Starbucks Japan is set to introduce a new eco-friendly straw made from 99% plant-based materials, such as vegetable oil. Developed by Kaneka and trademarked as Green Planet, these straws significantly reduce CO2 emissions and waste compared to paper alternatives. The green-coloured straws are fully biodegradable in seawater and soil, addressing microplastic concerns. Starting 23 January, 32 Okinawa stores will be the first to adopt these straws, followed by a nationwide rollout in March. By April, all Starbucks Japan stores will use these 6mm and 10mm straws for iced beverages and Frappuccinos, respectively.

This marks Starbucks Japan's first straw policy shift since adopting paper straws in January 2020. While the paper alternative aligns with the company's sustainability goals, customers frequently complain about its durability because it softens mid-use and ruins the flavour of drinks. The new biomass plastic straws are touted to resist softening, preserving drinks' texture and taste. The same material is also used in 7-Eleven Japan's straws for its Seven Cafe drinks.
