The Bummer and Rant Thread

Had to set a date with death today .

Our oldest cat Sundance has been going down hill for the past few months and this weekend has started to lose control of her bladder; a sure sign the end is near. I have to take her Monday afternoon to be put to sleep. Funny how in my job , I deal with human death often, but the death of an animal affects me with so much hurt and pain.

I too can feel and understand that pain and hurt, and to that extent, in that way, am right there with you...sharing in the moment of memories and experiences between the two of you in your life.

Also, I would be right there in helping bring out the positive and beauty of the life experienced, and being experienced, the awe and wonder at the dance that thus goes on, and, in turn, lure that hurt and pain to evolve into satisfaction and happiness--you two are!

Oh, I really do feel the pain, too... Considering how much the two of you loved the cat and lived together for such a long time... I've had my share of sad partings, too... :(

I, too, wish that you know that Sundance most certainly had a very happy life with you and must be very happy to be able to be with the both of you until Nature comes to take it away to cat-heaven.

I can't talk about everything, but in the past several days, I have gotten some of the worst news I can think of.

One is my father, who is getting up in years and has been diagnosed with stomach cancer.

The other I can't talk about, but......

Rarely in my life have I ever felt this down. If I wasn't in such shock, I'd feel like crying for certain.

Why is it that just when everything seems to be turning out alright that everything turns sour? I suppose that's what is meant by the concept "life is pain."

Sorry to hear that MO.

My family always had a saying "bad things come in threes". Seems like life often dumps a whole dump truck of grief on you at once. Hope things get better for you soon guy.

I just found a kitten the other day on the side of the road. I was going to give it a good home. I took it to the vet, it had leukemia. I had to have it put to sleep.

It was a cute little black cat, too.

Also, I feel fat and lazy during the summer break. Like an American. Nothing to do about it but work, read books, and browse the internet. Boring. I wish I would've taken summer classes.

I am kind of afraid that I can't say that much, Mikawa san, that would be able to relieve whatever degree of emotional load has been placed upon you, but if it were any condolence at all, I'd say that there has to be a positive somewhere in it all--even if we can't see it now, it's surely there. I pray that you find it soon !

I'm sorry to hear that, ATW (if I may). Yeah, I understand the no-summer-classes-taken, summer time blues. Please try to get in a little exercise, as much as you can.

Oftentimes much more than a human death. I feel your pain Frank, but the happy memories and reminiscing will always be there. After a while you'll enjoy talking about Sundance and the joy she brought you.

Life was never meant to be a happy experience. Happiness is that second or two in the grand scheme of things that make us believe we have a purpose and prevents us from taking our own life before our "job" is completed.

I prefer to look on the brighter side: When things look the bleakest, I've learned throughout my years that, when "God" closes one door, He opens another. The key is in identifying that door.

I also believe that there are no coincidences and that everything happens for a reason that we may not yet understand. But after looking back on it in months and years to come, a light will go off in our head that says "Aha! That was the reason I experienced that! Naruhodoo!" Good luck to you!

Excercise would be good. Also, I am making a bit of money working over summer break. ^^ Thanks for your concern, made me feel a bit better.

For the past two weeks, I had been on jury duty for the very first time and it had been a most fascinating experience, being part of an actual trial instead of merely watching it on Law & Order.

As for the trial itself, the defendant had been charged with chasing after and shooting at a SV who's occupants had shot out the windows on his grandmother's van, the "course" the two vehicles took brought them to within a mile of my house. Well, after a week of testimony from the prosecution and the defense, the jury spent the second week in deliberation, and here's where the bummer part of the equation comes in as we wound up being hung as we couldn't arrive at a consensus on any of the three charges against the guy: illegal possession of a firearm, simple assault or reckless endangerment.

Two weeks of my life spent in that trial and no verdict. That annoyed and frustrated me no end. As for the defendant, he'll eventually be retried----for the THIRD time! Ahh, my tax dollars at work! Urgh!

