Tech Yahoo Japan to merge services with LINE, ditch Google

According to Nikkei, Yahoo Japan is considering having another company provide its search engine technology, currently supplied by a Google affiliate. Z Holdings, Yahoo Japan's owner, has announced plans to bring Yahoo and LINE under its umbrella in October and launch a new company called LINE Yahoo. LINE Yahoo's major shareholder will be Naver, a South Korean Internet service provider with more than 60% share in that country's search market.

Naver is working to develop search technology incorporating generative artificial intelligence, aiming to export it to Japan and other countries where LINE is popular. Industry watchers will be waiting to see whether Yahoo Japan switches its search engine provider to Naver to improve its management efficiency and make more effective use of technical resources within the group. According to Z Holdings ' financial statements, Yahoo has been under contract with Google Asia Pacific since July 2010. The contract stipulates the nonexclusive provision of search technology for Yahoo's search engine service and search-linked advertisement distribution technology. Under the terms of the agreement, Yahoo Japan is allowed to freely develop and incorporate additional functions to differentiate its search results from those of competitors.

Google is awful.

There are probably literally millions of people that could design a search engine that actually works well, which Google doesn't. The trouble is, as with so much, the marketing....because far too many people can't even see that Google has been broken for years......cause few will even look at page 2 of their search results.

And that said, my experience might actually be better, because by not having an account and deleting all my cookies, I actually don't even give them information to try and cater to my little biases.

It's not the search technology, it's the monetization that's the key and what makes them so successful.

There is a strong link between the monetization you mention and the marketing I mentioned.

Google used to be good, but it was broken by greed.

And could be broken and keep chugging along because most people are awfully dim, near-sighted, and or too weak willed to reject BS.

Hard to reject BS when said BS is provided for "free." All you have to do is give them your digital soul in return.

Google has done so much more though, like streetview invading privacy, making themselves unremovable from Android phones, and providing cloud services useful for work and business but are of course, data mines.

I have tried like hell to eliminate Google from everything I have, but it cannot be done. For example I got an app for my phone from a company that was not Google which contained a global map, only to find they were just patching in to Google maps to cover that bit for them.

Well, I hope more companies will avoid tech monopolies where they can.

One of the things that annoyed me the most is how dominated RSS readers with google reader then killed google reader. This had a big effect on blogs and forums moving more people to the more ephemeral and hard to search walled gardens of social media.
