I would reccomend Neon Genesis Evangelion, that show is the best! Thats if you like drame and stuff. I also would reccomend Hellsing, if you like booldy/horror type pf shows.

Akira and Ghost from the Shell are older but they're good too

I agree with the Samurai Champloo, been watching it recently. Good stuff! But, I really don't understand why nobody has mentioned 'Berserk'. Easily one of the most emotional animes ever!

Spirited Away is good. I would recommend ALL of the Studio Ghibli animes!!!
They are all good except one, which I didn't get: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind...weird..

My faves are many, I especially also adore "Whisper of the Heart", which is a sweet anime by Ghibli.

The anime/manga series that I would mention to you are: CHOBITS, FUSHIGI YUUGI, AKIRA, INUYASHA, KENSHIN, and TENCHI MUYO!!(they're my favorites)

omg!!!vampire hunter D:blood lust,has the best theme song....tookumade!!!!!!i cant get it out of my head.....now back on topic....i think a great intro to anime would be rurouni kenshin....its sooo good,(i also liked hunterXhunter,i think that would be fantasy)

Although NGE is good, it might be too heavy for somebody starting out on anime . maybe Zenki

Old-Skool:

Project A-Ko (some of the best action scenes EVER)
Akira (set aside a weekend to watch it about 3 or 4 times, though)
Lensman (if you can find it, it's out of print now)
Otaku No Video (it's like "Trekkies" for anime!)

Nu-Skool:

Chobits (guy finds an android with no operating system in an alley but it works. And it likes him.)
Midori Days (guy wakes up - his right hand has turned into a girl.)
Airmaster (Like DBZ, except the fights are actually OVER at the end of the episode.)
Dead Leaves (Psychotic. That's all I can say.)

Uhhﾂ…I guess you can roll an 8-sided die or something to pick one.

I have just read the manga for this. How close is the anime to the manga? Keep looking at the DVDs for it, but haven't bought any yet. Currently buying the Ghost in the Shell: Stand alone complex, as it is released. Also just got the Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 from the states.

It is probably my age, but I find Dragonball immensly tedious. 'Stop talking, just hit him'. My god, they have all these powers, but in the time they have finally powered up to their absolute max level (which seems to take about 10 episodes to do) I would have just shot him/it/her with your standard big gun a la Batou style

As for movies, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a good starting point, although it was really made by an american studio if I recall correctly. And of course Ghost In The Shell and Akira.

When it comes to series, Great Teacher Onizuka is greatly recommended as a first anime. It has comedy, action, drama, mystery and is downright entertaining. After that perhaps Cowboy BeBop, Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, Beck. I would recommend going with a 13 episode or 26 episode series first before watching some of the 50+ or even still ongoing ones to assess how much you really like anime. I can imagine the longer ones to be quite overpowering and boring if you are not really into anime.

Well, to be honestly, I wasn't into anime untill a few years ago.
I couldn't understand how some friends of my current age of 20 could watch "cartoons", yes CARTOONS, I feel so embarrased that I once tought of anime like this!

But when Winamp came with a new version that included internet TV streaming, there was this serie "Love Hina" being broadcasted on it, just to test it I watched about half an hour, I was lucky that the first episode started...

I went like, hmmz, intresting story, oh the 2nd episode comes right after it? Okay, let's continue to watch...
before I knew I was watching it all day ^^
I found Love Hina to be such a great serie, and what? there is more? is THIS the famous anime everybody talks about?
Some time later I started with fruits baskets, cowboy bebop, elfenlied, and so many more...

I'm HOOKED by now!
