Yes! That's why I don't participate there anymore. The only reason I did today, was because a friend of mine joined.

Its not that difficult to scroll down the page.
When I first read this I thought 'hahah yeah...', but really, its nice to welcome newbies. It encourages them to post more.
Good on Smurf for posting for the rest of us, that dont do that anymore. Someone has to do it.

There's nothing in particular wrong with Smurf. Nor is there anything in particular wrong with greeting new people to the forums. It's very neighborly. The problem comes when someone goes through and in rapid succession catches up on a backlog of new members they haven't welcomed yet.

I Think It's Nice As A New Person On The Forum To Be Welcomed !
This was the first Forum I had anything to do with and I sure appreciated people being nice to me. As far as I'm concerned, young & old, J-Rockers or history/language/culture buffs should all be treated politely and with patience and understanding. I do tend to hate Japan bashers who seem to hate Japan for past history events and would like them to go to Forums for people who dislike Japan, BUT I keep my mouth shut and allow them their freedom of speech & thought. Sure, there are young people here on the Forum who can grate on the nerves a little, but that's life everywhere. I try to understand where they are coming from and treat them with respect; I feel better knowing what's on younger people's minds and know they are the world's future. The reason I spend so much of my time here is this Forum seems so special and almost always leaves me feeling good. The owners and admin work REAL hard to make this Forum interesting and peaceful. It would be easy after being here for a while to feel dominant and be a mean P***k to new people or younger members; I think it's a sign of patience and maturity to sit on your hands and avoid the nasty comments, why spread hate & discontent ? I don't know, maybe trying to be nice is a dying art in the modern world?

I'm sorry you guys. I honestly didn't know that it bothered anybody. The reason I post like that is because I don't log onto the forums on the weekdays much. When I log on I see all these new people who have joined over the week so I say hello to them. I'll stop if it really bothers you that much.

Dont be silly, like I said earlier, its not hard to scroll down.
It makes it easier for other nice 'welcoming' people like yourself to do likewise, if they too havent been on the computer during the week.

I don't mean to pick on Smurf by any means. Nor do I mean to say that people should not be welcomed. But looking at the time stamps on the posts, I have to wonder if there was time to actually read the self-introduction of each new member who got welcomed. If not, it is the online equivalent of the perfunctory, spiritless "Irasshaimase" that we wonder why the clerks in stores say without even bothering to look up to see who it is who has entered.

Reconsider your question in light of the fact that I'm doing the equivalent of the clerk ignoring someone completely by not participating in the new members' introduction forum. I'd rather be ignored than have a greeting from an automaton. So, yes, that would be perfectly acceptable to me.

Why do you find it so necessary to go to the trouble of broadcasting that you do not so wish?
This is not the behaviour of someone who wants to ignore, and wants to be ignored completely ... it is the total reverse.... a quest for recognition.

In the futile hope that people who dash through backlogs of new member introductions at breakneck speeds indicating they very likely didn't even take the time to read the threads would slow down and actually take the time to interact with the OP on those threads in a more human, less automaton-like way. And perhaps avoid those irritating lists of new posts such as appear in the image I posted.

This is tough. On the one hand, it is very nice and neighborly to say hi to all the new people. On the other, if we all did that (thank you mikecash for tasting the "dark side" 
), the forum would become deluged with hello messages and it would be hard to pick out the non-hello threads after a while. There must be some kind of balance somewhere... :?
