New to J-rock, teach me about it in one week

if you are offended in anyway about me typing dutch, then please let me know.. so i can translate it for you

My first jrock band was Dir en Grey....you should try them, they're great! but it did took me like a few days to actually love them...hehehe

i started off wit Vulgur and went down to guaze...hehehe...i see there are lots of changes compared from back then to now but i love the changes...it's unique and it's different!

Hiya Dutch, glad to see you checkin in! :p
I'm attempting to upload some songs for you as I type (cos I can't never resist to evangelise of j-rock, haha!), but... tis a little slow... maybe I'm too ambitious to try and UL too many at once!

Still - I will get some songs up for you eventually! :p

About the 'j-rockers look feminine' thing.... Isayhello explained it well... 😌... but... how to say...?... anyhow, my attempt to clarify (haha!)........ it is interesting the history and link of VK/kabuki ... especially bands like Kagrra, that take influence from traditional Japanese music... but also... it becomes 'just' a style (if I may put it that way). Example: to look beautiful = to market well. (same can of course be seen in Western music, only the choice of style/look is different!)

Also, not all bands that look VK dress like female, when you actually look at their outfit. For 'female' clothing, we think usually of dress or skirt, yes? (although that in itself is a stereotype and depend on current era fashion.) Some j-rockers do clothe in dress or skirt, but others, when you look, it's not so much 'female' clothing as simply unusual or way-out style! Maybe something of bright colours, or many unique trimmings, or unusual cut... but not a clothe that you would say specifically 'female' - just unusual to see. :-)

Honestly, I don't see j-rockers often as looking like girls (except for some of them), because I now became used to see them wearing makeup. As I said in another thread, I see makeup as something that's used by both males and females, as an enhancer of a look, to make the person look more theatrical or more beautiful. After all, this thing for male/female also goes in fashions across eras, too!

ooo sorry, I have talked too much and my language isn't very good today, either (tired) 🙇‍♂️

I will shut up now, and post again when I have done some uploads for you! :p

jpopsuki is nice, but sometimes there are no seeders ☝

I have some gifts for you, Dutch! :-)

B'z - Love Phantom:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=23DKNAPN1UJQ602OOJ1VSPRPZ2
(I defy anyone to listen to this song without getting up and dancing around the room! It is so good for cheering up! 🕺 )

Kozi - Mise Mono Koya:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2YUBL599D67E835BAK1VCFG08E
(This is like classical... It's not totally typical of Kozi's work - he did one album in this style as a collaborative project on a book - but if you like classical music, this may appeal.)

SID - Ajisai:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3N2EI8CDV3YYV04EOBL7OQ8MLB

SID - Aikagi (unplugged version):
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0AEVXW1LDEIFQ3GD0F8XS1G4WO
(This song makes me want to cry, but in a good way!)

SID - Izon no Niwa:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2AGRXITZSMYZ31JUNUN4N0IWHY
(OK, I have no idea if this one will appeal, but... I love it so much... It has a tasty bass line, and is another gentle song.)

L'arc en ciel - Driver's High:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2KB4I0RZRJ65B0OT2AMK6209B2
(Cool song - and a good one to listen to in the car!)

Deadman - Blue Berry:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3QWW2M6RZYFAS2KVA5GSWLVM8O
(Gentle rock - a really nice melody.)

Kagrra, - Saiyuki:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1JXUAJ9VN3HPD0YF8WZPEC4UDD
(I chose this song because it's very 'Kagrra,ish'... lol. They're not the taste of everyone, but they are extremely good so I uploaded for you three songs of theirs of different types.)

Kagrra, - Murakumo:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2OSG5JKEIJG7322HD66BL48T0Q
(This is one of those songs that you either love it or hate it. I love it so much I can't imagine that anyone wouldn't, but... mehhh... maybe somewhere in the world there exists someone who doesn't...! lol. It's a very... I don't know how to say... 'particular' and unique style, and... I'll shut up already.)

