The Bummer and Rant Thread

I try not to complain about the weather, but the last three days here in Philly were downright B-R-U-T-A-L, thanks to the godawful heat wave that blanketed the east coast. From Tuesday through Thursday it was miserable, high 90's to triple digits during the day and no relief at night as temps only dropped to around 80. It was too hot even to hop on my machine which is why I'd been absent here for a brief bit. But, the heat wave finally broke late Thursday night and it's finally a little comfortable.

Normally, I don't drive into work all that often because the afternoon traffic is horrible, but I drove all three days for no other reason than to be in an air conditioned cabin in said afternoon rather than deal with mass transit. Whew! Just going around the corner to the cleaners yesterday to pick up clothes was a chore and a half. It was icky to the tenth power, but the really sad part was that four seniors died from a combination of heat and heat-related illnesses on Thursday, easily the worst day of the bunch temperature-wise. I tell you, folks, even though I love summer, this one can't end soon enough to suit me!

I don't know if this qualifies as a bummer, but it sure bummed me out. Around ten thirty Saturday night when I went to bed after watching qualifying games for the Little League World Series on ESPN, something unusual happened. After hopping in bed and turning off the lights, for some unknown reason, I was suddenly terrified to close my eyes, I mean, for some thirty seconds or so, I was in an actual state of fear before I finally calmed down and managed to fall asleep, though it took a good deal longer than usual.

I don't know what could've caused it, however, I suspect that little incident was linked to perhaps my greatest fear: dying in my sleep. That scares me more than anything, closing my eyes one night and never opening them again. When it's my time to shuffle off this mortal coil (which I hope won't happen for a LONG time to come), I wanna look the Grim Reaper in the eye and give him the one-finger salute before he sends me on my way, whether to heaven or hell. Being ambushed in the middle of the night bothers me no end.

Not to sound morbid, but has anyone out there had an experience like I had, or has the same fear as me?

Goodness Flashjeff, I never had an experience like that, but it sounds frightening. :?
Just recently, I had a bad costumer service experience. My friend and I wanted to browse through Cole Haan which is a very upscale store, I mean upscale, they sell coats that cost thousands of dollars. 😲 But anyways, we were just browsing through the collection of handbags. I simply wanted to know who the designer for a handbag in particular and I tried ask the sales associate, but then instead of being polite she had the nerve to act snotty by saying "oh that bag cost two hundred dollars." I knew that bag was two hundred dollars. She was just so rude about it, she could've been more helpful. I know why she acted that way, too. My friend and I looked as if we didn't have the money, (which we didn't), but still, you don't treat people like that. I hate it when I recieve terrible costumer service.

To me, that's a great way to check out. I'd rather die that way than dying in some horrible accident or a lingering terminal illness and knowing that you're going to die.

I guess you have a point there, but that way, you never know when it'll happen. To me, that's what I find most worrisome, not knowing.

Ma Cherie: That was a despicable way to have been treated. It sounds like that salesperson had already judged you and your friend and deemed you unworthy to shop in her store, and that's no way for someone like her to have acted. I used to work at Neiman-Marcus which is as highscale as you can get and I've seen people dressed like they lived on the street pull fat wads of hundred dollar bills out of the pockets and buy stuff like there's no tomorrow. It's all about customer service, and if you don't get it, then vote with your feet and shop someplace else. Lost sales because of surly salespeople is a sure fired method of increasing the quality and neccessity of good customer service.

A minor bummer: Sunday night, my TV up and suddenly died. No, not the big one in my living room, I'm talking about the rinky-dink 13 incher in my bedroom. I was watching the 10 p.m. news just before bed for the latest weather report as it was rather nasty out that evening when suddenly----POOF! The screen just winked off, no picture, no sound, no nothing. I unplugged it, plugged it back in and tried turning it on. Nada. I only had the thing little over a year, and maybe I play it a couple of times a week, no reason for it to give up the ghost, given how infrequently I used it, but that's what happened. The last set I had in my bedroom lasted 12 years, this one, thirteen months! Now I gotta replace it, even though it died well before it's time. How darn frustrating!