Being a juror is one of the toughest "jobs"....but every person convicted of crime has a right to a trial by a jury of their peers. So you were doing your civic duty! Hooray! I hope I never get picked! :)

Anyway, I felt a pain in my right upper thigh when riding, nothing much. Well now I have a leg that is swollen twice it's size. I can't even get my jeans over my thigh. I went to the emergency room and had some tests and sure enough I have ripped part of an abductor muscle. I go for a more detailed test Monday. I am so bummed. Here I am getting a new horse and now I can't ride. I may be off riding for a few months...if I need surgery a few months longer! argh! I am hoping it is just a small tear that will recover on it's own...the Dr. said I could ride at that point it would just take longer to fully heal.

I'm sorry to hear that Goldie chan. I hope you heal up faster than usual.

Now, I recall you had bought one exercise program kit and stuff. Did you ever use it? I mean I know that horseback riding can possibly cause injury anyway, but being in shape helps a fair bit. Have you been doing those exercises after you had read over the material?

WOW, that is a bummer Goldie !

Maybe if the worst does happen and you can't ride for a while, you could use the horse for a therapy horse? Or. if you have someone you can trust , to rent her a bit. Things will work out, they do for good people.

Yep, I had been doing pilates and I also have a membership at the YMCA. I go 3-5 times a week and do core strengthening, cardio, and recently weight lifting. Not to get big muscles, just to get some upper body strength. I had hoped to balance out my weak arms to my strong legs! :)

I really can't believe I am this injured. It hit me last night and I cried. I feel "broken". I want to be whole. Then I realized that horses and riding are a part of who I am. I lost that part of me once in a terrible divorce and now I just had it in my grasp for such a short precious time and it's been taken away, not permanently, but it just feels so unfair. And yet it is my body that broke, no one did this to me. It is simply and accident. But I feel so crushed.

My nieces will adoringly brush Lexi until she sparkles and well, probably put sparkles in her hair! :) I know that part will work out. Maybe it's selfishness, but I wanted my new horse for just me for a while. Pathetic right....

It's not a good new but since I arrived at my grandma's home, she ain't stop to say that Japan isn't a great country, it's really boring to hear japanese talking and japanese songs are really bad and they sing bad. I'm really sick of her, even if I'm really happy to be in Quebec City, I think I'll go back to my little town because of that...

I can understand the emotional circling of the mind in such circumstances, Goldie chan. I am very glad to hear that you had actually be doing the workouts and building strength. I guess there was just a weak spot.

I do hope you heal up...sooner than usual, so that you can get back in the saddle, and maybe take easy rides for a while.

Yan, I hope you can get out that situation--since it sounds like your grandmother has a overly negative opinion of Japan.

I don't think she has a negative opinion of Japan but it seems that she doesn't like Japan and I think that she can't understand why people can like what she don't.

Sometimes I wish I were less polite.

My aunt and uncle were trying to give me advice on how to find a job in Japan. However, it was so painfully generic that it wasn't funny. I unfortunately had my laptop with me, so they told me to do some google searches that I knew would lead to nothing. Unfortunately, I am somewhat polite so I didn't just walk away. They also told me to go to this job fair at the UW and ask these employers I've never heard of if they had offices in Japan. So I went through the motions. And my uncle even had the gall to say "So, you want to work in China... that general area"... Oh man, I very nearly lost it at that point. Not only were they giving me ridiculously generic advice, ignoring any cultural sensitivities and special considerations needed for working in Japan (seriously, you could have replaced "Japan" with any other country's name when it came to the advice they were giving me), but they also grouped all Asians in the same group like too many people do. To add insult to injury, they forgot about my birthday.

I know this may sound like I have severe anger management problems, but I am glad to get this off my chest.

I came home today and found out that our oldest cat, Silas, died today. :(
Sounds like a series of strokes. He was 19, so not a bad age for a cat.

Sorry to hear that.

It sounds like you must have given him a good life to live as long as he did. When one of our cats passes, we wait a week or so and go get a new kitten from the shelter. A kitten brings a lot of joy and laughs into the house, but you need to give them a lot of attention the first few months. My condolences old friend.

