Seems to be some semetic religious base, with Adam and Lilith, but traces of christianity too with the angels being named after christian Apostles (i think, thats the japanese translation of the wrod used in the manga for the 'angels', its kinda hard)

Japanese religion is based opon Shinto and Buddism.

Christianity seems to have been a very popular theme in a lot of 90's anime. (Angel Sanctuary for instance) the whole thing really is very interesting isn't it? Personally, i'd like to see more of Japanese religion in their anime, it's all very intriguing.
