I can. A Norwegian is a person, a Swede is a type of vegetable and a Finn can be found on fish and planes ;-)

In real life, there are lot's of clues like clothes, hairstyle, facial expression, behaviour, etc. But, on these pictures it's much harder to tell (as I suspect they were all living in a Western country when the pics were taken)

the point is to know whether you can tell the difference based "race", in which means, if they grew up in the similar eviroment, will they look different?
hairstyle,clothes, behaviour only assign to specific generation/location, e.g a midde age chinese who have experienced culture revolution will surely look different from a japanese born at same time. however, if it is a japanese descendant in china, then it will still look different from the Japanese outside china. also, based on the cloth and other factor, u can't predict their children are gonna look different. so using amercan asians (I suppose) is a much better choice if u want to tell whether u can tell the difference between them.

I got 11. I find that this sample isn't really representative/typical though. Are these Asian living in America or in a Western country ? If they were born abroad and don't even speak the language of their original country, then the chances are they've lost their characteristics. I noticed that I could tell remarkably clearly that Asians or Africans born and raised in the UK were actually from the UK, just by the look in their eyes. It works best for male from South Asian (Indian-Pakistani), Arabic or Adrican origin.

Hey Maciamo, did I miss something? How do you know these people live in a western country? As far as I could tell, by their hair styles, their clothing, they could all be living in Japan. Most of them could be Japanese in fact.

In my opinion (which will buy you a cup of coffee in most restaurants if you throw in a $1 bill), there are a wide range of facial types in all Asian ethnic groups--probably all ethnic groups in the world--but my experience is mainly in Asia.

In 1980, I was in a remote village in the northern part of Swat State in Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province and I saw this bearded old man who was about 4 ft tall--a dwarf--but when i saw his face he looked so much like my own father it was shocking.

In the Philippines, a lot of Filipinos have the "typical" Filipinos facial features, but there are so many others who are pure Filipino (as far as they know) who could easily pass for Thai or Japanese or Chinese or Indonesian or Malaysian or most any East-Southeast Asian ethnic group.

Personally, the longer I have lived in Asia, the less significance I can put on any kind of "typical" facial features as far as identifying a person's ethnic group.

Anyway, I think western stereotypes of what Japanese people look like comes a lot from their pop culture. Japanese usually go more for the cute look, so many of their pop stars are "cute." Since we've seen more of the Japanese who look this way, we assume that all Japanese must look this way. Whereas for Chinese pop, a lot of the stars are pretty old, so they assume that all Chinese people have harsher features.

Chinese stars are old? Huh? How many Chinese stars do you know to make that generalization?

The Japanese fashion is influencing the fashion of most Asian countries in particular East Asian countries. There are Japanese department stores selling their fashion in many East Asian countries. I know in Taiwan and Singapore, the Japanese department stores are particularly successful, so you don't need to be living in Japan to have those kinds of hairstyle or clothes.:haihai:

Umm may I ask, are you Italian or Portuguese descendant?

In the Philippines there are Sino Pilipino, those are probably the ones that look Japanese to you because the Pilipino people look like Thai or Malay to me, which is very different from Japanese's appearances. Otherwise they could be mix, and the results vary.

When I was studying in Sydney my landlord was a Pilipino family, their daughters one was light while the other was very dark. One time they went for haircut and kept on asking people whether they looked Japanese, but their friends all said no. I didn't think so too. And I still don't.

By the way I only got 9 in this test, I am much better to tell the East Asians apart in real life though.

My score was 8 out of 18 and I'm Japanese myself. I was mostly guessing but sometimes I could tell the person was not Japanese by the make-ups, hair-do, and the fashion. If the pictures have only faces with a same hat that covers the hair, my score would be worse.

I got 4 points (hopeless) on the report card!

I think they purposefully have shown people with mixed features. I think maybe 4 of them you could quess easly, others could be either Japanese, Korean or Chinese.

I think same goest with white people, I'm originaly from Poland, but most think I'm from Germany because I'm dark blond to brown...and have strong facial features.
