What is your mother tongue ?

My mother tongue is supposedly Mandarin, but most unfortunately, I am only moderately proficient in it...XD

My mother tounge is Pilipino but I can speak and undestand English. Im not very good at it but I dont have any difficulties in undestanding this English languange. It would be hard to undestand English of others because thay have different dictions.

Well, that's a great idea... I voted turkish (and I'm the fourth, so I'd like to know who were the three others) because it is my mother tongue. Now I can speak fluently French (je parle trﾃｨs bien le franﾃｧais, vu que c'est ma langue "d'ﾃｩtude"), English (don't I ?!) and Dutch (ja t'is waar, ik spreek ook Nederlands) also. Next year I'll begin studying Japanese.

My mother tongue is Cantonese but I moved to Canada since 7. Surprisingly I can read Chinese newspapers perfectly because I used to sing Chinese Karaoke when I was in HK......that's where I learnt all my Chinese. I am also fluent in English......know a little French.

I hope I can master Japanese as my third fluent language. Gotta start singing Japanese Karaoke !!

Hmm.. when you say "native" language the first thing that pops into my head is the language you think in. In my case that would have to be English but I do think in Arabic sometimes (I'm losing it though).

Although Spanish is coming right next to Arabic right now.

heh, i think in japanses... but i can barely speek a word of it ^^;
my laguage skills are limited to say the least... i mean, i manages A's in english... but only cos i know how to give examners what they want... (i hadn't even read the book the exam was on!)
i stank with french, but had no passion for it...
japanese i'm strugglein to teach myself with... having one person to check up against, and even the i don't know if she's right.
i know a little cntonese (tho i refuse to speek it to anoyone other than the one who taught it me, and people who don;t know it, as last time i said something to a friend from HK, he looked at me like i was from another plannet ^^; *ie, pap prenounciation*)

Naturally, there is no need to have exceptional literary abilities when I say "speak a language at native level". Being able to express yourself fluently, read books, watch TV, etc. in that language without difficulty and without thinking or translating from another language is enough.

First, I indicated only Dutch, my mother tongue. But when I read this definition I added English and French as well. My French or English isn't perfect, but I think I can express myself pretty fluently in them, and read books or watch TV in them without difficulty. I also speak a little Italian, German and a very little Japanese

So technically Mandarin is my first language, but I moved to the US when I was two, so I "know" English millions of times better than Mandarin. I speak Mandarin well enough, but I can barely read and I canNOT write. =_=

in malaysia our national tongue is bahasa malaysia. which is something like indonesian language. but my mother tongue is english. i can also speak chinese.
in bahasa malaysia, "saya nak pergi ke tandas" translates as i want to go to the toilet
