What are your favorite Japanese movies?

Wow, that's thrilling! I wonder how the American version would compare to the original... :?

I saw a cd titled Ju-on 3 being sold. Is there such because I've never heard of it?

Also if you do locate the house, would it be too much to ask you to email me some of 'em? I love Ju-on too...

Arigato!

Well, I've gotten into the "Tomie" series of late. I know it's not exactly the last word in terror compared to say "Ringu" or "Ju-on", but they appeal to me on a quirky kind of level!

I just saw the Evangelion movie (not having watched the series), and I thought that it was great. I love endings that are sad.

Oh, and flashjeff, I love ringu. Best horror series ever man.

Well, except for Audition. Now THAT was scary as hell. Or weird as hell, whichever you prefer....

Yeah, not many movies can honestly chill me to the bone, but "Ringu" filled the bill, and then some! Watching Sadako crawl out of the TV screen at the end was incredibly creepy! BRRRRRRRRR!!

actually I found you can get DVDs here
http://www.battleroyaledvd.com

Please don't go to that site. They are all bootlegs.

The top pic that I saw for BRII was from a boot that I bid on eBay. I was new to eBay and didn't know that more illegal than legal goods filter through that site.

The BR disc I think 3rd one down with the tan cover is a bootleg of the SE 2 disc's Korean version.

If you buy the bootlegs, you will be stuck with DVD-5 meaning compressed video. You can't choose some options available with legit releases such as subtitle options or sound options.

Here is a link to the legit versions I own. They are a few bucks more, but worth it, IMHO.

For the original Battle Royale :

While the subtitles in the new scenes they added leave much to be desired, you can still see what is said. Honestly, I don't think they really add that much to the film, so all I care about it the regular scenes where the subs are top-notch. I wish that they used a different font as the Korean subs are crisp and clear, but the English seem a bit blocky. It is a Korean dish but somehow managed not to be region coded. This will play in any DVD player. 2nd disc is not subbed at all in the special features like the Tartan UK PAL, and NTSC versions are, but overall, I think the first disc is what most folks will go for, and it has one of the best transfers I've seen. And it is DTS.

This is the Chinese version of BRII. Everything from the picture to the subtitles is excellent. It is also a legit release, not like those on Battleroyaledvd.com. It is a 2 disc set that has subs for the special features and the film on the first disc. It's encoded in DTS as well, which is nice. This is a region 3 disc, so you need a Pro Action Replay to run it on a PS2 or a region free DVD player.

Hope it helps.

i like japanese movies, you really have to search better movies.

my favorites; ringu, audition, tabu, battle royale, dark water, blue light ( anyone? ), hm... i can't remember all.
i also like many korean films, like hypnosis, phone, resurrection of a little match girl, etc. and also one chinese movie; naked weapon, it's MUST to watch, i like it very much.

Has anyone seen "Unagi" (eel)?

It was the 1997 Cannes Film Festival winner

http://www.filmfestivals.com/cannes97/cfilmd25.htm

Unagi was a very nice movie. Koji Yakusho really is my favorite japanese actor. one second he's an introverted shy man, next he's a raging demon lol. Saw Doppelganger yesterday, which only emphasizes this.
Also saw Kitano's Sonatine yesterday, maybe not as good as Hana Bi but still a great movie...

Sexy + Innocent = Yamaguchi Momoe :haihai:

I like most of her movies with Tomokazu Miwura:

1. White Love
2. Izu no odoriko
3. Tenshi O Yuwaku
4. Zakjyou

I love alot of the Japanese horror films like Ju-On.
I loved the Japanese "The Ring".
I still think they ruined it when it was done here.
Also, they are making a "american version" of Ju-On.
Even if they have the director of Ju-On helping, it won't be good I just know it.
Sarah Michelle Geller in it=God help us all.

Personally, I don't think the Japanese make good movies. They are very good on making anime (on TV and movies), video games and their TV dramas
are quite good. But movies? The first time I spent money on a Japanese movie
was last year and I've been living here for a long time.

The movie was "Zatoichi", a Kitano Takeshi film. It was interesting but.....

blood,blood,blood. Lots of it.

Never seen the Ju-On movies?
They are scary. They are made very well. They make american horror films look like baby tapes.

Yeah, I can't say much for American horror films. They always have to have teenagers that die, girls that run slow and trip on nothing, have horrible dialogue, and even if they are scary, some large, glaring flaw ruins the film. I've given up on American horror. The only exception is Jonathon Demme's 'The Silence of the Lambs'. Even though movies that are based on books usually suck, this movie is the movie of all movies. I just love the Hannibal Lecter series.

Back to Japanese films, well, Cricket, I wouldn't say that about all Japanese films. Maybe you can rent a few DVD's for some nights, and then have your opinion changed. I know that we all can recommend something for you to watch.

I really like Battle Royale but not 2

Bio Zombie was pretty cool for a low budget movie and the 2 main characters i found really funny.

I have yet to Ring and Ring 0

:? hmm?? for a good japanese movie thats not animated i would have to say " suicide club" its very sick and cute at the same time lol. allot of blood splurring hehhe but a good movie

Oh, I also enjoyed 2LDK. To me, it displayed a very dark side of the human psyche that is usually very hidden from view when it concerns Japanese people. These two girls were just violently brutal to eachother and I couldn't help but watch as they tried to kill eachother!

I hadn't been that shocked since I saw Battle Royale.

Wow.

Onibaba, weird but interesting nonetheless.

I really like Onmyouji. That is one awesome movie. I suggest it to all.

Oh, I also just saw Deadly Outlaw Rekka. Doesn't come out for a few more days here in the states, but whew, very fun movie. Takeuchi Riki is the MAN as usual.

I don't know why, but Yakuza flicks always put me in a good mood.

hmm.. I think it'll be "When the Last Sword is Drawn" It's about a man who joins the shinsen gumi to get money for his family and some more stuff, It's really good

I like som popular Japanese Films my favs. are:

- Ringu Series ( ringu, ringu 2, ringu 0)
- Dark Water
- Returner
- The Eye 1 and 2

Those are the only ones I've seen

Beat Takeshi, I like also. Kikujiro, soo cute but different as well.
Hanabi, I really liked but Zatoichi, I did not enjoy as much.

I really like the Happiness of the Katakuri's, Takashi Miike. (I just forgot his name... eeecck, hope this is right, Audition was good as well, and recently saw One Missed Call. Which I was desparately trying to work out!!

But to be honest getting sick of the teenage movies. But want to see Jun-On, and am hoping that some others recommended here are at my video store.
