell, in all it's incarnations, is wonderful. I'm about half way through "2nd Gig" at the minute and enjoying evey second.

Most of Studio Ghibli's stuff is enjoyable, particularly Whisper of the Heart and Only Yesterday. Oh, and Spirited Away, of course.

Recently enjoyed Otomi Zoshi (only seen the first 13), Cowboy Bebop, Gilgamesh and Last Exile.

I must admit, my viewing choices do tend to be based on whatever Play.com or HMV are doing cheap....

Hmm..I really liked Ninja Scroll, Akira, and Princess Mononoke (as well as other Miyazaki movies).

As for shows..i would have to say Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist, Outlaw Star, Bleach, Naruto, and Dragonball (Z,GT), Samurai Champloo.

Favorite Animes

Anime to me can be organized into two groups - Hayao Miyazaki and everything else. From jaw-dropping epic tales to a simple warm-hearted story, Miyazaki's movies are a gift for all mankind. As for other animes, I would have to recommend the Rurouni Kenshin prequel OVA entitled Samurai X in English or るろうに剣心追憶編 in Japan (correct me if I'm wrong with that). But beware, the English dub is absolutely horrid lol.

I also just got done watching Love Hina (ラブ ひな) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's probably your best bet, along with the Tenchi Muyo series, for a slapstick romantic comedy.

But in staying with the topic of the thread my favorite anime is most definitely Castle of Cagliostro (カリオストロの城) which is a Lupin flick done by Miyazaki.

- Ouran High School Host Club (Just couldn't stop laughing and squeeling with this one
- Mushishi (very mystical and tragic, gotta love it)
- Get Backers (Even though teh story can be a bit weird at times, you gotta love teh characters. Each and everyone has their special side and has always an appealing point)
- DeathNote (Though I think the manga is better, I still love L so much in this one <3)

apart from this i loved evangelion so much.i recommend SCRAPPED PRINCESS to everyone. really really
