What are your favorite Japanese movies?

Well my favourites are probably Ichi the Killer, Sonatine and Ring.
Also, both Tetsuo movies are from 1991, so not that old. I'd recommend Bodyhammer (the second one). When I first saw it, it was breathtaking

From Kurosawa: Ikiru, Stray Dog, most of the samurai epics

From Imamura: Ballad of Narayama, Unagi, Vengeance is Mine

From Itami: Tampopo, Minbo woman, Taxing Woman

That's what immediately comes to mind ...

[EDIT] Also, the guy who directed Maboroshi and After Life. Those were real nice.

This may sound childish, but I loved the storyline of Spirited Away! It was so unique,..........and the art totally blew me away!!!! I don't think I've seen so much beauty in one movie, and if I had imagined any characters from that movie, they would look exactly like Miyazaki had made them. I have nothing but good things to say about it. Truly astounding.

My vote's for Millennium Actress. An excellent film with a strong and gripping story that just pulls you in.

Favorite Japanese Movies? (Not Anime)

Here's my favorites, from top to bottom.

1.) The Seven Samurai
2.) Chushingura
3.) Onmyoji
4.) RAN
5.) Ringu

The first four are pretty much classics in my book, nothing else I've seen has come close. Ringu is pretty recent, at least compared to the others, but it's interesting and unique (and of course, scary). I've also seen the American version 'The Ring', which is very spiced up compared to the movie it originated from, but I still prefer the Ringu.

I still wish they made old-style, 4 hour long Japanese movies like they used to..All these new special effects and explosions in movies only entertain me for so long..Where's the content? The depth?

What do you think?

You speak for both of us, thats my list too.

I have a trailer for battle royale, looks pretty damn sweet. Can you buy it in the USA or is it still banned?

looks like it, imdb.com says you can get it in the US but then when you click it says it hasnt been released yet, so...
but you can prolly download it. though i havent seen the 1st one anywhere in awhile.

Actually, I found you can get DVDs here
