Yes, I forgot to mention Darius. He's a great player. I haven't seen for a long time him play in the NHL. But in the Russian team he plays gorgeously. One of my favourite players.

Evgeni Malkin is one of the most talented Russian young players. He spent absolutely startling 2005/2006 season in Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Ovechkin said that Malkin would become the best NHL rookie and overshadow Crosby. Well, I'd like to wish Malkin good luck.

By the way, do you remember the game between Washington Caps and Phoenix? Do you remember the goal Ovechkin scored lying on his back? Amazing, wasn't it? One of the greatest goals ever!

That was one of the best goals I've ever seen, no question. That shows what a great offensive mind Ovechkin has. I'm going to enjoy watching this guy play.

I hope he's right about Malkin. I don't know if he'll quite overshadow Crosby, but I think he will be a great player. Maybe those two will pick up where the Mario/Jagr combo left off (aka the last time the Penguins didn't suck).

I think these three players will dominate the league for a long time.

The Washington Caps seem to start the season unsuccessfully. Damn, it's a pity... Ovechkin has scored just 3 goals. Nevertheless, another Alexander – Semin – has already scored 8 goals. I'm very glad, as he is Russian.

Russian club seeks to stop Penguins rookie sensation from playing.

A Russian hockey club filed an antitrust lawsuit Thursday against the NHL and the Pittsburgh Penguins, saying prized rookie Evgeni Malkin shouldn't be allowed to play in the league because he remains under contract in his native country. Metallurg Magnitogorsk, which filed the lawsuit Thursday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, also demanded unspecified damages from the NHL and the Penguins over Malkin's deal to jump teams this summer.

"We haven't seen a copy of the complaint yet so it would be inappropriate to comment," said NHL spokesman Frank Brown. Penguins spokesman Tom McMillan said the team hadn't received the lawsuit and doesn't comment on litigation.

The 20-year-old Malkin left the Russian Super League team during August's training camp in Helsinki, slipping quietly into the United States to begin his NHL career. In his debut Wednesday night, Malkin scored his team's lone goal in a 2-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

Malkin was under contract for another year in Russia. The NHL had previously said the league believes any player should have the right to choose where he wants to play as long as he is legally free to do so.

After Malkin left his Russian team, he cited a Russian labour law that permits an employee to leave a job by giving two weeks notice.

The lawsuit, filed after a Russian arbitration panel ruled that Malkin is still under contract to Magnitogorsk, said the signing of Malkin to an NHL contract was a "blatant and deliberate tampering and interference" with the Russian team's existing agreement.

In the lawsuit, the team said the Penguins knew or should have known that Malkin was under contract to a Russian team when they signed him. The lawsuit said the NHL and the Penguins violated antitrust laws by conspiring in a group boycott and refusing to deal with Russian hockey clubs regarding player transfers.

Malkin and Magnitogorsk signed a one-year contract on Aug. 7, calling for Malkin to receive US$3.45 million, according to the lawsuit, which is more than the entry-level salary he'll draw this year in the NHL.

It said the contract was negotiated and signed in the presence of Malkin's Russian agent and his parents, and provided favourable terms allowing him to become a free agent a year sooner than an earlier contract.

Malkin, the No. 2 pick in the 2005 NHL draft, missed the early part of the NHL season after dislocating a shoulder in his first pre-season game.

The lawsuit said the NHL and its clubs have "decided to play hardball" with Russian hockey clubs to punish them for the Russian Ice Hockey Federation's rejection of a new general agreement governing the transfer of foreign players to the NHL.

It said the NHL told its clubs on Aug. 2 that they were free to sign NHL contracts with Russian hockey players already under contract with Russian hockey clubs if the players secured releases according to Russian labour law.

Earlier this week lawsuit was also filed on behalf of Russian club Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. The lawsuit claimed that Andrei Taratukhin of the Calgary Flames and Alexei Mikhnov of the Edmonton Oilers are under contract with Yaroslavl for the 2006-07 season and should not be allowed to play for any other club in the world. It asked the U.S. federal court for a temporary injunction barring the two players from skating for the two NHL teams.

I'm really liking everything that I've seen from Malkin so far. His goal against the Devils last night was Mario-esque. He has a goal in every NHL game he's played so far, so I definitely think he's something special.

He's overshadowing Crosby right now, but Sid is still playing great and hasn't really gotten hot yet. I think Malkin has the potential to be the best player on the team though. Jordan Staal and Marc-Andre Fleury are showing why they were drafted so high as well. I like what I'm seeing from all the Penguins right now. I hope they can keep it up.

