Could you give some source? I have some serious doubts that the whole of Japan was (even close to) a vegetarian society.

I am not saying Japanese food culture was complete vegan one.
In 675, the Emperor Tenmu announced the first meat eating regulation as described in Nihonshoki. And the Court was said to repeat the regulations after the first one, so Japanese did eat meat. It might be mere geographical factor that enabled Japanese to intake protein through fish. It all depends upon the definition of vegitarians.

In 1872, the Emperor Meiji himself encouraged Japanese to eat meat. There were a lot of funny episodes, say, some Japanese were a bit too awkward to eat beef, and they covered the Buddhist altars with white clothes when they ate beef for the first time for fear that their ancesters should get angry to see them eat beef.

In the context of dog meat, it was by the Western influence that Japanese quit it after the Meiji.

i cant imagine eatimg my pet ..
but some people in my country eat dogs, even though it's their pet ..
it's pretty common for them
usually they chopped them and mixed them w/ some special seasonings, and fried them ..

No way, no how! And I have a totally different reason for feeling the way I do. Wa-a-a-a-a-a-ay back in 1978 when I was in the Navy, my ship pulled into Subic Bay (Philipinnes) for a some R & R. One night, me and a buddy went into town to have some fun and promptly got lost looking for a restaurant other guys on our ship had raved about.

Well, we stumbled into an alley and, peering around a corner, we saw this dude in a chef's hat leaning out the back door of some eatery, trying to attract a small stray dog with a piece of raw meat, but he was hiding a cleaver behind his back. When the poor dog came into range, the guy grabbed him by the scruff of his neck, yanked him inside and shut the door. A few seconds later, we heard a loud chop, followed by an even louder yelp of pain. I think you folks can figure out the rest.

Needless to say, my buddy and I stopped looking for that restaurant, hell, for all we know, that might've been the place, so we went back to ship where we ate ALL our meals for the rest of the time we we in port. True story. And that's why I'll never eat dog meat.

Dog's meat is a popular viand (pulutan) that goes with beer, at least in this part of the world. Another one is Cat's meat which is rumored to be the reason why siopaos (steamed flour buns stuffed with meat) taste good. :sorry: 😊

hey flashjeff
i guess i would nderstand the trauma
actually i think thats why many people dont like the idea of eating dogs
we imagine that they are some stray or some pet that just gets stolen and cooked

maybe if we could picture dogs as farm animals it wouldnt be so bad

I need to cut down on meat anyway...
I don't want to eat my dog, or anyone else's pet, but I guess if I was somewhere where they did eat it, I guess I would. I've eaten snake, aligator, and ostrich... lots of raw seafood-- dog doesn't seem all that bad.
I remember reading that the Lewis and Clark expedition traded salmon for dogmeat.

I voted no,

but I have eaten horse before, in Japan.
The oportunity came first at a sushi diner - raw(I think?).

Then we happened upon a small tavern after we got off the Shinkansen
way up north. The hostess just placed a bowl with some veggies
in front of us. I didn't want to offend her, but maybe they were
trying to get a funny reaction out of us (which they did), so we
were like, 'what the heck. when is this ever going to happen again'.
My american travelling companion wrote down a phrase I said,
"I've got horse stuck between my teeth."

DOG,
here in Wisconsin we have a sizable Hmong community
and in high school some racists used to say they would
steal your dog for food. My friend's mother (european decent)
used to work at a Hmong center and she would get very
P.O.ed if people would spread such lies. That's all.

Poor Flash Jeff... that really is traumatic, I have seen the video footage of what goes on, but its completely different if it happens right in front of you.
Those dodgy back alleyways in SEAsia... its amazing what goes on in them, I too have seen a fair few things.

Yeah, that was traumatic. Oh, I forgot to mention that I had a dog when I was a kid, a German Shepard named "Champ" who I loved and was my buddy, so that only added to the horror of that night in the alley in Subic.

After arriving in Japan, I've eaten many many things that I thought I never would, and you know what? Most of it wasn't so bad. So, yes, I would eat dog meat. No question.

Of course I wouldn't eat my pet, though!:)

I'm not trying to spark some vicious nationalistic debate or anything so pointless as that. I am just genuinely curious about how people from different cultures and backgrounds feel about eating dog meat. I myself haven't tried it. I believe in Korea, China and Vietnam, eating dog is acceptable but I was wondering if it was just acceptable or do people say to each other...hey...lets have dog tonight. Do rich people eat it? Poor people? Everybody?
I had a Chinese Malaysian friend who told me that dog meat was quite smelly and that it had to be cooked for a long time with many spices for it to taste good.
Have you eaten it?
Is it good?
Does the idea of eating dog meat repulse you?
Sometimes feel like killing and eating your neighbors dog because it doesn't stop barking all night?
Any comments are welcome.

well i coudn't just eat it, it would need to be a side dish to something, put it with a bit of fish and i could have dinner with my cat.

My Japanese friends name Naoya and Daisuke ate Dog foods such as Pedigree.

Like you have any friends, go home to your mother, then again, she rejected you.

Now now, were all friends here.

As for eating dog meat, maybe if i was starved and had no other alternative but, even as open minded as i am, theres only so much of a new culture i can accept, just as a muslim who moves to the UK is unlikely to eat pork, im just unlikely to eat dog meat, thats just not a westerner thing, i've been brought up to love doggies and hug them and take them for walks and treat them as a member of the family, so the idea of eating a dog to me, is up there with cannibalism, BUT, that doest make eating dog meat wrong, or wierd, the japanese love to eat seafood but their may be a culture that see's the idea of eating a shrimp or fish as taboo and odd and unthinkable as we do eating dogs or cats or gerbils, lol, so no, eating dogs isnt wrong, its just not something a westerner is likely, and should be expected to do.

It reminds me of the many times my girlfriend is eating seaweed and i'll go "aww yuck!" just to kid her around and she'll be like "haggis is yuck aswell".
Now seaweed personally isnt that great, its like a pretty bland soggy vegetable to me so i dont like it anyway that much (unless in small quantities) but, you know, its edible, provides nutrition, its just never occured to westerners to eat it like we eat bread or carrots or something.
Just as its never occured to the Japanese that haggis is actually pretty damn good...what?....it is.... ☝

Look at all of Puzzle's posts. He was intentionally trying to upset people. Oh yes, his posts were all deleted, I believe. We would do well to just move on and keep in mind that there are people out there who enjoy sowing seeds of destructruction.

Dragons!!!!?? Hehehe.

I thought you only could eat dragons during Medieaval times, especially when the dragons were reckoned to be an endangered species...:D

If it was served to me, why not? But I don't really like dogs anyways. I'd have more trouble eating a cat because I'm fond of them. The Lewis and Clark team that first explored the American West ate dog meat almost exclusively.

I confess that I answered that 'I would respect a host' ... but I might find it a lttle daunting .... because ... I now like dogs!

Used to be a "cat-man" through and through - until my son and wife almost insisted on getting a pooch one year. We did.

My life was never the same. He's now long gone and I hated him at first ... but ... 😭 loveable old bugger!

... I would give it a try, though. But I suspect, a dog being a carnivore ... not that good eating.

(This post is dedicated to the memory of "George" .... )

ニ淡ニ停?。ニ停?

I think I could eat almost anything to be polite to my host... I have eat some pretty gross stuff...but it is definitely not something I would seek out on my own...

@lexico - that was very interesting... thank you
@bartbeanie - hey, a fellow floridian...
