I hear ya MCS. Let me just say that I do not disagree with you at all. Don't worry we're not immigrants as we are moving next year before we procreate so we won't contribute to the linguistic erosion in Belgium.
 
haha, sorry i didn't mean to sound xenophobic, i recently saw a documentary about this issue in belgium when it comes to french speaking flemish and dutch speaking walloons and people from brussels.
i think because my french is a disaster it freaks me out when i'm in brussels and i can't communicate with people unless they speak english. =/

my girlfriend's mum is japanese but moved here when she married a belgian. it's amazing she left 'almost' everything behind and adjusted here in belgium, i know dutch is not one of the most easy languages either and i even started learning japanese because i wish to go there. i think it's cool to speak someone else's language, it shows a lot of respect when you try..i wish i felt the same way about french (it was one of those nightmare classes in school for me) because i really don't like the language so i'm a bit of the narrow minded *** not trying harder to speak french
 
(European) Portuguese for me. I also speak English fluently, although I still need to fine up a little to become better. As for French, I know almost nothing about it. I'd like to learn Japanese, though.
 
I'm native Dutch and well as most dutch people you could call me a native English speaker too
 
My mother tongue is Dutch how ever I am also fluent in German, English and French and master Japanese for a big part allready since I have been self learning for about 1'5 year + did 1'5 evening school in Japanese. Can't wait to get back at it.~♥
 
French native.
English fluent, I also can speak Spanish quite good indeed, though my German has to be ameliorated...
Currently learning Japanese, wich I am fighting for ( kanjis ), I used to learn norwegian as well.

kanji are nuuuuts ! but it's fun when you're starting to really take them in and being able to read labels at supermarkets etc..just random but so rewarding.
 
I'm a language student, which has me speakng five languages.

Although out of these.
Only the flemish [the home tongue] and oddly enough english are my two languages which I have perfectly mastered.

English though, is my 4th language, and not a Country language.

Belgians have german, flemish[dutch], wallonian[french] as official languages.
English is a commonplace fourth, and spanish is a very optional 5th for language students.

We get french from early age though, which makes it embarassing enough to say I'm not good enough to confidently use my french.

In writing.

I can perfectly speak languages due to the fact I can mold my voice to any tone, but writing is a nightmare at times.

The problem seems to be that due to my english evolving quicker then french, and the flemish inbred anti french attitude work against my french. It's odd to explain but it is like due to my knowledge of english and dutch, I wantto use the logic behind those two languages to use on french.

Which doesn't work.

Although after I set a confident standard for german french and spanish, I wanna take up japanese x3
 
My Mother tongue is German.

But I also would say I'm really good at speaking english (not so much in writing but I'm used to speak english) ^^

And I want to learn japanese and spain (because I need a second language for my A-level) later
 
Good Russian) Second might be Romanian... But I;m not sure, I know it enough...

English, then French, then Japanese although now my Japanese is better than my French...or should I say my French is worse than my Japanese.
 
Well since I'm a Bulgarian naturally my native tongue is Bulgarian I also speak English(trying to improve it every day) and a little Japanese...
 
I am native greek, very fluent in english, good at french although i dont use it and now i am trying to advance with my japanese which i study for about a year!
 
I don't suppose there are a lot of Bulgarians in Japan. You're not in Kichijouji by any chance?

Well, those are the ones I can use fluently, too bad my parents and my grandparents can no longer converse in my true mother tongue anymore. Sadly, so am I.

You specify Cantonese (considered by some linguists to be a dialect, by others to be a language) but then you also mentioned Chinese. Do you mean Mandarin?
 
Yup, Mandarin. Cantonese and Mandarin are similar but there's still differences. From where I am, we identify Chinese as Mandarin while Cantonese as Cantonese. In school, we are forbid to speak Cantonese and any other languages except Malay, English, and Chinese.

Most of us didn't care anyway, so you may hear all the dialects above +Hainan, Teoh Cheoh, some minor Japanese and Korean during recess times, especially when we're biting each others' heads off.
 
Dutch here!

I am attempting to learn Japanese which has been a good experience so far! I can read/write Hiragana, practising Katakana and still need to start with Kanji (which would be hard i guess).

O, yeh and i can also speak English very well.
 
my mother language is Lithuanian. i'm considering whether there is more of Lithuanian in this forum. :} i can't boast of very good English language knowledge, but somehow i can understand it and speak in English quite well.
 
my mother tough is arabic bt i mastered english as i speak english more than arabic in school. i also know japanese bt i am still a beginner i also intend to learn korean as for french i kinda hate it cuz i hate my french teacher bt i still learn that at school i see that i like to learn every together unlike others here bt i can really spaek japanese at home with my elder sister only and i think it's kinda funny how u feel when u hear a new language bt i got used to it and really want to speak all those in the future i really do. do u agree that learning new things is actually fun? cuz i do
 
My mother tongue is English and it is the only language that I could speak fluently.
 
English here, I also was fluent in Filipino (Tagalog) when I was a young child, but after moving back to England (and later Wales) I forgot it all!

Hope to someday be fluent in Japanese (obviously!), Mandarin, French, Russian, Spanish, Italian and German. Ambitious I know, but ambition is my middle name!