Kagrra, - Himitsu:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1IP9AEBH2CGD70OYL9SJ9I016Y
(Ah! Here we have good ol' ROCK! Yum yum... I adore those crisp duelling guitars. I command you to listen!)

Kra - Candy:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3IIHJU09OLJJ717AMDW1TWXC8G
(A bouncy-sounding song with a nice vocal break in the middle... hee hee... )

Glay - Yuuwaku:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1QEYK0VPTNKU62BCNCEYG3NB7O
(I LOVE this popsong!!!)

Glay - Nantou Huu:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2L1U6015RHT4X2ZIK882YUO2FG

Dir en grey - Cage:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3K1BVHF99KPU11WLLU7JNH6KKD
(Dir en grey's music varies so much that it's totally impossible to pick one song that is representative, but I chose this because it's melodic, not heavy, but it has some 'spike' to it... and a lovely bass solo.)

MUCC - Saishuu Ressha:
http://s42.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2R3FQKCSJSEXU2IGJC8KM82ADT
(MUCC is my personal favorite band.... I really want you to like them! I chose this song because... uhh... it's kinda rock... but it's not heavy... it is catchy... it has a lovely riff... and.... just listen to that bass in the second verse! *goes insane*)

MUCC - Mae e:
http://s42.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0UWT12WKKRYIL07D9USA2RHAI9
(I chose this song because it's very MUCC-ish in its variety. One thing I love about MUCC is that you never know what to expect from their songs... you can't hear the intro and immediately judge the song, because they change so much even within one song. And this is a good example of that - it changes key, major and minor, it changes pace and it goes loud to quiet... *shut up Kinsao*)

MUCC - 1R:
http://s42.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2F00LHY8O14KA19BRZQ080N3PU
(This is a gentle song from MUCC... please listen even if you didn't enjoy the others! I never stop being amazed at the quality of Tatsurou's voice. Listen and marvel...)

Psycho le Cemu - Gekiai Merry-go-Round:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=34JDKGKYQ4UII0N1U31Y6116JH
(Very catchy, dancey pop - you'll have to restrain yourself from singing it all day!)

Psycho le Cemu - Prism:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3C090VJZYO8BG2J5NEM4KIL9Q7

Merry - Bluesy Night:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2FEBFZW0UE8Y12P5OZDVZKGV0F
(Blues-rock - ya can't beat it!)

Schwarz Stein - Corroded Cage:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3FZYUAEY9LQ672Q8YFGDM4PBUG
(I have no idea if you'll like Schwarz Stein... if you like dance music, you might... they're kind of... dark dance... maybe techno-goth? *is bad at music categories*)

Schwarz Stein - Creeper:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2YN8GBY75XN7R0QEXOJ3PRFDXB

Well, you say you're familiar with Gackt's music already, but just in case you don't have these, I'll throw in Farewell:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2Y39EE7CIKTC62HUUE7CUA5BMY
... and Ash:
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2VVFJBTMVG0M2141XD561EU3UJ

there - I hope I haven't confused you too much! Please let us know which ones you like! :p

WOW.. want to give you Rep for this, but already did before hahaha...

Dir en grey-Sometimes it suprises me how a small man like Kyo can sing so good and make such noises 😌 The band is awesome really, even tho most of people say the like their old stuff better, because the last album is not so good. Well i like it a lot and it doesn't matter to me what they say!:D

I'm really surprised by Kyo's voice too and I love Dir en grey so much. I have trouble understanding how such a voice could come out of someone like him. His voice gets me like in a trance and I love how deep in can be when he sings more ballad type songs, but I also love how his voice ranges and how he can scream. It's truly incredible as is the band itself. *lol* I remember when I watched their Kingdom 5 Ugly concert, I think was, and was amazed at their abilites. Toshiya, Kyo, Shinya, and Kyo are truly breath taking in their abilities, not to mention they're all really good looking. My faves Toshiya and I can truly say that he has given me a new appreciation for the bass. *lol*

I agree about liking Deg no matter what other ppl say and even though I haven't heard any of their recent music I can still say that I'd never say anything bad about their music because it's theirs. I do mostly love their old music, but I also know that I can come to love any of their music. I think the first song I heard from them was Cage and that got me hooked. I also listened to songs like Ain't Afraid to Die, Machiavellism, Child Prey, Domestic F*cker Family, Mr.Newsman, Jessica, Umbrella, and others that I can't seem to think of right now *lol* and they've all been absolutely awesome.

