Japanese IME

???????Does this forum have trouble maintaining kana and kanji? I could see japanese writing a couple of days ago, but now it's just garbled characters. Any suggestions?

Short version
- Some messages have been " damaged and won't display properly.
- Most messages will display properly if you manually select the right encoding.
- If you can read this こんにちは then you should be OK for most new messages without having to manually select the right encoding.
(If you couldn't read that then say what Browser and OS you are using.)

Ok, I have IME and I can see Jp and type it all fine and dandy. but I cant input Jp on Aol Instant Msger, and I also can't see Jp in the My Computer folder, or in some other programs like WinMX. (I have Windows XP)

Can someone please help me out??

I hate Instant Messenger programs so I haven't used it myself - but I hear that the standard AOL IM doesn't work with Japanese - you have to get the Japanese version.

You need to set the default for non-Unicode programs to use Japanese code pages.

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Regional & Language Options
-> Advanced -> Languages for Non-unicode programs [Japanese]

There will be some minor side-effects.

Incidently that's the wrong わ it should be こんにちは (although it's not uncommon for the wrong spelling to be used).

I swear i have posted this message 3 times, but thank you for fixing my japanese encoding, but i have one more problem. after i got the japanese language bar working, then the other bars (i.e. Quick Launch) shut off my ability to see the open windows title on the taskbar. wierd huh? so now i have to scroll through all of my windows with alt+tab. and that kinda sucks, any ideas (sorry if i seem pitiful.)?

If your taskbar is locked - unlock it. (Right click -> (Un/)Lock the taskbar)
You should be able to drag it around the place - mine is on the far right next to the system tray with about one icon showing.
You can also show/hide the language bar. (Right click taskbar -> Toolbars -> Language bar)
You can also have the language bar free-floating (Right click language bar -> Restore language bar).

If none of those work let me know.

Nope, i've tried moving things all over the place, unlocking and locking, messing with the toolbars, restarting over and over. I still can't see the window tabs......しまった。

I have the Japanese IME. In the past I have used it without incident. But after reinitializing, I cannot seem to figure out why it is not functioning correctly. For example, if try to write "konnichiwa," this is what I get:

It has a chacters assigned to each individual key it seems. I don't understand this one bit. I never had this sort of problem before and I reset all the setting to the default. Also, there is no menu in the language bar that allows to to select an "A" or anything like that. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Could someone show me what their IME looks like and what their settings are on? I really need to figure out why it's not letting me input Japanese text correctly.

Hmm... that's strange.
When I restore the bar (from its minimized state), and changed to Japanese, it doesn't show the extra settings with the "A" either, until a click onto a text box. Then I change to hiragana input mode. Maybe try removing it and putting it back on again.

Hm I tried that, but to no effect. The keyboard layout I'm selecting is Japanese Input System (MS-IME 2002). Is this the correct one?

Also the only option I get to select from the additional icons on the language bar is one that turns caps lock on and one that says kana. Clicking this to on gives text like what I demonstrated before.

So it's not even waiting for me to put in a syllable, it's just giving each letter a katakana symbol. Bah makes sense to me.

Okay one further question. the bar sure seems to like to switch between English and Japanese a lot. Is this normal? I'd prefer that it just stay whatever way I put it. Mostly because I can keep it on Japanese all the time because I can use direct input for English.

Well this one I can help with.

Un-install English as an input language - it does wonders for cutting back on the 'changing-languages' confusion. The only draw back is if you need [great britain pound] or similar symbols that aren't on the Japanese keyboard.

Neither of them are done with spaces, and neither is completely right. When you hit the space bar when using IME, it converts the kana into kanji.

Now onto your questions. In the first sentence, the wa should be written は, because it is the topic marker. Also, Belgium is ベルギー, and not ベリギ. Lastly, when writing foreign words it is conventional to use katakana, and not hiragana.

Your second sentence doesn't really make any sense, because the kanji don't fit. It could be either 私はベルギー人です, or you could just write わたし, instead of using the kanji for it. I recommend that you learn about how kanji work before trying to use them. They are a subject all their own.

For WinXP. it's actually on your computer. You just have to select it and have it installed.
Go to Control Panel and select Date, Time, Language...

That should have been "Regional and Language Options".
Although the 'comments' field is "Customise settings for the display of languages, numbers, times and dates."

Select the language link, and a small window should open.
Click the Languages tab on the top. Make sure Install files for East Asian Languages is checked.
A little above that, click Details. Then click Add...
Select Japanese as the input language and click ok.
That should install it. You'll always have this little "Language bar," which lets you switche between Japanese input and English (if that's what you have by defualt), which you can minimize and it'll take up a small space on your taskbar. Switch to Japanese to type Japanese in text fields.

Wrong 'wa'. The particle 'wa' sounds like 'wa' but is written with the 'ha' kana.
