A total lunar eclipse, when the full moon passes completely into Earth's shadow, will be visible across Japan on 3 March. The phenomenon occurs when the sun, Earth, and moon align almost in a straight line. Observers nationwide should be able to watch the eclipse for about an hour from around 20:00, weather permitting. The moon will appear in the eastern sky.
During a total lunar eclipse, the moon often turns a dark copper-red colour. Sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere scatters shorter blue wavelengths, allowing mainly red light to reach the lunar surface. The partial phase will begin at 18:50 and end at 22:18. Totality, when Earth's shadow fully covers the moon, is expected from 20:04 to 21:03.
The next total lunar eclipse visible in Japan is forecast for the early hours of 1 January 2029.
