Lovecraft never elaborated on this, to my knowledge. In the story, various cults worship Cthulhu as some kind of deity, but nothing about Cthulhu's divinity was ever elaborated on by Lovecraft (that I know of).

Except that he's been alive for millions of years, sleeping at the bottom of the sea, waiting for the stars to be right?

Why would an omnipotent god be so insecure that he needs me to grovel before him? I never did get that part of Christianity.

Why does he say he gives us free will, then from the other side of his (supposedly his, anyway) mouth say that we must submit to his will?

Oh, I guess we have a choice: submit, or go to hell. If someone puts a gun to your head and tells you to do something, it's not an act of free will if you do it.

Hi everyone I'm new and i just been skimming through this thread. Roland, In lds religion (commonly called mormon), which IS christianity, it is a beleif there is not just a heaven or hell. There are four places your spirit can be sent. Without going into too much detail, the first is where God resides, it is paradise.THis is where you want to end up. The second is for people who were not bad people but did not necessarily follow the commandments and were not baptized or anything like that. It is much like earth and Jesus can visit the people there. The third is for people who did not do good while on earth. Th holy spirit can still visit there, though. THe last is for very wicked people who knew of the greatness and love of God but rejected it and did very bad things.
This is a very general layout, and I'm sure i didnt say everything perfect, just wanted to give everyone a general over view. If you have more questions you can ask.

It's not only important to know our religion but also to know how we deal with the religion.

I was raised Catholic, and we were taught there are four places you could go after death:

1. Heaven -- for good people who have accepted Jesus as their savior.

2. Limbo -- for good people who were never baptized or never had the chance to accept Jesus.

3. Purgatory -- a place like hell, but only temporary punishment, for those Christians who committed sins in their lives. Most Christians will go here. When your sentence is served, you'll be admitted to heaven.

4. Hell -- for evil non-believers.

Looking at the wiki article it seems that Mohammad combined Limbo and Purgatory as one in the same with some alterations. Limbo and Purgatory are, after all, from Christian mythology and not all christian denomination accept Purgatory.

In christian myth Limbo is reserved for those who haven't been baptised or people who were born before Jesus's birth or those who who have never heard of christianity. Here you will find unbaptised babies, people and heathens. Everyone born before the time of Jesus went into limbo, including all the OT prophets.

According to catholic theology when Jesus died and ascended to heaven he went through limbo, gathering all those worthy ie: the OT prophets, Adam and Eve, etc. as he then went through hell, through purgatory and finally up to heaven. Those that the church deemed good heathens have their own special place within limbo, but are forever denied entry to heaven. It is here that Dantes hero in The Divine Comedy meets his guide, Virgil (deemed a good heathen by the church, along with Julius Caesar), who takes him all the way to heavens gate where he promptly disappears back to limbo.

Recently the catholic church has issued a decree that unbaptised children no longer reside in limbo, but ascend to heaven. It was finally deemed cruel to parents whose children had died before being baptised.

Purgatory is needed in the catholic theology because of original sin, which the reformists abolished as being non-christian. Because of Eve eating the apple all humans are born with the taint of sin on their souls. As people with sin are not allowed to enter heaven the church needed a place to put them before they entered heaven. Here people who have accepted Jesus and all the BS along with it go to have the sin beaten out of them as a form of penance. Once it has gone you can then ascend into heaven. Praying to saints helps reduce the time souls spend in purgatory as the saints can intercede with God to reduced the sentance.

I suggest you read The Divine Comedy. It is a piece of Satire, but it gives you an insight into the mindset of the Catholic church, especially in the medieval period (which it is still in, in a lot of things:eek:) And you wonder why I'm an atheist.

A few centuries ago, the Catholic church was still selling "dispensations," time off from the sentence to Purgatory. Give the church a bunch of money, and you'd get years off your sentence.

When I was a kid, you could still get time off of Purgatory by saying certain prayers. Say one set of prayers, and you'd get 150 days off. Another set of prayers would be worth 270 days off.

I said tons and tons of those prayers when I was a kid, so I'm not worried about dying anymore.

I was raised Baptist, then around the age of 10 or 11, I began to realize a was being fed lies, I was agnostic for a while, and an atheist, then I decided that neither of them really completely fit my views. I then came to understand that religion is pointless and unnecessary, The stories may be entertaining, and sometimes there my be good morals, but problems occur when people take those stories to seriously.

