Your relationship with Japan

I was assigned to Japan as a member of the United States Air Force in March 1954. I returned to the US in January of 1956. I returned to Japan in October of 1966 as a civilian working for the General Electric Co and then returning to the US in July 1967.

My tour of duty was at Misawa (Aomori prefecture) Northern Honshu primarily but did visit Nemuro, Hokkaido for three months and Okushira Shima, Hokkaido for one month.

In 1966 I spent five months in the Tokyo environs and went to Okinawa for an additional 5 months.

umm..my grandfather is a japanese.. and he married my grandmother, who is indonesian..
well.. that makes me a quarter japanese..

This: Learn Japanese Online - JapanesePod101 is a great resource (there are of course, many many many more) that will get you started w/ listening comprehension. Watch a lot of television, more than you can bear, listen to the radio, find someone who wants to get to know you, take the initiative and buy them a gift as a way of introducing yourself--- someone in your neighborhood.

Never Been, but

I've had opportunities to go to Europe and the UK, but I turned them down because I wanted to go to Japan. My work, as a Bill Collector, has generally kept me unable to travel, plus I'm not someone who likes to go places that I can't really afford to enjoy it. But now that this entire book writing has started I'm sure that as long as I keep going the way that I'm going then the book will be released in Japan as well as the US.

I've really been scrambling to learn Japanese and at my age it's a challenge, but the rewards of being able to speak for myself and actually know what is being said around me is important to me. Especially since I actually enjoy conversation, kind of hard to do that with some guy translating, just seems kinda creepy to me.

my folks are shipping me over in my gap year when i take it. I've always loved Japan from the age of ten when i got into video games and now i love the music so it's a must to go to Japan and anyone who lives there y'all very very very lucky and i envy you!

My grandparents and their siblings are Japanese educated; their Mandarin is not so good for Taiwanese.

I have half Japanese half Taiwanese cousins that I never met who live in Japan. Two of my grandpa's brothers live in Japan and both are married to Japanese women. They were stuck in Japan after Taiwan and China had closed due to Political reasons. Since they were unable to go home, they had to stay in Japan and they were required to change their names to Japanese.

Finally, I have studied Japanese in University before.

I've been in Japan off and on for about 28 years - totalled up it comes to more than 15 years. I have lived and worked here full time since 1993.

I started with an interest in Origami as a child. Then I was interested in Katana and Samurai in general in high school - this was a few decades ago, long before the internet, so I just read anything I could find on it.

When I first came here in 1978 I made up my mind to think of the place I was coming as completely different from what I had read about - since one's perceptions through books and other experiences often have little connection to reality.

Anyway, here I am and I expect to stay for some time - probably until I retire.

I have just joined this forum and am finding it a bitdifficult t make sense of it!
I see you hve been living in Japan for 10 years. I am an artist doing a piece in Dublin about vending machines. In particular the japanese penchant for putting underware in them. Have you come across this in your 10 years? I would post a thread on this but cant figure out how to!!!

My father was stationed in Misawa Japan (far north Honshu, Aomori ken) twice when I was younger, so my combined time in Japan is about 5 years. The first time was in the late 70's, I was 8-10, and the second time was in the mid 80's when I was 13-15. Unfortunately I didn't learn much Japanese either time. I had a huge interest in the culture, but until I was in my 20's I had no desire to learn any foreign languages. I've wanted to learn Japanese (and other languages) for at least 10 years, but only just recently started studying Japanese. I hope to become fluent and I plan to at least visit Japan again, hopefully several times. Even better would be if I found a way to spend some long term time there.

I have always wanted to go to Japan... Ever since I could remember!! I just could never afford it!! ((Grew up in a pretty low income household))

But now that I am working and going to school, I think I will have enough money saved up... I plan on going with a friend in about two years. I am so excited! I think it's worth the wait.
