"Too Good!? Kenshi Yonezu's Medalist Illustration Sparks Buzz"

From the weekly manga ranking surveyed by Nippan as of January 28, we spotlight Medalist (Kodansha) by Ikada Tsuruma, which ranked 2nd. With its anime adaptation airing from January 2025, its popularity is rapidly increasing, making it one of the hottest manga right now.
Set in Nagoya, Medalist tells the story of young girls dedicating their lives to figure skating and the coaches who support them. It realistically portrays the rigorous nature of figure skating—where athletes typically need to start as early as 3–4 years old to compete at a high level—and delves into topics like career longevity and post-retirement paths. The series also includes character-driven explanations of techniques and rules, making it accessible even for those unfamiliar with the sport.
Ikada Tsuruma's work is an artistic masterpiece, filled with emotionally powerful dialogue that inspires readers and deeply realistic psychological portrayals of the characters. The skating scenes, spread across full-page illustrations, are breathtaking, capturing both the dynamic motion on the ice and the illusion of time standing still as viewers are mesmerized by a performance.
The manga's ability to depict the intricate movements and expressive artistry of figure skating on paper is remarkable. A judge for the Kodansha Manga Awards even remarked, "The anime may not be able to surpass the manga," leading some readers to worry that the adaptation might fail to preserve its brilliance. However, after the anime's first episode aired on January 4, reactions on X (formerly Twitter) included numerous comments like "I cried from episode 1," and many original fans were relieved, saying, "The expressive power hasn't been lost in the anime."
The anime incorporates motion capture, mapping real figure skaters' movements onto the characters. Additionally, Akiko Suzuki, an Olympic figure skater for Japan, oversaw the choreography, reflecting the meticulous effort put into the production.
The opening theme, BOW AND ARROW, gained attention when singer Kenshi Yonezu offered to compose it himself. The opening video, released on YouTube, surpassed 4.2 million views within two weeks. The lyrics also contain references to figure skating and themes reminiscent of Medalist, drawing in even more viewers.
Furthermore, two-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu mentioned during his official YouTube membership stream that he watched the anime and admitted, "I cried at the part with the mother." Receiving praise from all directions, Medalist continues to gain momentum and is undoubtedly worth checking out.
