ehrm.. well, pretty boys are good, and fragile... I don´t know about fragile. It depends on the meaning of this word - I mean, I don´t want a total lost-looking nerd, just skin and bones (guess that could be fragile too...)
But I´m all into thin boys, with NO BULKY MUSCLES!! I really dont like these muscular men, (brad Pitt-scary...)

Many people have tried to explain why Shonen-ai and YAOI is so popular in Japan, I mean - THOUSANDS of women read these mangas everyday.
Some say it has to do with some kind of "sex-fright", where young japanese women are soo shy and feel so uncomfortable about the sex issue, they don´t want to picture themselves in a situation where they would have to be alone with a man. Therefore, these boy x boy mangas are a "safe" way of getting into these sorts of things without having to feel guilty about anything - I mean, with YAOI, you´re (as a woman) just becoming a passive beholder. You get to see attractive men, but they´re together with eachother, not with some girl which you feel you would be forced to compete with.

hmmm.. i agree with most of what you have said. i am a straight male, and i have read some interesting YAOI, but i think its a female curiosity issue, and of course, the artwork. there is a common mis-conception about japanese girls being "shy" though. maybe towards other japanese? im caucasian, and when visiting the west coast, i was approuched by numerous japanese girls in the san-fran area, and in seatle and new york as well. i was told by more than one that japanese girls these days are in fact not shy, and very out-going when it comes to caucasian men. this made me think, why? my friend yuri said that its because of a social stigma of habition in japanese society towards each-other. but when it came to foreign men (particularly american and european caucasians), that japanese women were more un-inhibited when it came to sex and sexual situations. facinating i thought,
at whitch point? the language barrriar is of course a big one, but i speak conversational japanese, and had no problem making friends, and getting a date was no prob. hmmmmm..... thats good because i like japanese girls

I don't think it's got nothing to do with pretty illustration or so. You can find prettiness in *almost* all the anime.

I know I don't really like it , I find it so gross. However , I do admit that I , ahem , enjoy it .

To me , pretty boys are usually the ones who draw after girls. Infact , perhaps girls were created to be pretty , and boys were created to be hairy and ugly. So this way , a boy who is closer to being a girl is acually closer to prettiness !

I wonder what do guys feel about shounen ai. I know I would not enjoy shoujo-ai in a million years ..


Even of all the pleasure it might carry to us girls , I tend not to support shounen ai that much. It would have been OK if it was like of a series or a comic specifically dedicated to shounen ai . But I hate the anime slashing kinda shounen ai. Usually the slashes are between best friends , teachers/students , and brothers . I think it ruins the true means of relationships and blinds us off the story.......

Plus I am a complete fan of boys "go-getter" girls. If boys started loving each other , then what's left for us girls ?!!!
AHHHHH!!! speaking of shounen-ai. There is this new anime airing , just watched an episode last week late night. And it's fully and all about shounen ai that I have seen NOT ONE GIRL during the whole episode !!!

Mm, you might be right. (ABout the shyness of the japanese women...) The japanese have a special way of acting towards eachother, and act differently when the socialize with americans/europeans)

I personally LOVE these slashings, where "normal" anime all of a sudden show shonen-ai potential - between, as you said, brothers, best friends and Teacher/Student When shonen-ai is put where you least expect it, it get sooooo good. guys usually get very disturbed of shounen ai. but i find that shojo ai are pretty cute, as long as its not like hardcore yuri.

I do not think you completely understood me. "Slashing" is the kinda anime related shounen-ai which exists only in the fans' minds. It is the stuff you find in doujinshis and fanfics and stuff , like those of Prince of Tennis for Slam Dunk for example. It does not exist in the anime , as this anime is "yaoi-free". That's why it's called slashing , as I believe.

As for the anime you are talking about , of where they are best friends but then suddenly turn out to be lovers , or so I understood. Then I have not any experience at watching such an anime ,
recommend any names ??

I meant the usual manga and anime that only includes "hints" and really tiny elements of shonen-ai. It usually happens a lot in many different manga - only the characters never turn out to be gay or lovers, you can only "hint" it. And ofcourse, many series are full of bishonen, boys who look like girls almost. Sometimes, I think it´s hard to know if a certain character is a boy or a girl.

maybe, but I'm not really into hardcore. But it depends a lot on the artist, I'm very choosy when it comes to the visual - I like it to be all beautifully drawn and pretty.

Sometimes, I can't read a manga just because it looks ugly, even if the story would be the best in the world.
