double bass..is that those guitars that have two necks?..sometimes i wonder how some people manage to play those

No, double bass is a string instrument that's usually played with a bow (although there are plucking techniques) and looks like a large cello. I believe it has the lowest range of the string family.

You're thinking of a double-neck bass.

When you look at what you think are the guitarrists of a band, check out the guy that plays with the hand above the strings and flicks them with only a few of his fingertips, rather than infront of the strings...

well.. it's not a rule or anything, but it's pretty common that someone playing the bass will have a bit more layed back sort of playing (holding the bass low and stuff) since it usually doesn't have the quick changes that playing the guitarr does

I think a lot of people think of bass guitar as the "easy guitar," so you get a lot of converted guitarists who don't really know how to play a bass guitar. Sure, they know where the notes are and the fingerings, but they don't really know what to do with the instrument. Check out guys like Les Claypool and Victor Wooten to see some people really playing a bass guitar.

Now that I've said all of that, you're generally right, although I'm not so sure about the holding it lower thing. Then again, I haven't watched a band play in a while, but I know some guitarists who like the guitar down by the ankles, and there are lots of bassists who like the bass hugging the nipples.

Like you said, it's all personal preference I personally played the bass high when I tried it for a while, but then I wasn't very comfortable with it at all.

this is how I meant many play a bass. Hand over the strings, flicking the strings:

and these are double basses. Usually played with a string in orchestras and such, but in jazz they'll usually flick the strings:

I use a pick, but I'm trying to get back into fingers... It's so much cooler... And I want to learn slap.
It's not easy guitar! God, you should check Connell (Daedalian) out! Phh he's all over the place *builds shrine* Some of it's slower, but some of it's just plain... Terror. Slow stuff can sound really good(I love playing .45 by Shinedown, it's really slow) too, it's not just speed that counts! I'm pretty much a beginner (been playing since last summer) but I've advanced quite quickly... Stringed insturments seem to be my thing, cause guitar was easy too (Just didn't like it... it's easier to take out anger playing guitar though)
I like my bass low, but it's not everyone's thing.
