According to Yomiuri Shimbun, the first, second, fourth and fifth biggest stories in Japan this year are all related to sport and games. Yeah, right! The fact that our climate is unravelling, threatening our ability to feed ourselves, comes in at a lowly ninth.

The Yomiuri seems to have an unhealthy obsession with sport. I remember in March 2020, while most of the world was locking down, it still had a countdown of the number of days to the start of the (later delayed) 2020 Olympics on the front page!

I don't really understand it. I never followed any sport or team regularly. I don't know who is making the final rounds of the World Cup, World Series, or Super Bowl until the hype reaches the front page.

Neither do I. However, given the bad news we are bombarded with daily, I can very well understand why some focus on the lighter side of things.
