What are your favorite Japanese movies?

Well, Miss A., your list is much more impressive than mine, but then, I'm only just starting out. In the anime category, forgot to mention that I have the following:

Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence
Perfect Blue

As for horror, while the Tomie series is hardly the last word in Japanese horror films, it appealed to me from day one since it's unlike anything I've ever seen before. The idea of a malevolent teenage girl who keeps coming back to life after being murdered to kill and terrorize people did her wrong was pretty novel to me. I mentioned in another post that I'm surprised Hollywood hasn't snatched up Tomie to remake like they had Ringu and Ju-on as the teen slasher aspect alone would appeal to Hollywood types!

Yes, I must admit I do have a big collection of Japanese dvds...I also have Chinese and Korean horror films too (which I didn't mention in my list).

About the Tomie films:
I only have one Tomie-film, which is "Forbidden Fruit", and I did enjoy watching it, however, I didn't find it scary at all - I found it funny, as I haven't seen any film like it.
The reason I haven't purchased the other Tomie-films is a simple one: I didn't like the reviews and some acquaintances told me not to purchase them..
What do you think of the other Tomie-films Jeff? Do you really recommend them? Maybe I should revise my thoughts about the Tomie-films? Or?

Well, I had read the original manga (which is damn hard to find these days, don't ask why) and found it gory, violent and scary, that was what attracted me to the first movie. Tomie was moody, violent and blood splattered, I guess that the quirky nature of it all was what attracted me to it in the first place. It wasn't as scary as the manga, but it had its moments.

As for recommendations, perhaps you should start with the first movie which I thought was the best of the lot while I thought that "Forbidden Fruit" was easily the weakest of the bunch. The fourth installment, "Another Face" was an analogy with three vignettes of Tomie at her malevolent, seducing best. Like I said, the series is nowhere near as great as Ringu, but I found it enjoyable for the eerie sort of atmosphere they all had. But then, I'm weird, so perhaps my taste is seriously lacking!

At the very least, check out the first movie. After that, you can form your own opinion on the rest of the series. Hopefully, that was of some help to you.

The pleasure was all mine, Miss A. I look forward to your opinion on Tomie which I kinda equate to some of the wacky cult horror movie favorites here in the States. But that's just my opinion!
