Washington Post has a rather reactionary article (Aug 27, 2006) up concerning the aquiecence of one journalist to another over the first journalists words concering Japan's so-called rise in nationalism, and of course, Koizumi's visit to the infamous Yasukuni shrine.

I do happen to believe that there is a rise in Japanese nationalism, specifically as concerns China... However, the text of the Post report concerning one Japanese journalist pulling a story blamed as anti-Japanese by another journalist, would lead one to believe there to be a vast right-wing conspiracy afoot.

The capitulation was breathtaking. But in the political atmosphere that has overtaken Japan, it's not surprising. Emboldened by the recent rise in nationalism, an increasingly militant group of extreme right-wing activists who yearn for a return to 1930s-style militarism, emperor-worship and "thought control" have begun to move into more mainstream circles -- and to attack those who don't see things their way.

The so-called capitulation doesn't seem breathtaking or very surprising to me, considering the history of Japan's media industry--- Titling the piece "Japan's Thought Police", gives the article a hyperbole that seems either uninformed or intentionally reactionary.

I don't recal their ever being a standard of public criticism in Japan. I don't think it is that common to criticise other Japanese publically--- The author ties in some un-related political goings on that seem to promote his idea of a cabal of power-usurping politicians--- but is there a new sense of self-censorship in Japan, or has it always been this way?

what a propagandas. lol

Really ?

Someone's overall posts @ Jref very much in-line with Japanese shadowy right-wing network in this news article,as changing political climate continues to proceed in Japan.

most of them are korean and burakumin that like Black noisy bans
for example
the harakiri guy who did arson of kato's house is member of 窶佚・窶愿コ窶怒窶慊ッ窶摘窶ーテッ
Dainihon-douhou-kai窶佚・窶愿コ窶怒窶慊ッ窶摘窶ーテッ is one of famous N-korean related organization under sumiyoshi(ツ住窶ケg....Yakuza)
Kato revived as a politician though he lost a house.

Burakumin is the ethnic Japanese untouchable class and Koreans are Zainichi Chosunjins.

They're probably propaganda tools hire by Yakuza and Japanese right-wing network.Yakuza crime syndicate has strong foothold in Japan's domestic political world, they've pocketed many well-known politicians.

ultra uyoku wants japan to make dirty as a propagandas....

The foreigner is cheated by them.

Guys, you do realize that the online journal that suspended its operation because they questioned some Japanese foreign policy is run by the Japan Institute of International Affairs, a government related organ?

Hence, it shows a tendancy to shoot down any opposition to the current right-wing line. Also, look at the government's previous lack of comment or defense of politicians who came out aganist some Japanese policies and the same politicians were attacked by right-wing adherents, with Ishihara (now the current Governor of Tokyo) even verbally supporting a death threat issued aganist one such threatened politician.

The LDP itself seems thinly disguised as a soft right wing enforcer with a myopic vision, of 'Down with foreigners, long live nationalism in Japan'.

That there are many Koreans in Japanese uyoku orgs is a rather well-known fact, actually.
PAUL BAYLIS, Korean activist braces for 'storm of fascism' (Asahi Shimbun News Service, Dec. 9, 2001):
"Shin Sugok was 20 when she made a mistake that changed her life.... 'I'm just a cheerful Korean,' she said, charming the interviewers and winning a four-month position, which eventually stretched out to four years.... Most of those who appear to be right-wingers, she says, are just frustrated people feeling the same sense of isolation that minorities such as herself feel. Many, in fact, are Koreans, she said. 'They just want to be loved by the Japanese. The real problem is the persistent refusal to grant full rights to foreigners. Foreigners are not seen as fully human. When it comes to `internationalization,' it is the Western foreigner with blue eyes that people think of.'' Tony Laszlo, a representative of Issho Kikaku, a nonprofit group that researches and lobbies on multicultural issues, says he often calls upon Shin's expertise, especially on matters related to Korean residents in Japan. 'One of the things that makes Shin quite special is that she has a very good presence. She is capable of getting a message across in a compact way, an understandable way,'' he said. ``She cares very much about how Japanese society will be shaped going into the future.' During a lecture to Asahi Shimbun staff three years ago, Shin raised the issue of identifying minorities in criminal cases. If a Korean is suspected in a kidnapping, she said, the police identify him by his Korean name. If a Korean is the victim, police identify him by his Japanese name."

At the end of World War II, Kodama was arrested by the United States as a Class A war criminal. He was held in Sugamo Prison with Ryoichi Sasakawa, where the two formed a long friendship

I think it's easier just to bow to nationalistic pressure, rather than there being a direct nationalistic influence... At the risk of avoiding death threats, violence, etcetera--- I think that this sort of pressure will lead to a lot of what I refered to previously as self-censorship... Something that I think people are missing when they read into this.

Is Japan becoming more nationalistic, yes. It's much easier to strengthen these sorts of ideas when the economy is tanked... In times when the economy is doing really good there is less ground to whip up this sort of frenzy as Chomsky might say for nationalism, to protect Japan from those invading hordes of foreigners...

I for one entertain the notion Japanese are closet nationalists, they submerged their nationalism under the shadow of American military occupation.

Japan has employed the American as a Mercenary now.
Whenever the history of the world is seen, the country that cannot defend the home country by thier hand has been ruined.
Japan is abandoning sovereignty by article 9.
it is not a normal coutry.
china and korea gave the Japanese a big chance to reconsider that

Other than immigration, and its dealings with foreginers, I don't think Japanese nationalism goes outside of Japan--- Is Japan returning to a nation of imperialism--- no. Nationalism is an effective means, as I've said--- or at the least aluded to, of control--- It's effective in getting the country to go along with any thing that the government wants to do simply because it seems to be in the best interest of Japan.

