I was thinking the same thing some of the stuff in the show does seem "chinese". But you would have to watch almost every episode in order to see it.......Inuyasha-the-kid said:

it's Japanese animation, it's based on a Chinese book, as Haivart said. The creator is Akira Toriyami. The names kind of do seem Chinese but it's Japanese animation.

well, dragonball is mostly based on Journey to the west but Dragonball z is just the continuation of it so, it is also slightly based onj the book as it is also based on Dragonball(which might I add would be an amazing if they re-did it)

I agree with you, but It is like a train wreck. You don't want to watch, but you just have to. Mainly to see if they will actually do something in the episode, instead of saying "I was only using a fraction of my power. Now I will go up to 50% of my power. Ha, ha, ha I am so evil. I have no idea why I am doing this because I am such a shallow and hollow character" repeat until credits with lots of grimacing from hero.Duo said:

Yes, many of the names in Dragon Ball were named after food, underwears, and many other kind of stuff.
The theme of the naming in Bulma's family's is underwears, Bulma's children were named Trunks and Bra.
The theme of the naming of Saiyan people is vegetables.
And from judging on what I readed in this thread, the theme of the naming in the Namek people is snail?
And of course, there's Piccolo (the Demon King who was later on revealed to be a split from 'God', whom the originial person was a Namek from the planet Namek), who is a derivation of Pickel. And also Frieza (the guy who gathers many aliens from many planets to use as his assasins) or something like that, who is of course a derivation of freezer.
It's understandable though to think that Dragon Ball might feel like a Chinese story, considering on how Chinese the looks some of the characters outfits are, not to mention also the looks of some of the enviroments, plus the martial arts and its show of force with spiritual energy.
But I guess that's kinda a tribute to the originial Chinese story, and also to some Chinese martial arts movies. Though some people these days when they see stuff like that, they tend to atribute it to Japanese animation rather than the originial martial arts movies.
As for blowing up planet and so on.
Well... Like Darth Vader said it, don't underestimate the Force in comparison to the Death Star. The power of that technological terror is nothing in comparison to the power of the Force.
Though yes, in the Dragon Ball Z and so on, the story becomes more and more just a show of force story. During the production of the Dragon Ball comic book series, I think that Toriyama Akira was probably pressured to make more and more Dragon Ball story (or at least put his name in the comic book series) when he probably just wanted to rest. So that's probably why story keep going on in a loop, no more fresh materials.
It's interesting though, in the middle of the story (years later after the whole gang finished off Cell), the main role was given to the now teenage Gohan, but later on then they bring back Goku again (eventhough he's a deadman) as the main character, even go so far as him using everyone's power to wipe out Buu (who later reincarnated as a nice young boy named Ubu).
Even GT who should probably have Goten as the star, considering his name fits the initial GT (G.T. = GoTen), he's the same generation as Trunks (who caused mischief together with Goten when they were young) and Pan, and even has the same hairstyle as Goku (they mentioned that they later on have forcefully changed his hairstyle to make him different from his father), the star role was instead given to the now young again Goku. It doesn't matter though, considering since that Goku, Gohan, and Goten were all voiced by the same voice actress.
Anyway. I think that there's a sort of Dragonball-ish comic book series that later on was made into a T.V. series, it was named Yaiba or something like that (I don't know the full Japanese title). It's also an comical adventure story like the originial Dragonball story.
The comic book series of Yaiba I think were done by the same people who done Meitantei Conan (Famous Detective Conan), both stories sure shared many similiar character designs.
The main character is Yaiba, who is a little young boy, along in his quest he befriended with a taller older girl (I forgot her name). It's kinda like between Goku and Bulma, only that Yaiba isn't as innocent as young Goku, plus Yaiba chased after girls like Oolong!
(I think that this little young boy and taller older girl concept was later on used again in Meitantei Conan in the from of Conan and Ran)
They along with a group of friends and allies who were quite 'unique' are on a search for seven dragon or what ever balls. But I think that the story limit the searching only inside Japan, and it's modern Japan and not somesort of mythical strange land. Though like in many fictional stories, the story writers did deformed Japan a little bit.
The balls are quite unique, in that, each ball has an unique elemental power. If a ball is inserted into a slot on Yaiba's sword, his sword is capable unleashing that ball's elemental power. Using the elemental power of one of the balls, Yaiba is even capable of using his sword to fiy (imagine holding to a rocket stick and then using it to fly).
And no, the balls don't breed when they reached their ultimate experience points, at least so far I remember.
As for "Nansou Satomi Hakkenden".
Hmmm... Interesting, I once watched an anime named "Shin Hakkenden" ("New Eight Sword Legend"?). Where the main character is a sword using bou named "Yagami Kou" ("Eight God Light"?), who looks like the Hikaru type character from many of CLAMP stories. Kou along with other seven characters from other seven planets (moons?) is on a certain quest.
I don't watch too much of it though, too Gundam-ish (confused boy at odds with his father, deaths and despair, etc) for my taste.

I don't watch the anime, but technically, some of the characters at least to my knowledge are based around Chinese ledgend.....
