haha, sorry i didn't mean to sound xenophobic, i recently saw a documentary about this issue in belgium when it comes to french speaking flemish and dutch speaking walloons and people from brussels.
i think because my french is a disaster it freaks me out when i'm in brussels and i can't communicate with people unless they speak english. =/

my girlfriend's mum is japanese but moved here when she married a belgian. it's amazing she left 'almost' everything behind and adjusted here in belgium, i know dutch is not one of the most easy languages either and i even started learning japanese because i wish to go there. i think it's cool to speak someone else's language, it shows a lot of respect when you try..i wish i felt the same way about french (it was one of those nightmare classes in school for me) because i really don't like the language so i'm a bit of the narrow minded *** not trying harder to speak french

kanji are nuuuuts ! but it's fun when you're starting to really take them in and being able to read labels at supermarkets etc..just random but so rewarding.

I'm a language student, which has me speakng five languages.

Although out of these.
Only the flemish [the home tongue] and oddly enough english are my two languages which I have perfectly mastered.

English though, is my 4th language, and not a Country language.

Belgians have german, flemish[dutch], wallonian[french] as official languages.
English is a commonplace fourth, and spanish is a very optional 5th for language students.

We get french from early age though, which makes it embarassing enough to say I'm not good enough to confidently use my french.

In writing.

I can perfectly speak languages due to the fact I can mold my voice to any tone, but writing is a nightmare at times.

The problem seems to be that due to my english evolving quicker then french, and the flemish inbred anti french attitude work against my french. It's odd to explain but it is like due to my knowledge of english and dutch, I wantto use the logic behind those two languages to use on french.

Which doesn't work.

You specify Cantonese (considered by some linguists to be a dialect, by others to be a language) but then you also mentioned Chinese. Do you mean Mandarin?

Yup, Mandarin. Cantonese and Mandarin are similar but there's still differences. From where I am, we identify Chinese as Mandarin while Cantonese as Cantonese. In school, we are forbid to speak Cantonese and any other languages except Malay, English, and Chinese.

Most of us didn't care anyway, so you may hear all the dialects above +Hainan, Teoh Cheoh, some minor Japanese and Korean during recess times, especially when we're biting each others' heads off.

I am attempting to learn Japanese which has been a good experience so far! I can read/write Hiragana, practising Katakana and still need to start with Kanji (which would be hard i guess).

O, yeh and i can also speak English very well.

English here, I also was fluent in Filipino (Tagalog) when I was a young child, but after moving back to England (and later Wales) I forgot it all!

Hope to someday be fluent in Japanese (obviously!), Mandarin, French, Russian, Spanish, Italian and German. Ambitious I know, but ambition is my middle name!
