I can't remember if I commented in this post but I will add 2 (more?) cents.
I definitely like it subbed rather than dubbed. I go out of my way to get content that's not dubbed. The main reason for me is simply because I'm studying Japanese and I want to hear the Japanese spoken naturally. When used as a study aid, I don't watch the movies in quite the same way as when one 'watches movies'. I make sure I quickly skim/flick the subtitles just so I get the general meaning, then try to focus on the picture as I normally would and experience the movie as best as possible via the spoken dialogue.
I find when I watch other foreign films there is this pattern of completely ignoring the actors speech and just reading instead. In fact sometimes I catch myself sitting there for minutes at a time just reading what's at the bottom of the screen and missing 80% of the visual content. I also noticed when I watch normal Western movies with English subtitles 'on' for the benefit of Japanese friends, that despite knowing the language my eyes gravitate towards the subtitles for some reason, maybe that's just me though.
Anyway, subtitles on, but just a really quick glance and then I try to match the meaning to the words.
