Chinese warship to make port call in Japan for first time since WWII

TOKYO (AP) -- A Chinese navy warship will make a port call in Japan later this month for the first time since World War II, as part of a bilateral defense exchange, defense officials said.

Shenzhen, a missile destroyer, will make a four-day visit to Tokyo's Harumi wharf from Nov. 28, becoming the first Chinese warship in Japan since World War II, Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Friday.

"Promoting mutual understanding and trust in defense with China would not only benefit our country but also contribute to regional peace and stability," Ishiba told reporters.

Defense ministers from the two countries in August agreed on reciprocal port calls by their navy vessels, with a Chinese warship visiting Japan first, as relations have improved vastly over the past year.

But Japanese officials have expressed concerns about China's surging military spending in recent years, calling for more transparency.

I think it's a very good thing that Japan and China has become closer in the recent years, and it's a great step.... even though I would rather like to see the Media to be more positive about the two countries their relationships because I think they rather want to show the negative stuff than the positive stuff.

There is a hotline between Washington & Beijing,both sides can honestly discuss serious critical military matters concerning both nations and the world.
