Is it rude to not post in your own threads?

I know I've been pretty guilty of this quite a bit as of late, so it got me to thinking when I saw this. Recently I've been busy with my impending move and all, but beside that, some of the threads I've made recently were done just with the goal of hearing other people's thoughts (as in the tattoo thread that got stickied) and others I think I've even forgotten about (as in...the one I forgot about...) I never really thought of my absence as rude, as I really didn't have anything to add to the conversation, but I can see how people might agree with Dave in that it's rude not to tend your own threads.

What do you think?

I think it is rude when a person asks for help or advice and never comes back to acknowledge it. That tends to happen mostly with new(er) members, some of whom registered apparently just to ask their question. Most baffling are those who ask their question and then never come back to check for responses. Most irritating are those whose last log-in makes it clear they did come back to check for responses, but lacked the courtesy to say a simple "thanks".

Also I think it depends if you're starting a thread to have a debate but you don't really give your own opinions... that's kinda weird, and also it could look just like you're trolling and trying to fire people up. Not that it's a bad thing to start a debate but if someone just says something provocative and then... disappears it doesn't look good.

And as Mike Cash says, people not saying thank you for help and advice is rude. But if you start a thread purely to impart information, it wouldn't seem rude to me to go away and leave it...

After reading this thread, I went to my Statistics List of posts started by me just to see if I made sure to thank folks for their help... looks like most of the time I did, and there were 2 where I did not.

There are also a few threads where, after I thanked them for their repsonse, more responses came in afteward that I had not noticed. Since I had considered my questioned "answered" and didn't bother to check back on that thread again after saying "thank you"...

Sounds more complicated than it should be... but I still appreciate the ongoing dialogue (now that I've noticed it)!

I'll wait a day if the thread is going slow.

If I post pictures, or videos, or anything similar to a "How To" as a thread starter, I will definately wait a while so I can say thanks, or give opinions all at once.

At the end, I believe it's rude, if you don't reply at all in a thread you started.

Apart from those things it's also very rude to discredit or to scorn a thread just because you don't like it instead of talking about the subject of the thread.
If you don't like a certain thread I think one simply have not to post in it, but not to make people feel embarrassed spurning it.

To answer the OP's question, I do believe that if you start a thread it is just plain old simple manners to participate in that thread even if the first post answers you question. As for topics where debates is likely, if you started it then you obviously have some intrest in that topic and I only think it natural you would participate.

I also understand that people have lives and forget about post or threads they have made and noone can address every post made, but when the OP comes back into the thread and calls someone a troll, it is obvious they have enough time to at least make a contribution to thread. But when they do that and that don't , thats when I find that that person is being rude.

I feel, as this is the internet, we all have busy lives outside the forums and sites we go too. I don't think it is necessary to respond in your own threads, if real life calls to you and you can't make a quick post. Regardless of when you last logged in.

Maybe I am just too mellow on the matter? I don't find it rude at all for these reasons:

-I don't personally know the user
-I could always post somewhere else
-living life is more important then the 'net

Now, if it was me who hadn't posted. Well, there is usually a good reason. I have a life and things need to be done and taken care of. Sometimes I forget, or I may be waiting for more responses.

If I've gotten my answer, I usually let people know that I am appreciative, and leave the topic open for further discussion. Or I ask to have it closed.

I've learned to not take things so personally, and sort of go with the flow.

Trouble is that it falls into the category of: People don't worry about being polite because they can hide behind an screen name, and nobody has any real authority over them. Clearly there are times when people just plain forget, as I have on the various forums I have posted in. So I personally think it is a combination of the two, and not a either of them by themselves.
