Politics Japan and Trump 2.0

It's been a few weeks since I read this comment, but with reference to trump's on-again off again tarrifs (canada & mexico), it's like he's playing chicken with them.

Probably from a Canadian, the comment was, "Don't play chicken with a country full of geese."

(if you've ever dealt with an angry goose, you'll know...!)


My university had a campus with a large population of Canadian geese. I know. Also, my former sister-in-law was a softly spoken Canadian woman with a core of steel. You mess with Canadians at your peril.
 
One oddity to me is that trump, et. al, think that companies previously exporting the the US will somehow move there (en masse?), and do so quickly. Some lightweight businesses may be able to do that in a couple years or so, but not heavy industry like car companies, steel/aluminum producers, and not the highest tech stuff like chip manufacturers--these industries need stability (long term stability), and that's almost the antithesis of trump. He has a horribly simplistic notion of what constitutes an 'american' car.
I think that's something nobody really understands. Japan must be one of the biggest exporters of cars and America their biggest customer so it would make sense to have their assembly lines in the US (I assume they must do to an extent) but it will initially cost them more to do so than paying the tariffs. They're probably thinking they should 'ride the storm' and wait until The Orange Man and his policies are gone.
Trump is mercurial, has the attention span of a potato, and in his first two months has demonstrated how on-again off-again his tariffs are. Who knows if this most recent 'plan' will last a week, three months, or a year? The only thing he has introduced is chaos and uncertainty. Why would any company take a change on that? They were apparently throwing darts about what the tariffs would be up to right before the announcement. And then seem to have used chatGPT to have made a 'plan'.
I heard it suggested that he's using these tarries as a transactional bargaining tool; he'll reduce them when he get what he wants.
Let this chaos continue for a few months, let the economy continue to crumble, let people see prices go up and their retirement account wither.
Yes, but that's a cruel strategy for those people who are already struggling financially.

Have Obama/Biden et al., stuck their heads above the parapets and made any comments?
Let the R's see their polls numbers fall, and get a glimpse of the control of congress changing hands. And if not then, then when those election results sink in, Trump should then be impeached--again.
I think we need to follow Tokugawa Ieyasu 's strategy rather than Oda Nobunaga 's and 'wait and see'…

Separately, and sort of addressing what you say, you can't argue with or attack trump on any rational/policy basis, he'll have moved on. He's not going for rationality--he's going for eyeballs (like tiktok). He's going for celebrity/popularity.

This is like high school or junior high--why is the popular one (or few/group) popular? Their popularity is not rational, you can't take them down by arguing or pointing out things rationally/intelligently/logically. They control a kind of inexplicable 'popularity wokeness', such that almost whatever they do, it continues to feed that.

And separately separatelty, trump has proven that there's no deep state, either within or surrounding government, pulling the strings of power. If there were, I would sure hope that it would have hopped in by now, to rescue us from all this.

Your mistake is in thinking that Trump actually cares about any of that. He doesn't care about policy. He only cares about his own power and popularity. The on again off again tariffs that change day by day is evidence that they don't have a logical, rational, well thought out plan. We have a global, integrated economy now. Nothing he does will overcome the fact that the monthly wage for workers in countries like India and Bangladesh are less than the daily wage of an American worker. The only way we will build Tonka trucks here again is if it's a fully automated process such that there won't be any American workers anyway.

As for patriotic feelings, what evidence do you have that Trump has ever exhibited any patriotic feelings? Is it the fact that he denigrated John McCain's service by saying he couldn't be war hero because he got captured? Or the endless string of disparaging comments he's made about those who served and died for our country? Or was his patriotism demonstrated when he had a doctor fabricate a diagnosis of bone spurs to avoid service in Vietnam? Maybe you can explain how any veteran especially a Vietnam veteran could support this guy.
 
So you agree that:

  • it's ok to remove non-discrimination protections against LGBTQ+ in health care
  • it's ok to encourage discrimination against transgender, Muslims and other minorities
Speaking as a guy who has zero tolerance for any of those, yes!

