Gozu - weirdest movie I've ever seen

Really.. really weird. Not what I was expecting at all. It was definitely entertaining, I laughed out loud a few times. Overall I enjoyed it but I just can't get over how strange the plot was.
As the credits began to roll.. this was me:

Gozu is a pretty good Miike film, though there are probably weirder films I've seen, even by him... Check out Survive Style 5+ (not Miike) or The Happiness of the Katakuris (Miike)

I saw survival style 5+. I liked it. Worth a watch IMO, but sometimes can be hard to follow if you don't pay attention

actualy yukio_michael i believe it was your recommendation in another thread about yakuza films that brought me to Gozu. I also recently watched Violent Cop, another recommendation from that thread, which I enjoyed. I will have to check out your other recommendations.

This style of cinematography reminds me of movies like David Lynch's Mulholland Drive but with far more humour.

I know exactly what you mean. Gozu was full of peculiar characters who seem to be on the edge, like those detectives in Mulholland Drive; they just don't fit in.

I've seen many Miike films, not always satisfied, but Gozu is one of my favorites.

As a matter of fact I saw it last week on cable. I was flipping through the channels came upon it, thought it was stupid and surfed other channels. About 15 min later I came across it again and was soon captivated. It was one of the weirdest movies I have ever seen, especially the ending. That is one ending for the books.

Now I want to see it again from the beginning (as I missed the first 25 min or so) and figure some things out, like how the guy died, the obaasan and her obsession with breast milk (The scene with the cow was really something!) and the beating of her brother who she said could contact the dead. Definitely some weird characters and even weirder scenes.

To me it was like watching someone else's weird dream or nightmare where nothing fit or made sense, but yet, it did make sense in some weird way.

If you watch it, be prepared for some really weird stuff.

I'm sort of an Asian cinema freak, so, I hope you get some entertainment out of the titles I suggest.

Violent Cop, an early film, I wasn't so much impressed with--- it seemed disjointed, though Kitano's role in it was as usual, superb.

I'm going to agree with you here about Gozu... as compares to David Lynch.... I found Mulholland Drive discernible, well, after reading many an article about the plot and the connections between events... It's probably my favourite Lynch movie.

If you are interested in Miike, you might look into the book Agitator.

It's interesting to note that the horrible film Hostel, was inspired by Miike's "Audition"....

I really need some new Japanese films, it's been a year since I left Japan, and I so want to see some new films.