First, my sincere condolences to Myrcenius on the loss of Silas. We know how difficult it can be to lose a four-legged member of the family.

When we lost Hemingway in May 2007, we just couldn't bring ourselves to go look for another cat, even though the house seemed terribly empty without at least one cat. I suppose I could have gone sooner, but Ron just couldn't do it. Maybe it worked out for the best, because in December 2007 we brought Gracie home, and she is a wonderful cat.

In Flickr I come into at least brief contact with many people who have cats. When I encounter somebody whose cat has just died, has disappeared, or who is even sick, it usually brings back vivid memories of Hemingway's last trip to the veterinarian, and I get choked up. I try to say what I can in sympathy, but it is often quite difficult for me.

Kinsao...whatever is wrong with Mikawa, I hope it isn't serious.

I like a good rant as much as the next person, but my rant is about someone who rants far too much! There are three of us in our office, my boss, my equal colleague and me. My colleague suffers very badly with stress. So do I, to the point of needing counselling, but I can't see what's so stressful here really.

Before and at the beginning of each semester it is pretty busy here, and it can get a bit stressful when we are busy with complicated problems and people are constantly interrupting with inane queries. I have been known to have the odd outburst. But I feel like he's constantly on the lookout for something to whinge about.

From the moment he enters the office, almost every word out of his mouth is negative. It's bad enough when he moans about people just between us, but he's rude on the phone as well. He makes this sighing noise and instead of just dealing with queries he always interrogates people.

Our boss has noticed it too, but she finds it very difficult to speak to him. He's old enough to be our father, which I think makes it harder, plus I think she's afraid he'll go off sick.

It's got to the point where I'll only speak to him when it's absolutely unavoidable, and when he starts ranting I don't reply. I'm afraid he's damaging the reputation of our office.

What makes it worse is that we have very good working conditions, with very little to complain about. The pay is crap, but our boss is great, most of the people we work with are ok, our office has the best view on campus, we can walk in and out of the office when we like (within reason), and we all manage our own workloads.

I've already snapped at him once this week and had to fight back tears. I guess I'll have to tell my boss that I can't bear it much longer. I've been avoiding it because I know she finds that kind of thing tough, and I don't want to put her in that position. But then I guess that is part of her job...

Tsuyoiko, you should definitely talk to your boss about this; it isn't fair on you, her, or anyone else in the workplace! ☝ It does sound like your boss is broadly sympathetic, though; just a little shy/nervous maybe about approaching this older guy... especially as he has such a bad temper! You could sit down somewhere quiet and have a one-to-one chat with your boss and maybe you can agree together the best way to approach him... I'm sure she'd be sympathetic to your concerns and it would be helpful to her to have someone to discuss it with rather than trying to figure out a way forward by herself.

It's bad enough when it is one grumpy person getting the whole of the office down constantly, but when it comes to dealing with customers or external people on the phone and suchlike, it really is bad, because it gives the whole company a bad reputation/image... she really needs to take it up with him if only for that reason!

My little rant is also work-related: I have to get up at 4.30am tomorrow to attend an event in the south. >_< I wouldn't normally post about it but feel obliged to add my rantette while I'm here! ;-)

I have had to work on homework for 10 hours both yesterday and today, no exaggeration. I also have three midterms to look forward to in the next week.

And I still haven't tied down a job or gotten any further in applying for an English teaching job...

And the holiday season is coming up. I hate the holiday season.

I'm sick as hell of the US presidential campaign. It seems like it's been going on forever.

I'm sick of the economy being in a slump, too. Sick of losing thousands of dollars a day just because I didn't know the right time to sell, and at the same time not wanting to sell because I'd be taking a loss, and stocks will rebound someday. Not soon, but years from now.

I'm sick of having almost no work experience.

I'm sick of the catch-22 of not being able to get a job without experience, and not being able to get experience without a job.

On top of that, my heart hurts. Though I hate life so much right now that I probably wouldn't mind a heart attack.

Ugh. I don't think I've been through a more stressful time in my life.