American Flags, yellow ribbons, and Mom & Apple pie work the same way for the United States. Patriotism is what seperates the loyal, from the heretics.

I for one entertain the notion Japanese are closet nationalists, they submerged their nationalism under the shadow of American military occupation.
I think your right, but I think there is a different type of nationalism occuring now. Nationalism based mainly on the personal politcal gain of a specific group.

Japan is abandoning sovereignty by article 9.

Japan is a sovereign nation with world's 4th ranking modern military capabilities,is only bind to Article 9 in the Constitution imposed by the occupied American Military Forces otherwise meaningless words.

Since early 1990's,Japan's Diet on and off debated to scrap Article 9.

Japan never mended fences with Koreans and Chinese peoples.

.
the ordinarily country and Japan:
definition : what is the ordinarly country?
A basic spirit of a past self-defense-only is completely denied.
In a national crisis, the defense war can be done by the Prime Minister's order
Japan throws away an ordinarly country for 60 years by providing Article 9 of the constitution after the www2 and will have continued an abnormal country
The constitution in all countries : the war. It is not regulated as the crime.
The war is lawful because it does by the resolution of the Diet.
it is contradicted to judge the result of the war done under legality (disturbance and bloodshed) by the law, Tokyo war crimes tribunal is invalid in the national law.
Japan had not made an effort to prove invalidity all and to obtain international recognition.
therefore It is natural that Japan is still made shouldering the disgrace as the invasion country.
*defference of Self-D( military capabilities)and army(war potencial capabilities)
in paragraph 2 of article 9
Article 9 prohibits the war potential capabilities
war potential capabilities is not the military capabilities.
Military capabilities is the second place in the world
"If military capabilities cannot be used, it does not become a war potential capabilities. "
This revision is a reform to make military power of the Self Defense Forces a
war potential capabilities
The Self Defense Forces become the self-defense armies
It is a problem how to use it though it has a lot of ...
a cat can not use money though she has alot..
that is, There is no law made to function as a war potential.
for example,
The Self Defense Forces are civil servants first.
they are not an army.
there is no military court In Japan .
As a result, they can be judged as a group or a corps.
Article 9 of the constitution was an apology of Japan.
Why is it a constitution (Article 9) revision?
The sovereignty state is a country that takes the responsibility for the safety of the home country.
Japan abandoned even sovereignty for reflection and the apology to a past war.
There is no safety in the place in which no war potential capabilities
It is common sense in an ordinarly country.
Japan became a voluntarily abnormal country and was devoted to reflection and the apology.
At the above sentence of the constitution in Japan......
It was determined that maintained our safety and living in fair and the faith of the various nations people who loved peace trusting it.
If the war potential capabilitiesis abandoned, the threat is not given to any country all over the world.
Moreover, it was believed that Japan received neither the threat nor the
invasion from the world.
The sincerity of the war reflection and the apology that Japan threw away
sovereignty was betrayed.
It was proven.......
Japan that had believed fair and the faith of the nations people who loved
peace was wrong.
The United States declared that it did not use force to North Korea last year.
it means............
Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and the United States of America and the United States nuclear umbrella disappeared. ......Japan believed safety in Japan
"Regrettable awaking of the Japanese people who love peace"

Caster51,

You seem to be drifting away from the main thread.

Other than immigration, and its dealings with foreginers, I don't think Japanese nationalism goes outside of Japan

Well, in a sense it does go outside because Japanese writers and governemnt figures do spread Japanese right-wing rhetoric outside Japan (and raise a lot more reaction than inside Japan, which is literally none).

I think your right, but I think there is a different type of nationalism occuring now. Nationalism based mainly on the personal politcal gain of a specific group.

You mean most Japanese, including those who blindly follow the national lead as long as it's expected fromt heri group(s)?

Yes, but where nationalism & imperialism had a direct effect on people outside of Japan prior to WWII. But whom does this effect? It's dangerous in that people probably random people, or paid off yankii, are taking it upon themselves to do such onerous things as torch peoples houses, threaten violence etc, for various people offering any voice of dissent.

At the end of the day, as long as trade isn't effected, than this sort of nationalism, nationalism that calls into question politician's ideas because they are Korean-Japanese, instead of pure Japanese, will remain purely academic discourse.

You mean most Japanese, including those who blindly follow the national lead as long as it's expected fromt heri group(s)?
I think this is the reaction that you are missing from your first statement. A lack of reaction is sort of like a reaction. It's a blind acceptance.

2ch (in 日本語) thread protesting the New York Times Japan-based correspondent Norimitsu Onishi's recent profile of prime-minister-in-waiting Abe Shinzo. (thanks marxy)

Much more moral clarity over on the thread, however, as posters want to know about this Japan-bashing writer Onishi. Apparently he is Korean-Japanese with Canadian citizenship. Comment 572 states 「大西は日本在住の、日本→カナダ国籍取った朝鮮人だよな。マジで殺されろ。」using a questionably-racist term for Koreans (朝鮮人) and then adding a cherry on top: "Seriously, he should be killed." The logic is clear: of course, he is bashing Japan, because he is #1 - not actually Japanese - and #2 - the Korean-Japanese live their whole life to bash Japan. Racial purity determines political outlook.

Somewhat typical 2ch anti-Korean banter... who does this type of nationalism effect outside of Japan, outside of ideolouges and academic discourse?