I recommend Deg and start out with the older stuff if you can cuz that's what really gets you hooked. I also recommend Laruku and I myself started with Finale, which is probably my favorite song from them. Gackt and Hyde both have awesome voices and though Gackt can mostly be poppy he can do rock too. I haven't had much of a chance to listen to Pierrot, but I listened to thier song Smly Skeleton and loved it. Also, I don't know if this would be considered jrock, but I listened to this band called Flow and thought that their song Go!! was awesome and really addicting. Anyways, I hope you can come to enjoy jrock as much as the rest of us and I'll stop rambling now. *lol* ^^

Ohh i should agree with that i guess:D Its true! And yeah their new stuff is still amazing for example i love Clever Selazoid. Can't wait for their new album or single!! 🕺

yup! :-)

Kyo is an elf. No seriously, look at him. He is an elf. Just think about it.... It makes complete sense.

You really have to search around to find stuff you like, since a lot of good bands have fallen through the cracks of media and popular attention. Here are some relatively easy-to-find works, though.

Since you like Linkin Park, check out Gackt's Crescent and Diabolos album. Those two bands are extremely different, but the emotion-driven rock and ballads really show in those albums (not that that's a bad thing).

You mentioned Green Day. The only punk rock band I know is Kuroyume, but I know there are some others...

Blink 182... I haven't listened much to their music. I have a hunch that you might want to check out FAKE?'s first two albums, Breathe In and Tomorrow Today. After that, since those two albums they've fleshed out their music to be better compositionally and in complexity, so you can easily branch out into their later works if you like their first two albums. Also, the lead singer, Ken Lloyd, sings in perfect English, being half-British. However, FAKE?'s music is the most Western-feeling band, for obvious reasons.

Maybe also check out baroque, but I haven't listened to them that much to say this with confidence. Rock, with a slightly urban tinge to it? The album's on my computer, I just haven't listened to it much...

Dutch Baka: All I can say is dl some music if you like em you like em, if you don't you don't. I wouldn't be too concerned with their visual appearance, at least not at this point. I've been listening to j-bands for about 5 months now and I've only seen 1 video and could really care less about the whole visual-kei thing. Sure the costumes are fun and interesting but I don't go gaga over them, if anything they are a big turn off for me, lol.

I agree. Don't worry about appearances. For some it's a plus, for others it's a minus. Whatever it is, it's only a supplement, not a major core, of the music itself.

jpopsuki is nice, considering that's where I found paris match, which is now in my top 3 bands list. Sometimes you find treasures like these that makes everything worth while, even though most of the time the torrents are drivel that I couldn't care less for.

By the way, for some reason, if you use http://magnetbox.com/riaa/search.asp to find out which CDs are related to the RIAA, some Japanese record labels, such as Sugizo's and L'arc en Ciel's, turn out to be RIAA-associated. Odd, considering these are Japanese, not American. Anyone know the reason for this? I'm too paranoid to use bittorrent now.

What other chioce is there? hehe.. It is almoust impossible to get J-rock here.. The only thing awailable is anime soundtracks.. but even the store that has it dont have much at all! But they have tons of the latest anime and manga:-) And on a very very rare occation they have j-rock.. they used to have X-Japans art of life.. #1 song ever:-)

Kozi - Mise Mono Koya sounds a lot like the music used in The Godfather. An Italian feel with a bit of french influence thrown in a la Betty Blue. The strings then give it that Japanese twist. A good piece of music.