Jeff...sometimes you can take off the back cover and find an inline fuse for the power supply. It may be as simple as replacing the fuse! I wouldn't take it to a repair shop...hardly worth the cost of repair since you can buy a new one for less than the cost to repair it, but if it turns out to be the fuse, shouldn't cost more than $1 at the local radio shack!

It could also be the circuit-breaker. There should be a re-set button on the back of the set.

To CC1 and ArmandV: I thought of that, but that set didn't have that. Bummer. Like I said, I'll just have to replace it. Thanks for the suggestions.

@ Flashjeff: about your experience going to sleep... well, I never had this overwhelming fear of just shutting my eyes and going to sleep, but sometimes I can't sleep for ages because as soon as I shut my eyes all the most horrible things I've ever seen in my life pass in front of the eyes of my mind... It's very difficult (sometimes impossible) to break out of it and I'm not sure why - it's like being in a nightmare except I know I'm awake. I can't breathe properly and can't move either (>_<). It's really horrible and can go on for an hour or more. :( It's getting a bit more infrequent but still happens regularly enough that I don't get enough good sleep - so annoying. And I feel so stupid in the morning, but at the time, I just wish I could die already right there.

@ Ma Cherie: wow, that really sucks. What a b!tch! People like that shouldn't be working in customer service. I always think, you never know who people are or where they've come from or anything about them - like Jeff said, someone who looks like a hobo could be really rich for all you'd know, so it's stupid to judge like that. I've even noticed things a bit like that, not in such a very expensive store (O_o) but in some 'quite' expensive ones (XD), that even just a little thing like changing my coat makes a difference. I wouldn't have believed it but going in with my shabby camo jacket I get all suspicious looks and a really curt treatment and looked at like I shouldn't be there, but if I go in wearing my long, expensive winter coat with fur and beads and gold embroidery trimming, I get a deferential and helpful look instead. I hate it when people are so shallow. ~_~

Jeff...you sound handy. Does it get power to the power supply? If so, is there power coming out of the other side of the power supply? Just a quick check...not necessary if you already chose to replace the TV though...but if you repair it you could sell it for a few bucks!

Kinsao: Sounds like you've got it worse than me. A penpal told me I had suffered a panic attack that night. A rarity for me, a first in fact, but it was plenty unnerving to say the least. I hope all works out well for you.

CC1: Me? Handy? HA! Don't be fooled! I need a manual just to change a light bulb! Fooling around with electronics isn't my cup of tea, besides, the old set is probably gracing a landfill or a junk dealer's backyard by now. But, thanks for the suggestion.

:-)

Yeah, after the double post, I realize that! (j/k!):-)

The week from hell !

Started out the week with a pinched nerve in my neck so bad, I can't move my left arm(waiting for MRI results to see if I need surgery). Wednesday broke a tooth off at the gumline (Front dead center) which made me look like a great redneck hillbilly. Friday I woke up with a rash that turned out to be a super bad case of shingles, feels like acid burning my skin. The only good thing I can think of on the whole deal, is i will be out of work for a week or two. Ugh! WHAT'S NEXT??

Poor ol Uncle Frank

:(

Reminds me of that joke about a missing dog. The dog's description was: blind in one eye, deaf in both ears and missing a leg. Answers to "Lucky."

I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE having to Work on Saturdays. And its early on Saturdays. So I can't do anything on Friday nights or else I will be dead at work on Saturday. I really hate it, but its required that everyone in my department works Saturdays.

Damn, Frank! You're the living example of that old saying, "If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all!" What happened? Did you piss off the gods or something? Talk about a string of misfortune! I hope you'll be better real soon!

🙂

Try being in the military (like I was) where you're always on duty, weekends and holidays. You have it lucky.

But now that I am married... Fck the weekend haha, I want to be with my wife * how will this be in 10 years from now?:p
