This is a metaphor which draws upon fishing for imagery. A fisherman attracts fish with bait, which is attached to a hook, suspended by a fishing line and submerged by a sinker.

To say something has been taken "hook, line and sinker", then, means that a person has overenthusiastically accepted an argument - and generally a dishonest or sophistic argument. In other words, it is to completely buy into a sales pitch. To fall prey to a scheme. To allow oneself to be duped by a charlatan.

I usually write comments, consulting English dictionaries. Yet I often fail to find appropriate words. Particularly on sensitive issues, I may use irrelevant words. In such cases, I'd like to apologize in advance.

For me, colloquial expression is harder than formal expression.

We frequently hear the word "suicide bombing" in the news. Even on some TV programs, we occasionally hear this word used as a metaphor.

Japan has a unique philosophy called "harakiri aesthetics". I thought that most Japanese and some pro-Japanese foreigners knew harakiri-related culture well.

But I have recently known that some Japanese and few foreigners understand this philosophy. So, let me explain about the philosophy a little, though it is too much to well-informed Japanese. For some time in the past, I was a typical "ideal Japanese". And I know so well how Japanese bureaucrats feel.

<< HYPOTHESIS >>

1. I think that Vice Defense Minister Takeaki Moriya is an excellent bureaucrat. If I had been him, I would have done the same thing. Mr. Moriya invented the knockabout in the Defense Ministry and the defense minister and the prime minister simply acted and spoke according to the scenario.

2. The scandal in the defense ministry had an impact on the Japanese politics. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe replaced the defense minister. Shortly after that, the Abe administration lost the Upper House election.

3. Once again, the leadership of the prime minister is questionable. Was the replacement of the defense minister a failure? Is Prime Minister's leadership in question? The government did need some scapegoat. Then, the vice defense minister, a person in the turmoil, got an idea of resignation.

4. The important difference between excellent bureaucrats and ordinary bureaucrats begins here. The outgoing vice defense minister thought of the way of resignation as his final, biggest and best contribution to the central government.

He was obsessed with how to boost the approval rating of the Abe administration. His conclusion was as follows.

He raises an ugly quarrel with the defense minister about his own dismissal. The minister is calm but cannot control the turmoil. Finally, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe intervenes and makes a courageous decision like a knight on white horse.

5. There have been quite a many similar cases, but now I remember only one case. It is a political knockabout over the replacement of the then Foreign Minister Makiko Tanaka in January 2002. As far as I know, this kind of knockabout began there.

(1) the facts about Ms. Tanaka's dismissal (See Note 1)

From April 2001 to January 2002, Tanaka was the first female foreign minister of Japan, but was fired from the cabinet after making remarks critical of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

In September 2001, Ms. Tanaka inadvertently leaked classified information of the US to journalists just after the 9/11 attacks. But Mr. Koizumi failed to dismiss her and the scandal lingered.

In January 2002, Ms. Tanaka antagonized the then vice foreign minister over the participation of some NGOs to the Afghanistan Reconstruction Conference. She also quarreled with Mr. Suzuki, Chairman of the Lower House Committee on Rules and Administration.

On January 29th, 2002, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi dismissed all the three persons all together.

From February 17th to 23rd, 2002, President Bush officially visited Japan, South Korea, and China. He had postponed this visit due to the 9/11 attacks (See Note 2).

(2) the aim of the knockabout replacement

After the 9/11, some people looked at Japan suspiciously. Mr. Bush finally decided to visit Japan. Japan wanted to avoid a serious debate. Japan tried to convince the Bush administration that there were no alternative prime minister other than Mr. Koizumi.

Mr. Koizumi replaced problematic politicians and plunged stock prices (See Note 3) and his own approval ratings just before President Bush's visit.

He emphasized a Japan in turmoil. But he absolutely had to avoid people's impression that he made an arrangement for Mr. Bush. So, he staged the political knockabout.

In Japan, performance of politicians and bureaucrats is always conducted following some scenarios. Those scenarios are made for making arrangement in favor of its counterpart and for letting people feel that Japan never bows to its counterpart. This is the root cause of the elusive politics.

