I found Dark Water very scary, but not as scary as Ringu. I definately would recommend this film, as it has the scary, creepy moments like in Ringu!
I definately thought it very good. In fact I liked Dark Water more than Ju-On....but that is just my opinion...

What are your favourite

.
Here are some old movies from Japan.

The Sisters of the Gion (1979)

Sansho the Bailiff (1955)

Street of Shame (1956)
(Akasen chitai)

Ahh! Excellent! Then I shall look forward to Dark Water when it comes out! And while I'm thinking about it, wasn't there a sequel to Ju-on?

Yes, there is a Ju-On 2, however, it is not as good as the first one....Ju-On 2 is a bit different, but still scary though...

This is a good idea, but I am afraid it is a big task to sort out all mentioned Japanese films..., so I don't think there are people who want to make that kind of comprehensive list unless they have the whole day off or something...

Alright, you guys better appriciate this. Especially you, JackInBox! I went through all the posts, and tried to pick out only japanese movies. I also tried to provide the japanese names whenever I could, with the english in paranthesis. For that reason, I'm sorry if there happen to be a couple duplicates. And sorry if I happened to miss one or two. If I did, let me know, and I'll add it. Also let me know if you find any typos, non-japanese movies, or other mistakes, and I'll be sure to edit/remove them. 👍

Heh, what can I say? Truth be told, I love listing and ordering things, so it wasn't that big of a deal. ^.^ Time consuming, yeah, but I was off work today, and had nothing better to do while on the internet.

HA! Tell you what. You buy the movies, and send them to me, and I'll review it. Then everyone wins 👍

Very impressive Japanimaniac!! *respect* I'll tell you if there are any J-films missing... :-)

I think I remember in the course of my movie listing that someone mentioned a chinese movie called The Eye. Well, I watched it last night (or, well...this morning, heh), and just wanted to say that I really liked it!

At first I found myself wishing that the movie was more about her getting her sight back, because I found the whole psychology thing with the doctor really interesting, but the ghost in the caligraphy room got my attention well enough. :p And the big accident at the end was sad...

Agree!! Although "The Eye" isn't a Japanese movie, I liked it too!

I also have "The Eye II" on DVD, which is also very scary, however, it is NOT a sequal to the original, I don't know why it is called "The Eye", as the plot is totally different from the first one, but I guess it is because it was directed by the Pang brothers (again).....I really liked "The Eye II", as it was very scary, and the plot was good too....

Well, my list of Japanese movies is pathetically small compared to Japanamaniac's, but her it is anyway:

Destroy All Monsters
Godzilla
Ju-on
Millennium Actress (anime)
Perfect Blue (anime)
Princess Blade
Ringu
Ringu 2
Rodan
Spirited Away (anime)
Tomie
Tomie: Another Face
Tomie: Forbidden Fruit
Tomie: Rebirth
Tomie: Replay
Uzumaki
Zero Woman
Zero Woman: Assassin Lovers
Zero Woman: Dangerous Game
Zero Woman: Final Mission

Now, here's one I'm sure very few, if not any of you ever heard of: Call Girl, starring Mie of Pink Lady (the one on the left in the avatar pic). It came out in 1982, little over a year after Pink Lady broke up, in the movie, Mie played a hooker who, according the plot, sold herself for money to rescue her lover from bad guys.

Basically it's a soft porn flick (not much nudity, but a fair amount of moaning in bedroom scenes) with Mie's character hopping in the sack with nearly half a dozen guys. Quite a stunning turnaround from one half of the famously wholesome pop act that captivated Japan in the late 70's. I was lucky enough to get a dub of a dub on tape from a friend in Hong Kong a few years ago.

As far as I know, Call Girl has never been re-released on DVD (I've joked with PL fans that an embarrassed Mie bought the master and burned it! HA!), so I don't know if it can be found anywhere, not even online. I'd love it if did, complete with English subtitles so I could follow the story better!
:-)

Heh, don't worry, jeff. I haven't seen that many. That's just a list of all the ones mentioned in this thread. I might have seen...five out of that list. So you beat me. :p

In Australia, SBS showed a japanese movie called 'Monday'. It's about a guy who got drunk in a Yakuza building..and he can't get out of the building because he's drunk(and the yakuza members wont let him escape.)..Then, one of the Yakuza member invited him to drink man to man in a room. The guy found a shotgun inside a locker and shot the Yakuza.

He ended up in the hotel. He doesn't remember anything until he watched the news , about him being a wanted man.

Quite like it.. ^^;; it's funny, the ending sucks though.

Also, i watched a 'J-rock' movie. I dont know the title but the main character are called 'Guitar wolf'. They fight Zombies and Aliens..

Anyone heard of it? ^^;

why don't one of you wallies reply to "What movevi is this?" you are happy to outchat each other and say i love this and htat but not one of you want to help me find the movie I LOVE!!! Please Help

Well, Miss A., your list is much more impressive than mine, but then, I'm only just starting out. In the anime category, forgot to mention that I have the following:

Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence
Perfect Blue

As for horror, while the Tomie series is hardly the last word in Japanese horror films, it appealed to me from day one since it's unlike anything I've ever seen before. The idea of a malevolent teenage girl who keeps coming back to life after being murdered to kill and terrorize people did her wrong was pretty novel to me. I mentioned in another post that I'm surprised Hollywood hasn't snatched up Tomie to remake like they had Ringu and Ju-on as the teen slasher aspect alone would appeal to Hollywood types!

👍

in fact I saw a lot of movies, but the one I like most is not completely japanese, I mean the last samurai. I really appreciate the soul of the samurai , how great they are.
but regarding totally japanese movies, I liked nurse station, which was a very nice comedy movie
