Is there corporal punishment in Japan?

Just curious. It seems that the Japanese teachers and parents never spank Japanese kids?

Although legally banned in 1947, corporal punishment was still found in some schools in the 1980s. In late 1987, about 60 per cent of junior high school teachers felt it was necessary, with 7 per cent believing it was necessary in all conditions, 59 per cent believing it should be applied sometimes and 32 per cent disapproving of it in all circumstances; while at elementary (primary) schools, 2 per cent supported it unconditionally, 47 per cent felt it was necessary and 49 per cent disapproved.