6. the aim of the knockabout this time

This time, Defense Minister Yuriko Koike was called to the US and the head of the leading opposition party, the Democratic Party of Japan, Ichiro Ozawa, was called to the US Embassy in Japan.

The current situation is very similar to the situation in which the then foreign minister was replaced in 2002.

This time, former Defense Minister Fumio Kyuma was replaced with Yoriko Koike due to a slip of the tongue. The vice defense minister was replaced due to internal bickering.

This time again, arrangement was made in favor of the US and few people felt that Japan bowed to the US.

Stock prices fell again (See Note 4). The world would think that Japan is in turmoil and that it could really be a disaster to force Japan into a corner. Japan really hopes so.

===="I love you." is an artful excuse.

It is natural for a man to say to his girlfriend, "I love you." But, when we think about it carefully, we find that it is a well-made expression. He says it in the present tense. Therefore, however he loved another woman yesterday, or he will love another woman tomorrow, the man will be able to say, "I didn't tell a lie."

On the contrary, if the man once says, "I love you forever," he bears the risk of being accused of telling a lie or betraying his girlfriend.

So, a smart man rarely adds the word "forever".

But, if the man who once said, "I love you forever," changes his mind, loves another woman or gets divorced, what will happen to him?

Naturally, he will be regarded as a betrayer and will lose credibility.

The same thing happens in the social agreement. But, on this point, Japan made a mistake in the past. The mistake is a really serious mistake for some people, but is a major relief to others.

It is Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution.

Japan forever renounces war and use of force. If Article 9 of the Constitution is devised as the Abe administration hopes, Japan's credibility will come into question. Then it will be meaningless to read the Constitution carefully, because it can be changed into any kind of Constitution at any time.

But the real problem doesn't stop there. The Japanese military understands the circumstances and orchestrates a conspiracy of dominating the world without the use of force. It can be easier to defend a frontal attack, but not easy to defend a conspiracy in the seamy side of the world, let alone a large-scale conspiracy by a country.

Japanese politicians and mass media make little reference to the issue. Most Japanese are unaware of the conspiracy. The Constitution would be revised in the confusion at the moment, for sure. But, if Japan crosses the line, it would never be able to come back as a leading advanced country.

In the previous posting, I said that if a man promises his girlfriend he will love her forever, he bears the risk of being accused of telling a lie or betraying her. However, there can be yet some tricky loopholes.

(1) Female helpers can be employed as necessary.

(2) The range of work for the helpers will be decided later.

(3) If neighbor females are in trouble with their household burdens, or in emergency, I can help and support them. I always think about my wife.

(4) Criteria for the help and support are set later.

These four clauses above are figurative expressions for part of the constitutional amendment proposed by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (See Note 1, 2).

The constitutional amendment proposal doesn't delete nor revise the war renunciation clause. But it adds some clauses. I compared the political agenda to the agenda of a womanizing man and I put figurative expressions above, because it is easier to read the figurative expressions to understand the major point of the constitutional amendment.

If a man tries to make such a promise to his wife, he will get a slap for sure. It is apparent that these clauses presuppose some romance.

On the contrary, when it comes to the Constitution, things go on smoothly. It's strange.

I've read the amendment proposal carefully for the first time. Mass media rarely show the full text or rarely give an explanation of the amendment. Even in the Internet, it is confusing, because vertically written Japanese context is expressed horizontally on the web site. Some may misunderstand. I think few Japanese understand correctly.

The basic idea for Japan's Constitution and laws is similar to the figurative analogy below.

"Now that I love you in my mind, I never betray you whatever I do."

Once the Constitution is amended in this way, Japan will be able to forge a military alliance as it did with Italy and Germany before World War II.

It's scary.

In the Seoul National Capital Area, there are 27 bridges across the Han River. One of the bridges, the Seongsu Bridge, collapsed on October 21, 1994 (See Note 1). On the very day, the US and North Korea signed an important agreement on nuclear issues in Geneva.