As for illegal immigrants, yes, I support any kind of targeting and deporting, because they are committing a crime by being in our country and living here without permission. They are taking our jobs, and our space. If their family were illegal immigrants and they are born here, they are US citizens, so that's a different story. It doesn't matter if they don't commit any crimes (such as robbery, arson, etc) they are committing a crime simply by setting foot in our country illegally. I said most, I don't know everything about politics because i'm not an old guy (no offense) that sits around watching NBC and 60 minutes all day. I just know what I know and what I pick up from the news at my grandparents house. I'm not the only one who thinks trump is a good president. Read This article, and you'll see that I'm not alone. You may want to examine your identity as a Christian and somebody who says the above. They are not compatible. Hopefully by the time you're old enough to actually vote you'll wake up.
 
I wonder how bringing back hands on difficult work type factories & businesses will work out. It seems the younger generation wants to only work with their computers and preferably from home. Also will union workers start demanding $65 an hour or more for manual labor jobs?
 
If you follow the Border Patrol page and many law enforcement pages on Facebook , the amount of illegals that are caught that are dangerous criminals or on world wide terrorist list or convicted pedophiles is amazingly high. I can only imagine the ones that aren't caught and now live among us. These are the ones ICE really wants ; but if you start breaking laws as an illegal and just beg for attention like cheering for HAMAS , you also get grabbed up. I know , I know , they have rights you say. NOPE , not a legal US citizen or green card holder you have no protected rights here in most cases.

I don't doubt your pastor behaves that way. Obviously you didn't get your beliefs in a vacuum. You're surrounded by it. Only "Christians" (not Christians) feel it's ok to shun people who are not "normal." And, yes, it is biblically wrong to agree with immoral laws. How about all the other bullet points I listed? You agree with all those too? You said you agree with most of Trumps actions.

The Constitution applies to everybody not just citizens.
The Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments guarantee that no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law. This means undocumented immigrants have the right to fair legal proceedings before deportation or other actions. So it's troubling when the current administration thinks the constitution is optional.

What I find most troubling is that, regardless of who happens to be president at any given time, Congress has legislated away a lot of their authority to the executive. That inherently weakens the whole system of checks and balances that was originally intended.

you're describing a combination of selective sampling and confirmation bias. Of course a page that is dedicated to "border security" is going to post a bunch of cases of scary looking criminals flooding the border, and ignore the innocent men and women and children fleeing violence and persecution, and seeking asylum in our country--the very "shining beacon on a hill" we claim to be.

This is precisely what I mean when I talk about media diet, the content you are saturated with (and to self-select to some extent) present a deliberately-crafted world view to influence your political leanings, so you don't focus on the mistakes and injustices, but on the rationale of a system that dehumanizes and victimizes everyone caught within it. You're told these are bad people who deserve what is happening to them, so you can sleep at night thinking you are safer BECAUSE of this system.

There are ALREADY American citizens foreigners with legal status being harassed, arrested, and even renditioned to foreign black sites in countries they've never been to. All they need to deafen your empathy response is to label them as something less sympathetic "illegals" "gang members" or "terrorists" or whatever, even if they are no such thing. Despite the administration's efforts to deny due process, this is well-documented and the administration has already admitted to several of these cases, but have doubled down by declaring that the courts have no authority to correct these mistakes.

How would you feel if your child was caught in a tuna net and when you appeal to Starkist to let them go they say "it's regrettable that your child was swept up in our nets, but now it's too late, they're going in the can and there's nothing you can do about it."

Due process is the entire foundation of our concept of a fair legal system, and that extends to all people, in order to avoid the mistakes we are witnessing in real time. The current administration is completely side-stepping the processes required by international and our own laws, with predictable results, and that leaves everyone vulnerable to injustice, including you.

No, we have very clear teachings about LGBTQ. The Old Testament actually says put those people to death, so shunning them now is NOTHING compared to what it used to be. So yes, I rather agree with trump. But enough about that stuff. You cannot convince me otherwise on this issue, it wont work. So I suggest you don't try it.

About illegal immigrants.


The Bible encourages treating foreigners with compassion and justice, but also emphasizes the importance of respecting established laws and authorities. The Bible says this about obeying laws

And, it's not immoral to kick someone out of the country if they aren't supposed to be there. International law recognizes the right of states to control their borders and to expel foreigners. Yes, there are limitations, but we have the right to kick them out. Yes, Trump is ignoring parts of it, but in the grand scheme of things, we have the right to kick them out.
 

If the US continues to treat allies no different or even worse than rivals, then you can expect to see more of these types of agreements.