I don't know much about Russian labor laws, but it looks like to me that anyone can leave any job after giving a two-week notice. It doesn't look like the Russian team has a leg to stand on.

All other countries seem to be fine with their players going on to bigger and better things in the NHL, so I don't see why Russia wants to be treated differently.

I also get the impression that some shady measures were taken to get Malkin to agree to that Russian contract. I read somewhere that some intimidation was used in a bizarre late night negotiation.

Yeah, I've watched the highlights of the game. The goal Malkin scored was splendid. I also liked the goal Malkin and Crosby scored together. They are an amazing duet! Moreover, Sergei Gonchar plays in the team. So you have all chances to return to the playoffs. I'm also gonna enjoy watching them playing. I wish the Penguins good luck.

By the way, do you know that Malkin has become the first rookie for the last 11 years who scored goals in all his first three games for his team?



You know, the story ﾂ'Malkin vs. Metallurg' is really very complicated. I haven't come to any conclusion yet. Let's wait and see, though... I'm not sure that Metallurg will leave Malkin alone. In the Russian Championship, Metallurg plays very bad now. It takes just the 10 th place. Malkin, to all appearances, was ﾂ'the whole show' in the team.

Honestly, I'm very glad that Malkin went to the NHL, because I want him to take part in the World Ice-Hockey Championship in Moscow in spring. I think that one's ice-hockey talent can become 100 per cent apparent only in the NHL. I hope that Malkin and the Russian Ice-Hockey Federation won't quarrel with each other. If they do, Malkin is highly unlikely to take part in the World Championship.

I'm glad that young players go to the NHL. On the other hand, I'm glad that many experienced players go back to Russia in spite of the NHL teams' wanting them to stay in the NHL. In my home city ice-hockey team Severstal Cherepovets, there plays Andrey Kovalenko. Once he played in the NHL. Perhaps, you've heard of him. His NHL nickname was ﾂ'The Russian Tank.'

Do you attend all the Penguins' home games? I dream of attending at least one game of the Caps or the Penguins.

By the way, are you going to Moscow in spring?

I wish I could attend some Penguins games or go to the Moscow games. I've only seen three or four NHL games in my life. I used to watch them on TV a lot, but now they're not on much anymore.

I wish ESPN would start airing them more often. I'd like to see Crosby and Malkin in action.

...I didn't know that there are problems with TV broadcast of the ice-hockey games in the United States. In my city, local TV companies carry TV broadcasts of all home games of Severstal Cherepovets. Moreover, one can listen to live commentaries of all guest games of Severstal Cherepovets in the Internet sport radio.

Is it possible to watch, for example, the Penguins playing in the net?

I tried to listen to live commentary of a Penguins game in some Internet sport radio. But, to tell the truth, I'm not very good at understanding the American English accent (ﾂ'cause I watch only BBC. As for, e.g., CNN, I don't have it. ). Besides, the sports reporter was going as fast as AK-47 fired! So I missed most of the ﾂ'story.'

I'm not sure about which teams have the most money. I know the Pens are pretty poor, compared to some.

Mario Lemieux is selling his part of the team. The higher ups in the team want a new arena, but they may have to leave Pittsburgh if they don't start getting more revenue from the fans, which they should considering the great talent they have. They may have to re-locate to another city with a higher interest in hockey or the new owner may just want to move the team. It's hard to say what will happen.

You can watch hockey games online on Yahoo, but I've never done it. I may have to check it out.

The Pens lost last night but they put up a good fight against a pretty tough team. I loved when Crosby took up for his teammate and went after the guy that put a dirty hit on him. That kid is something special.

In late October, a Finnish company finished building a new ice-hockey arena in the city I live in. I got the best ticket to the first game in the new arena. The game took place yesterday. I have to say that the new arena is great. Moreover, we won the rival team by 5-3. :win:

Once I attended all home games of Severstal Cherepovets. Afterwards, I did not have enough free time to attend them. But now I am going to attend as many home games of the team as possible. And I also advise all true ice-hockey fans to attend as many games as possible to enjoy real ice-hockey atmosphere. It is soooooooooo cool!!! I think that watching games on TV is disrespect for ice-hockey.

Amazing game!!!

A charity match pitting former Soviet greats against former NHL players took centre stage at Red Square to mark the birth of Russian hockey.

The `Great Five' of Soviet hockey - Igor Larionov, Sergei Makarov and Vladimir Krutov and defencemen Vyacheslav Fetisov and Alexei Kasatonov - as well as other famous Soviet players faced Team World, led by legendary NHL coach Scotty Bowman.

