This belongs to someone in the States that I know and he'd be most grateful of any help of what it is and what it may say. It does look more Chinese then Japanese though.

You'd have to ask somebody who knows about those things.

If it were mine, I'd try to get somebody to fabricate a new insert for the bottom and use it as a lamp.

It would be pretty easy, I think, for someone to make a nice base for it to sit on and maybe have some kind of LED lamp going up inside it. That way the cord wouldn't be noticeable. Cord placement would be a problem if it were made into a hanging lamp.

It may also have been a hanging incense burner, and would make a very cool one again if it just had the missing insert.
