All around Sports talk

Yeah, but remember all the **** between Owens and Dallas? I can't believe that they would bring him in! What about Brees in NO? What will happen with that No2 draft pick now??? What if NO pick up Owens? I doubt they would spend the money, but stranger things have happened...but he wants to go to a team with at least a possiblility of winning!

Edit: I just read up on Brees deal (6 years $60 million) and it looks like he definitely went after the money...knowing that he'll never see the playoffs! I have to wonder if he is 100%...maybe he knows he's hurt, and was just taking the paycheck!

TO possibly going to Dallas reminds me of when Roger Clemens went to the Yankees. He hit Jeter with a pitch when Clemens was with the Blue Jays. Joe Torre called him a "headhunter" or something to that effect. Then they welcomed him with open arms after he was traded to them.

Quite right, HMB! Eagles fans hated T.O. because he was such a showboat, but when he put on the midnight green, he was beloved like no other Birds player save for the late Reggie White, at least for one season. Dallas fans aren't going to care about what happened in the past, and almost all of the players from back then are gone, so that won't be a big deal either. All fans and players will care about is if T.O. can help the Cowboys win.

Wow! A player going to where the money was instead of a team that can win a championship! What a concept! HA! Well, that was what Edgerrin James did just a few days ago when he signed with the Cards, so it's hardly no surprise that Brees followed suit, but I think New Orleans goofed up by giving that much cash to a QB coming off recent shoulder surgery with no way of knowing when he'll play. Miami took the same risk with Culpepper.

True, but with the way the NFL's contracts are structured, if Brees/Culpepper don't do anything, they can always cut them and not have to worry about the money. NO has the fortune of a decent draft pick, so if they want, they can draft a QB, sit him a year while they evaluate Brees, and possibly trade Brees or their pick. If Brees sucks, cut him and start the rookie. Miami has more tools than NO right now, along with a better coach, so it's not surprising they're willing to take a chance on the guy who threw for the most yards 2 years ago. Give the guy some weapons (Chambers, McMichael, Brown, Williams) and he should be ok. He sucked it up in Minny last year because they didn't have an offense.

A buddy of mine is a big Dallas fan. He basically said TO will be welcome as long as he keeps his mouth shut and plays...we'll see how that works out. He also jokingly said he should apologize to the star on the 50. I wonder how Roy Williams will react to TO's presence.

NCAA tourney time, who's picking who ? Personally I would like to Illinois win, but I've got to go with the heavies like Duke or UConn.

NO will have to trade that pick now...they can't afford to sign a top rookie QB after giving Brees that much money...not to mention that the owner is a tightwad anyway. I'm surprised he gave that much to Brees...probably only to sell tickets!

Hmm, I think Duke will take it all. JJ Reddick is awesome. But I can actually see Boston College taking it.

It's sweet, they are holding some games in Salt Lake City, but they are all sold out. The only team from Utah is Utah State University. But I don't think they will make it far.

Matt Leinhart or Vince Young would've made for a major draw in New Orleans instead of Drew Brees whom I doubt will sell much in the way of tickets, and no one even knows when he'll play.

As for the NCAA's, Duke's two man show (Redick and Williams) can't keep up their pace forever. If the Devils make it to the sweet sixteen, I'll be surprised, meanwhile, Boston College was lucky to survive their first game. While I'd love to see Villanova win it all (they're from the Philly area), it's impossible to ignore UConn which is ten deep and talented as hell. Look for the Huskies to be the last team standing.

hmm, I don't know about the Huskies. I think they will lose in the next round. But when March Madness comes, anything is possible. How about Gonzaga, and the player of the year Adam Morrison. I see, first round, second pick for him in his future. Of course it will be redick with the first round, first pick.

Anway, I think Boston College has a great shot still. Overtime was a little bit of an eye opener for them. Villinova. that would be pretty awesome!

Gonzaga?? AARRGGHHHH!!! Talk about an overrated team, playing in a slop conference where there's no one to challenge them. I see them as being an upset special, if not this weekend, then certainly next weekend. As for Freddie Prinze Jr., er, Adam Morrison, I see him as being a better future NBA player (he'll be chosen in the first five picks easy) because of his size and toughness than Redick (no way in hell he'll be the overall first pick), if but for no other reason than Duke players never make any real impact in the pros.

Hmm, I think redick would at least get in the top five. It's funny though, my friend got Morrisons autograph. He was so excited. He wishes he would have gotten two, and sold the other one on ebay. lol

Yeah UConn just looks too good. They're reminiscent of UNC last year.

Reddick won't be chosen that high, especially if a number of underclassmen come out. He struggles getting his own shot even at the collegiate level, isn't a good defender, and doesn't have great handles. Morrison is a much more well-rounded player, though perhaps more of a scorer than a shooter. I don't even think Reddick is the first person from his own team picked. Sheldon Williams is a solid defender/rebounder who can score a bit and will hustle. He could be as effective as Emeka, though I don't think he'll be getting as many shots.