The first ice hockey game played at Red Square honoured the 60th anniversary of the birth of Russian hockey, the 50th anniversary of the former Soviet Union's first hockey victory at the Olympics and the 25th anniversary of the creation of the famous KLM line in the 1980s.

"This is a historic event - to come to Moscow and play at Red Square," Bowman said. "And it's an honour to have all these great players play here at a time to honour the heritage of the Soviet and Russian ice hockey."

Team World included Paul Coffey, Thomas Sandstrom, Jari Kurri, Ron Dugueq, Doug Brown, and brothers Peter and Anton Stastny.

Viktor Tikhonov, who brought the `Great Five' together, coached the USSR-Russia team.

The game was played at the outdoor skating rink built at the square where military parades and political rallies dominated during the Soviet era. About 2,000 spectators cheered for the home side at two stands erected just a bit ahead of Lenin's Tomb.

"It was the first time the game was played at Red Square and we will remember it forever," Kasatonov said.

Larionov scored four goals, Fetisov, Kasatonov and Krutov had a goal apiece for Russia. Skriko Petri scored two goals for the Team World. Sandstrom, Kurri, Dugueq, Brown and the Stastny brothers also scored.

"It was just like in the old times," Larionov said.

Coffey, a four-time Stanley Cup winner, converted a penalty shot with two seconds left to secure a 10-10 draw. "Look around - Kremlin, Red Square, Spassky tower - what a nice scene," he said. "And we were a part of this great event."

I have watched this game. It was absolutely fabulous!!! Hideki Matsui Beast, have you watched it? Has anyone watched it? If the game was broadcasted in the US and Canada and you did not watch it, burn with shame! Was it? If it was not, necessarily watch it in the future, when it is broadcasted. Such games are masterpieces of ice hockey.

It is very nice to see the people, who were irreconcilable rivals (in terms of both sport and politics) in the past, being friends nowadays. I am very glad that they are friends now...

...Alex Ovechkin and Sid Crosby are dominating the League.

Alex is in the lead in scoring goals (22 goals). Sid is in the lead in scoring assists (already 36 (!) assists).

Evgeni Malkin is not so bad either: 16 goals and 16 assists. But Sid... how could he score so many assists? Yeah, I am really delighted with the duo Malkin-Crosby.

Crosby, Malkin and Ovechkin will be great for years to come. The Pens look like they have a decent shot at the playoffs and that makes me very happy.

The Pens' goalie Marc-Andre Fleury is also playing great. I have high hopes.

I think the Pens have a pretty good shot at playoff this year.
It's also a good news that they will be staying in Pittsburgh.
With the number of young talents that teams' got, if they can
keep the group together for another few years and when those
young players become more mature, it's going to be a new
dynasty in NHL.

Too bad Ovechkin is in a bad team. I think this really limits his
ability to score. Look at the number of his shots, it's well over
400! If you look at the league top snipers, they've got somewhere
around 250 to 300 shots. You know who Ovechkin reminds me of?
The Russian Rocket (Pavel Bure)! The way they skate, speed, puck
handling style are so similar. I tell you, one thing about the Russians is
that they sure know how to use their feet and once they take off with
that puck, you ain't gonna catch them.

The +/- stats simply means this:
If your team scores when you are on the ice, you get one +
If your team let in a goal when you are on the ice, you get one -
Even though Ovechkin has a point per game average, his team
let in too many goals(while he is on the ice), so that's why
he still ended up with minus stats.

As for the 07 World Championship, I can't wait to see Sid the kid
going head to head with Ovechkin! As much as I admire Russian
players' skating and puck handling skills, I still think Canadian boys
gonna kick some European(and American) *** in the tournament!!

Thank you very much for your explanation. I have one more question. If a player scores a goal, does he get a +? Or does he get it only when his comrades score and he's on the ice at that moment?

I don't know how much this figure can reflect a player's talents and abilities. It seems to me just figure for fun. You know, Americans are fond of inventing absolutely different and unnecessary figures. Surely it can say something. But not much, I fancy.

I agree with you. On the other hand if he hadn't played in the Caps, he would have never scored The Goal. In any case, his contract will run out in a year. I wonder if he will stay in the team or not. 50/50, I think. What I like about the NHL is that you never know what will happen with a team next year or in a year. I mean the NHL championship is very unpredictable. Almost any team can win it. This year you have a bad team, but next year you will have much better team which will be able to struggle for high results. At any rate, this is how I see it. The Russian Superleague is more predictable. You can be 100 per cent sure that certain teams will not become champions in the near future and will achieve high results neither in short run, nor in long run.

It was a really interesting article on Ovechkin, thanks for posting. So he started late in hockey but still made it to NHL by the age of 20…wow that's really amazing. I guess his parents were really persistent in raising him to become a successful athlete.