I don't deny the possibility of the existence of a god or gods, however I don't personally believe that any gods exist. I also believe in the off chance that there is a god or gods, they are probably evil.

as Epicurus said

"Is god willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is god able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is god both able, and willing?
Then whence cometh evil.
Is god neither able nor willing?
Then why call him god?"

This introduces the problem of evil to religion, showing that even in the small chance that any gods exist, they are probably evil or apathetic.

WHy should we be punished for ours sins? That is why Jesus suffered for our sins and died and was ressurrected- so we would not have to suffer. Instead, we can repent, be baptized, and be saved.

That sounds like the Protestant Christian belief. I was talking about the Catholic faith, which believes that Jesus' sacrifice only erased Original Sin (the sin of Adam and Eve in disobeying God, which the rest of us somehow inherited.

I can't answer your question because I'm not really a Christian anymore. I can't make any more sense of Christian tenants than I can of Islam's or other religions'.

Then try LDS. Mormonism, if you will. I'm telling you, its not all confusing and warped and garbled like other ones.

:D:D:D:D
Not at all confusing and garbled, not.
Also this is not a place to try and convert people to your own brand of silly superstition. Any peaching will be dealt with.
"You should try something" Is not preaching. I thought this was a thread discussing religion, not to diss other ones. Please be nice. And no, it is not garbled. Try and find a contradiction in lds beleifs, go on.

A discussion involves exploring the facts. A suggestion is not a point made as to a fact.

The term "You should try Mormonism" is trying to push your particular brand of woo, and will be treated as such.

Oh no did the nasty, horrible atheist make you cwy? Discuss, not push, which you were doing. I was also not dissing your religion. All religion is full of woo and baseless assertions. You don't like this fact then go away.
Another point is that this thread is two merged threads and is not for discussing your brand of woo.

The idea of this thread is ONLY to post your religion and why your subscribe to it. It is not a thread for saying why yours should be the correct one, or for discussing scripture and how true it is. It is not for flaming or insulting others beliefs. It is not for proselytizing, preaching or trying to convert anyone. Anyone doing so will have their post deleted and infraction points given. If they continue further action will be taken.

And no, it is not garbled. Try and find a contradiction in lds beliefs, go on.
Do you seriously want me to do this? Okay.
We will start with the bible, which is full of contradictions
Skeptic's Annotated Bible / Quran / Book of Mormon
They also do the Skeptics annotated Book of Mormon:
SABoM
Which rather show that old Joe hadn't done much history when making his woo up.
Then there is revalations 22:18-19
KJV said:
18For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

19And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
The book of Mormon is clearly an add on by a historically illerate conman. Sorry, I remembered, the Mormons have a completely different history for Joe rather than the truth. Bit like Scientologists with LRH.

Then there is DNA evidence that clearly shows that the native Americans are in no way related to the Hebrews as claimed by the LDS from LeHi and his sons.
No evidence at all for the Jaredite people in central america. not even a single scrap of writting. The language and history of the Native Americans shows no evidence of any contact with the middle east. They cannot decide on whether it was Moroni or Nephi who visited him. The Mormon church has suffered several schims over its short history.
This is just for starters. Do you really want me to start on the magic underwear, Gods is really a hyper intelligent alien, the rather racist idea of why black people are black and having planets when we die?
If you really want to continue then open a thread on it. This is not the thread for doing so.

it's nice to be nice
am i right ?

If a man has a neutral view, it is surely the truth will inevitably
Racist view to another religion or another nation would surely strayed
At least will ruin the relationship with others, making them mistrusted by

I am a Muslim

I have read books of other religions and compares them with Islam
Because I want access to the truth

The surprise is the book of the Bible there is indication of the existence of the name of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him
But if you look at the translation of the word from Hebrew into English as bible is originally written in Hebrew, they did not translate the word that shows the name of the Prophet Muhammad they simply put another word.

every one has the right to know what it is written in his holy book, either if they are muslim or christian or any religion they believe, they have full right to know, translation surely is not enogh

Regardless of everything, each one should respect the other, even if they are different in color, language or even the Religion