I have to call you on the "Duke players never make any real impact in the pros" line Flashjeff. What about Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Luol Deng, Carlos Boozer, Grant Hill...I know the recent crops of Chris Duhons and Mike Dunleaveys have been disappointing, but Duke CAN create impact players. I just don't like their program.

Here's a question for any Detroit Lions fans: who would you rather have starting, Josh McCown or John Kitna?

Did anyone hear about the young autistic boy that played in his highschool basketball team. His first game ever, played in the last minutes. He scored 20 points in 4 min. That's just awesome. Tears of joy for me.

Yeah, I heard he was the team manager and they stuck him in at the end of a blowout. Pretty crazy. 6 threes and a deuce in 4 minutes. Not too shabby.

And that's not counting the inevitable crop of high schoolers who bypass college and go into the draft. If Reddick's picked in the first round at all, I'll be surprised. You're right, Reddick does have trouble getting his shot off, and he's streaky as hell to boot. When he's on, he's unstoppable, but when he's not, he can't throw the ball in the ocean from the beach. Also, at 6-4, getting his shot will be all the harder at the pro level against taller NBA players guarding him, and his defense isn't all that impressive either. Like Allen Iverson, Reddick is too short for a shooting guard and has not much in the way of skills at the point. Reddick will at best, have only an average career in the pros. Sheldon Williams will have a better and longer career than Reddick will.

Okay, let's rap about them. Brand started off rocky and has just established himself with the Clippers, Maggette is only decent, Deng is just a rookie, Boozer hasn't evolved into a superstar and threw away a chance to play with LeBron, Hill might have had a HOF career, but injuries short circuited him. Along with stiifs like Duhon, Dunleavy, Hurley and Wojohowski (did I spell that right?) who everyone raved about but never got so much as a sniff of an NBA camp, hardly a stellar list.

Hmm! Let's see! Flotsam or Jetsam? Hell of a choice. Lions fans will be in trouble in 2006!

I guess it is all but final that TO will indeed be in Dallas. I've seen many reports on the net that suggest that is where he is going, but still waiting for the official announcement!

Yeah! For Eagles fans, our worst nightmare is about to come true. Never mind that crap about how hell hath no fury like a scorned woman, that's small potatoes to the wrath of a pissed off pro athlete out for payback against his former team. I'm guessing T.O.'s already marked his calendar for that first meeting with the Birds. Oy vey! Already I know this gonna be painful!

Actually, with the new age limit, no high schoolers will be entering the L unless they happen to be 20.

Brand has been at or around 20-10 his whole career. That's an impact player. Just because he happened to be on two of the worst teams in recent history (post-MJ Bulls and the Clippers of almost any era) doesn't mean he hasn't proven himself as a legitimate number 1 threat on any team in the NBA. He's also the best PF in the league this year, a great rebounder on both ends and an underrated defender. Maggette is as solid a #3/maybe #2 option on any team and is regularly around 20 pts/game. If those aren't impact players, I don't know what is. But maybe I'm just a Clippers apologist. Then again, I don't think Daniel Ewing is anything special.

Boozer, when healthy, has shown he can score and rebound. He screwed over the Cavs, but if he can get back in shape, he'll be a great contributor to the Jazz and have a good career as a 2nd round pick. I think Deng came out of school too early, but he's shown he can be a contributor in the NBA, and as far as Duhon/Dunleavey...well...

Well, Brand has finally put it all together and has become a darn good player. But while he's been a 20-10 man, i saw those numbers as hollow because he didn't help his team win, otherwise he might still be with the Bulls. Wow! A Clippers apologist! I never thought I'd even meet a Clippers fan, never mind an apologist! Live long enough and you'll encounter just about everything! HA!
:D

Who would win one-on-one? Kobe or James? I watched some of the Laker-Cavalier game, and it was fun to watch. Personally, I think that Kobe would win, but James wouldn't be too far off.

Since neither player is what I'd call a "stopper," I'll just focus on what I see as their offensive capabilities.

Kobe:
Better at making tough shots, particularly while fading or drifting
Able to make quick moves off the dribble, able to slink through defenses
More acrobatic finisher around the basket, but tends to lay the ball up too much
Larger repetoire of moves, particularly after picking up dribble
Finds a way to get shot up in traffic
Better ball-handler, especially in traffic
Able to deal with physical defenders (Artest, Bowen)

James:
Stronger physically
Explosive off the dribble, but has some diffculty in changing direction at full speed
Stronger finisher (dunks if it's remotely possible), better vertical/horizontal leaping
Takes contact while driving easily
Leaned back shooting style makes it difficult to challenge shot

I think it'd really be dependent on who's having a better shooting day. Both guys have become really willing to settle for outside shots, especially in one-on-one situations. I'd expect James to take Kobe into the post and use his size and strength to get high percentage shots while Kobe would face up from 17 feet or so and make Lebron decide to guard the drive or the shot. I think Lebron would get better shots, but Kobe's a better competitor and better in clutch situations (despite his track record).