Everybody on the ice gets a + when your team scores including the goal scorer. I agree this stats doesn't really reflect a player's talents like stick handling or skating. However, it does tell you what "kind" of player he is. For example, you know the type of player who never comes back to help out the defense and just skate around the neutral zone waiting for an odd bounce or breakaway pass, those type of player tend to have a high minus even though they can be very talented individual hockey player. So are you saying the Russian Superleague doesn't have the +/- stats?

That's true, he does lack the toughness and seems to be more into the skating and stick-handling aspects of hockey. Is he famous in Russia compared to other players like Sergei Fedorov, Pavel Datsyuk, Sergei Samsonov, or Ovechkin? Do Russian hockey emphasize more on skating and stick-handling? I notice most Russian players are known for their speed and stick-handling. Of course there are some hardcore ones like Igor Larionov and Vladimir Konstantinov who can really throw hard checks.

Check out this video of Bure going on a breakaway, he is just so fast that the other had to trip him down.


Also, I once heard people saying when someone got checked from behind into the board, in Russia it's "board runs into you" not you got checked in the board. What exactly does it mean?? Does it mean in Russian hockey, it's your own fault you got nailed into the board from behind because you weren't paying attention? Or does it mean something else?

They did play one season together. Consider Mario's health problem and he was still able to put up amazing numbers, I really think he could've been so much more of a hockey player.

I think that a key to any success is passion. An inborn talent is very important, no doubt. But it is of secondary importance. Many great sportsmen would agree with me, e.g. Kostya Tszyu who said something similar in the past.

I'm not sure about the Caps, but in the Russian National Team Alex plays in the defence very well. For instance, very often he fall to the ice to stop a puck when a player of a rival team strikes.

It does, but to tell you the truth I have never noticed for someone to pay attention to such stats. As for me, I always try to assess a player's playing as a whole. That is, I try to determine whether the team gets good mileage from his playing, if you take my meaning.

For example, being guided by my observations, I can assert that the best player in the Russian National Team is Evgeni Malkin.

By the way, when asked 'Who is the best player in the National Team?', Alex Ovechkin always says, 'Of course, Malkin!' I also respect Alex for his being a modest, pleasant, responsive, and merry guy in his daily lives. (What he says about Malkin is not a joke, he really thinks so. ) I have never noticed that he has a star fever.

Many players are famous in Russia. It is impossible to mention all of them.

I remember an amazing game in Nagano between Russia and Finland. Russia won it by 5-0. And Pavel scored all 5 goals! He was the first player in the history of Winter Olympics to score 5 goals in a single game. It's so pity that he was forced to end his hockey career because of a knee injury. He would have still impressed us with his amazing playing...

Sorry again. I don't understand the point completely. Leastways, I have never heard about 'a board running into you'. I am sure that Russian referees view such moments like referees in the NHL.

Several corrections of my previous posts.

First, Malkin never played for Russia in the World Junior Championships.

Second, Ovechkin and Crosby didn't meet in the final games of the World Junior Championships. Russia beat Canada in the final game in 2003. Ovechkin played in that game, but Crosby did not. Sid began playing for Canada in the World Junior Championships since 2004.

There were three more final games between Russia and Canada in the World Junior Championships since then. Ovechkin didn't take part in them.

2005. Russia lost by 1-6.

2006. Russia lost by 0-5.

2007. Russia lost by 2-4.

What a shame! To lose a final game is very sad. But to be beaten by Canadians is the worst thing in the world!

Third, in fact Wahsington Capitals' money is the tightest in the leaugue. I thought they were the richest club... I was wrong.


...Although Malkin scored just 19 points during 2005 and 2006 World Championships and 2006 Winter Olympics (2005 WC: G-0, A-4; 2006 WC: G-3, A-6; 2006 Oly: G-2, A-4) I think that he is the best player in the National Team. He does so much work (in defence, forwards, etc) that the team greatly benefits from his playing.

Alex Ovechkin is very good as well. Stats for comparison:

2005 WC: G-5, A-3.

2006 WC: G-6, A-3.

2006 Oly: G-5, A-0.

Well, the Penguins are out but I've still been enjoying following the playoffs. I just wish they'd show more of them on a channel that I actually get. I'd like to see the Rangers take it now. I still love to watch Jagr play.

Sens won last night. I hate the Sens.. NJ was putting the pressure on I wish they'd scored. That one goal Brodeur let in was weak I reckon if he'd saved that NJ would have won. I'm from Toronto, we have an ongoing blood-rivalry with Ottawa. >:|