North Korea accedes to the nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1985. North Korea announces its intention to withdraw from the NPT in 1993. In response, the US declares sanctions. The relationship is strained at once. On June 15, 1994, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter negotiates a deal with North Korea in which Pyongyang confirms its willingness to ﾂ"freezeﾂ" its nuclear weapons program and resume high-level talks with the United States (See Note 2).

Everything seems to go well, but leader of North Korea Kim Il-sung suddenly dies on July 8. Some believe that he was killed (See Note 3). His son, Kim Jong-il, succeeds Kim Il-sung. North Korea again reaches an agreement with the US on the nuclear issue on October 18. The signing ceremony is scheduled for October 21st. On the day of signing, the Seongsu Bridge collapses.

I found this story while I examined the collapse of I-35W Mississippi River bridge in Minneapolis. This bridge is well-known for its collapse.

In 1914, Japan invaded the islands, then formally took over under the Treaty of Versailles after the WWI German defeat (See Note 1).

In 1944, the US forces fought the Japanese forces to capture an airstrip on Peleliu, an island in the island nation of Palau, during WWII. The battle cost about 13,000 lives on both sides (See Note 2).

In 1947, Palau became a UN trusteeship, administered by the U.S. (See Note 1).

In 1977, a balanced cantilever prestressed concrete box girder bridge with a main span of 240.8 m and total length of 385.6 m (1265 ft) was built by Socio Construction. It was designed by Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG (German construction company). It was called "Koror-Babeldaob Bridge" (See Note 3).

In 1994, the UN terminated the trusteeship. Palau attained independence (See Note 1).

On September 28, 1996, Koror-Babeldaob Bridge collapsed (See Note 3).

In 1997, its construction began by Kajima Corporation, a Japanese construction company, and was completed in December, 2001 (See Note 3).

=== Suspicions ===

1. Quite a many Japanese web sites explain the collapse of this bridge. But, as Wikipedia explains, most of the explanations are false and exaggerated. Their criticism against South Korea smells of hidden intention. There are many web sites that blatantly express false information in Japanese particularly with regard to certain countries. Japan has had such history for many years. Japan knows that false written information becomes the evidence of history in the future, because there will be less evidence that can be used to vindicate the truth in the future (See Note 4).

I began to investigate the collapse of the Seongsu Bridge in Seoul when I read the false Japanese information on Palau.

2. The climate is rather calm in Palau. But a gust occasionally blows. According to the Guam observation point, the nearest observation point to Palau that offers weather information in the Internet, the strongest wind last month was 51 mph. Under these circumstances, it is natural that a bridge which gradually erodes collapses during storms or typhoons. It is unusual that such a bridge suddenly collapses on an ordinary day (See Note 5).

3. The name of the new bridge is too good to be true. It is unusual for a donor nation to be pleased to see its name in the name of the new bridge.

4. I don't think that the collapse of Palauan bridge have anything to do with the collapse of the bridge in Seoul.

5. Before the collapse of the KB Bridge, JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) carried out an inspection. It cannot be denied that Japan is also responsible for the collapse. Since Palau's independence, Japan's influence has been increased.

6. At that time, Japan was eager to show the power of the Japanese construction industry. South Korea was catching up Japan in some industries. Japan had a motive for the conspiracy (See Note 6).

7. September 28, the day of the collapse, was the date, 13 days after the amphibious operation in the Battle of Peleliu, when fierce battles were fought between the US and the Japanese forces (See Note 2).

8. The Palauan national flag is very similar to the Japanese flag (See Note 1).

In the previous posting, I talked about the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge. Many websites say that Koreans built the bridge. But their comments are untrustworthy just because they are Japanese and just because they say in favor of Japan.

Japanese know that they will be bullied in their society if they say in favor of foreigners such as Koreans, Chinese, Americans and British. There are few people who talk back like me because they know they will be ill-treated by their employers.

The international community may think that most Japanese spontaneously behave that way. This misunderstanding contributes to the hidden suppression of free speech. The trick is so subtle that they are doubly guilty (See Note 1).

