Macross is one of the great series of the 1980s, second only to gundam in the big mecha franchise, but in a world of its own. It built itself on attempting a realistic portrail of war, which gundam did not do. Main Characters were killed regularly, there was no glamor involved. The best and coolest pilot ever dies pretty early on (Roy Fokker) unlike in gundam where Char and Amuro can't really die. The next ace pilot, Max Jenius is a bumbling nerd who is pretty cool in his own right but not in the world. The story had a huge love triangle to it, had BY FAR the best music for its day. Many of Minmay's songs are still catchy and they are from the 1980s. Music was so very important to the series, and it was choreographed really well. And then there were the mecha designs, Functional, well thought out, they attempted to be fairly realistic, unlike gundam.
DO NOT WATCH ROBOTECH. It pretty well took Shoji Kawamori's (the same guy who did Evangeleon) storyline and hacked it up and made something completely different based on two other japanese series... genesis climber mosepeadia and I can't remember what the other one's name was. The Macross DVD set costs like 200 $ but if you want the general gist of it, there was a movie made called "Macross: Do you remember love" You can download it off of Kazaa as a fansub because you cannot buy it anymore in North America. It is ranked as one of the great anime movies ever made.
Macross plus is the version most people know in north america. Its actually more deep than people give it credit for. PEople see it as just a mecha fighting OVA/Movie (the movie is better) but the plotlines of the three main characters is supurb. IT also features maybe one of the greatest heroic acts in Anime history... I won't give it away but if you see it nothing comes close to what one character does. I can discuss it here but if most people haven't seen it than I don't want to ruin it. Its absolutely spectacular. Try to get the subtitled Movie version, Kawamori himself believes it is better than the 4 part OVA.
Next there is Macross 7 which came out as a TV series at the same time that Macross plus was released in Japan. Most westerners hate MAcross 7, while most Japanese think its an really good series. ITs a bit out there, but I personally liked it and its got the best music of all the macross series. ITs more focuses on personal development of the characters than the mecha aspect like Macross plus.
Right now there is a Macross revival going on in Japan. Its partly due to the release of a new series called macross zero, a prequel to the first macross TV series. Its actually pretty good and it features ultra cool Roy Fokker as one of the main characters.
All macrosses have deeep character development and Shoji Kawamori is just a master at what he does. I don't see anymore Evangeleons coming out, but he continues to make Macrosses because they are so very interesting. There is always a struggle about what is right and wrong, and characters just struggling to survive. Having WICKED mecha doesn't hurt either. It goes without saying that Macross is probably my favorite anime
