What are your favorite Japanese movies?

Hi ya Porl.

So,you must be a big fan of EVIL DEAD TRILOGY.
Evil Dead was the first film I saw.
I saw it when I was about 4year-old.
My dad likes horror and violent films,and when that film
came out on video in the rental shop,he rent it and said
"hey,you have to see this film cause it's brilliant!! "
When I finished watching it,I was like "Oh!! this is what I wanna do
in my future!!" Since then, my dream has been to become a film
director.
So,as I wrote in the other thread,I'm in Ireland to study about making
films!!
Anyway Porl,I'm sure you know that Evil Dead3(Army of darkness)
has 2 types of ending. Which do you prefer???

Grave of fireflys is quite a sad movie. It has a beautiful story, and it ends morbidly.

SUMMARY:
When their mother is killed in the firebombing of Tokyo near the end of World War II, teenage Seita and his little sister Setsuko are left on their own: their father is away, serving in the Imperial Navy. They both stay with an aunt, but she has little affection for them and resents the time and money they require. The two kids set up housekeeping in a cave by a stream, but their little resources are depleted, and Seita is reduced to stealing to feed his sister. Despite his efforts, she succumbs to malnutrition. Seita painfully makes his way back to the devastated city where he quietly dies in a crowded railway station.

Now that is a good movie. Morbid, but good nonetheless.

Yeah i think the films are amazing!!! soo soo good!!!

ahh..im not sure. I like both the endings..i like the whole beardy "i slept too long!!' ending for it being abit of a downer.. but i also like the witch in the S-Mart one.. i dont really know. ...

Army of Darkness (evil dead 3) is so good though!! I really like Evil Ash! When he tries to shout "tally Fourth!!" to get the skeleton army going into battle and his jaw keeps locking!! hehe ... Ash is the Daddy!!! Without Ash you wouldn't have Duke Nukem I dont think! or you would, but he wouldn't have all the cool bad-*** quotes!

Im glad to meet another Evil Dead fan!

I like Akira Kurusawa's "Dreams"

I also am a fan of martial arts movies and anime. I watched Seisohen (is this the right spelling?) and I cried... The latest anime I was able to watch was Great Teacher Onizuka i like it, super duper funny...

I love "19" and "Dark Water" the most, I think ..
But Battle Royal is awesome, too.
It's not that easy to get japanese movies with subtitles -,-

Of all Miyazaki films, "Grave of the Fireflies" is definately one of his best! The anime is soo deep, touching, sad and powerful. The film left a lump in my throat because it is soo sad, but also very realistic depicting the lives of ordinary Japanese during the war struggling for food in the last stages of the war. It is a piece of social history, and what I what I also like about the film is that we don't get to see the actual battles of the war, as we only follow the two kids and the people around them.

I've yet to see Grave of the Fireflies, but it sounds like a great movie. A buddy of mine has recommended it to me several times, but I've neglected to go rent it. Some other movies that I like are Versus, Battle Royale (the first one), and The Audition.

The original Godzilla has always been one of my faves. I read somewhere that it's supposed to return to theaters as 2004 is the 50th anniversary of its original release. I think it'll be shown uncut, in Japanese (with subtitles I believe) and, more importantly, WITHOUT Raymond Burr getting in the way! Should be way cool!!

BLACK TIGHT KILLERS is an all time favorite movie of mine, period! I cannot recomend it enough.

Netflix is a great source for anyone in the US who doesn't have access to good Japanese movies locally.

I see very few people mention Kyoshi Kurosawa. His movies sometimes are truly amazing such as his "horrors" Cure, Pulse, Bright Future, Sﾃｩance...

Other personal favorites are: Visitor Q, Audition, Kamikaze Taxi, Electric Dragon 80000 volts, Ring trilogy, Hana Bi, Zatoichi, Grave of the fireflies, Angel's Egg, Spirited away...

Definite number one: Eureka by Shinyi Aoyama

Worst movie: Battle Royale 2! as a japanese person aptly put: it makes me ashamed to be japanese...

which Ju-on 2 did you get? the 2 dvd TV Series version.. or the Ju-on 2 movie?.. i have both. they are dead good! I've only managed to watch the first half of Ju-on 2 the movie. I was watching it at 2am in the dark with my headphones on and got too scared!!! hahaha

film which I couldn't forget would be Akira Kurosawa's Dreams...Our school made us watch it way back 1991. I heard that Kyoshi is also a good film maker. Alas, I haven't the time yet to see one of his films though I am a huge fan of horror movies... Sad to say it's really hard to find Asian films in my city...

yeah they can be hard to find, no doubt about that. still though, kyoshi's movies do sometimes participate at festivals such at Cannes or at least get shown on indie film festivals...so they do get spread moreso than other equally good japanese directors like Sogo Ishii for instance...

so i don't know, don't give up hope yet

Sogo Ishii? Hmmm...never heard but I'll try to find out..

Well, hope isn't dead for me... I know I'll find 'em good Asian films sooooon... Well, sometimes in my city some cinemas would feature Asian films but most of them are horror. I do like horror but I would also like to watch Asian fantasy films and Asian experimental films...

Well Ishii is definitely experimental I'm also a bit more partial to the experimental genre, they're just so damn hard to find. Movies like Eureka, Charisma, Kamikaze Taxi...I wonder if it's a coincedence they all star Koji Yakusho

same goes for horror i guess, not too crazy about hack n slash fests, much rather see something unsettling like Pulse or Dark Water or The Eye (though it's not japanese).

What do you mean specifically with fantasy films? you mean like Moon child or so? or just anime? :?

I'll definitely look Ishii up thanks... as for fantasy films, well not just anime... The Eye was good. Dark Water was even more. I felt pity for the little girl who got left behind...

My current favourite are the Ju-on films, which is cheating - but each film adds to the whole Ju-on mythos, they refer to each other and are all set in the same house. Even the new American version will be set in the same Japanese house! Can't wait to see that this Halloween when it opens.

I've heard the actual house in the Ju-on films is in a suburb of Tokyo - has anyone found it? I'm coming to Japan soon and would love to take a photo of it!