This time, let me show one understandable example of fabrication.

Yamato and her sister ship Musashi were the largest, heaviest, and most powerful battleships ever constructed, weighing 72,802 tons at full load (See Note 2). There are many things to talk about this ship. But the problem is the location where she sank (See Note 3).

Since 1945, it has been said that Yamato sank near Tokunoshima Island. The Battleship Yamato Memorial Tower was erected in April 1968 on Cape Inutabu, located in the southwest part of the small island of Tokunoshima (height; 24 meters, See Note 4, 6). Most Japanese websites give almost the same information. I don't know a nation where people are so indifferent to the facts except Japan.

Once I made a complaint to the local worker about the falsification of important information. He said, "It's OK. Japan is a country of myth." I am surprised at Japanese anachronism. They don't distinguish mythology from historical facts. For them, not the facts but what others say is important.

The wreck of Yamato was discovered and explored with an underwater submersible in 1985. Today Yamato lies at 30-22 N, 128-04 E in the depth of 1.410 feet about 50 miles southwest of Kyushu , Japan (See Note 5).

1. On April 1945, Yamato was dispatched to Okinawa for her final mission. But she was already chased by American submarines. The Japanese codes were deciphered by the US navy. The US navy staged a fierce attack on Yamato off the southwest coast of Kyushu Island. She sank there. She didn't reach the sea area off the coast of Tokunoshima Island (See Note 2).

2. After the wreck of Yamato, it was easy to identify her location because the US navy had the accurate information (See Note 2).

3. The mushroom cloud of Yamato was seen from Kagoshima, the southern part of Kyushu Island, which is 200 kilometers from the site (See Note 2).

4. More than 200 Japanese sailors on Yamato survived. They knew the location of the wreck site (See Note 2).

5. In 1985, the location was announced. But I think that it was announced just because it became possible to explore the reck due to the development of submarine technology (See Note 5).

6. The government couldn't inform the people about the wreck of Yamato, the flag ship of the Japanese Combined Fleet off the coast of Kyushu Island. So, the government built the memorial tower on Tokunoshima Island. I know their excuse. They would say, "Yamato sank off the coast of this island for sure." They are eager to let the people think that Yamato sank near Okinawa Island.

For all the facts, many Japanese still give misleading information. The memorial tower still stands on Tokunoshima Island as a tourist destination. Far from it, the town in Tokunoshima is collecting contributions for the reconstruction of the monument (See Note 6). Once things are determined, it is almost impossible for the government to change policies. Politicians often cry for "reform", but in reality little has been changed since the end of WWII.

Foreigners may say, "Japanese are yes-men. They don't argue once things are determined." But most Japanese don't think so. This ignorance about themselves is the root cause of Japanese problems.

1. A surface of a building can be hotter than another surface by more than 10 degrees C due to the strong sunshine. There can be some thermally expandable deflection. Such minor leaning can be modified during the construction by adjusting the thickness of the surface concrete.

But Japanese websites invariably slander the Korean construction company (See Note 1).

I asked this problem to an architect. He is particularly an expert about machinery design in building.

He replied as follows.

There is no criteria about the leaning limit of a building according to the Japanese building code. But some architectural institute of Japan sets the limit as 1.5/1000. According to this figure, the leaning allowance would be nearly 70 cm.

The building process is similar to making a building replica with wooden blocks. Sometimes the building leans. And each time we adjust the location of the next wooden block. Then we can continue to pile wooden blocks one after another.

Broadly speaking, the building process of skyscrapers is similar to piling wooden blocks.

Not only to keep the building upright but also to keep floors horizontal is important. During the construction, floor leaning is also adjusted.

So, in the construction, the margin of error in the Petronas Twin Towers would be negligible.

In reality, such margin of error or allowance of error is determined in the construction agreement in advance between the owner and the construction company.

But the real problem occurs on the machine equipment such as high speed elevators. But leaning of the tower has nothing to do with the vertical straightness of the elevators if the errors are negligible.
