Why do Muslim women wear veils?

about link: i think use Niqab or No actually is a private choice,It is not needed.

Whole my life i have just seen 3 or 4 woman who wear it in my country.(over 95% are Muslim in Iran....)

I think this photo makes a nonsense of the idea that the burkha de-sexualises a woman, which I think we can agree is the point of it. The way that woman is standing, and the way the fabric clings goes some way to negating the fact that she's completely veiled. Not to the extent of a page three photo obviously, but she's still "womanly", right?

What i know about Hijab is to cover your sexy areas in the body not to cover your whole body like a tank !
Prophet Muhammed's wife "Aisha" went to cyrcle Kaba and when she get close to the men she cover her face ( not all the face ) but i didn't read that she covered her whole body !
That Black fashion has been made lately, and it started from Kuwait,Qatar,Bahrain,UAE,Oman, Saudi Arabia in the eatsern region where the Bedouins live.

This is the Egyptian Hijab :

Most Muslims women wear it expecting in AlJazeera countries ( Saudi,Yemen,Kuwait,Qatar,Bahrain,UAE,Oman ).
it's the common Hijab for the last 13 centuries.

why don't they customize a swimmingpools for women !
Women can swim freely then !

Why? Swimming pools in the UK are unisex and I see no problems. My health club has a pool and asian women use that with no problem along with asian men. I suspect most of them are more likely to be hindu or sikh rather than muslim.

i mean instead of making a special swimsuit like Derfel's link "burqini" they should rather make a women section of course for Muslims.
I can't swim while some women staring at me 😌

Hopefuly in Iran there are many swimming pools for women that women can use them freely,Also in Caspian see(north of Iran)there are some part of Land(Beach & sea)that is covered and just women are allowed to enter that part,So in Iran women are quite free & Relax about it,in that part women wear Bikini or any other thing that women wear in other part of word.
Isn't any thing similar it in Arab countries??? :?
Also plz look at photoes ,that is Persian Hijab.

Staring at women at the pool is part of the western experience. It comes free with the whole package. :D Some places may tolerate it overtly and sometimes you will have to do it covertly, but there's a fair chance that if you spend enough time in the west visiting places where people go to swim, some lecherous old man will make an inappropriate remark as regards the 'variety' and expect you to laugh at his joke.

Wearing veils is considered to be necessary for Muslim women, but it's caused by two things historically, mistranslation and desert culture.

Quran tells women to protect themselves from the harmful eyes and instructs them to cover their women parts with long dresses and their neck with khimar. The terms used in ancient Quran, "khimar" is a scarf-like accessory that was used to protect people's eyes from sandstorms in Arabia. In time, as Islam scattered around the globe, khimar was translated as "veil" and by some scholars was said to be necessary, forgetting the actual purpose of the accessory. And after that, with the Islamic culture failing to improve their effectiveness on the globe and not accomplishing the requirements of the new age, Islamic Countries went into a dark age, while Europe was living its Enlightment Age. Feudal lords and dictators started to use religion as a power more than before, leading to todays religious Iran-like countries. And veils, "accidentally" become a subject of pressure for women, prohibiting their freedom.

Silly me,i couldn't find out this part !
I just knew the differences between "Khimar" and "Niqab" and "Hijab" =_=
Thank you very much.

seriously how come i forgot the differences ☝ ...

What i'm saying is, it started with khimar as a accessory to cover their neck and deteriorated to today's black Hijabs. It's not a thing that happened in a couple of years, i'm talking about hundred years of change. And i can't say its an advancement. Old Muslims were good at everything, philosophy, maths, physics, medicine. but with the deterioration of religious ethics in Islamic culture, they lost their power, and instead of trying to rebuild it, they encouraged it, so even a simple accessory for protection from nature became a requirement for being a muslim. All they had in mind was to not lose their connection to ancestors, but instead they became their ancestors at all aspects, even with the changing era.

Yes,that's why i said so 😌

I really think no-one has a problem with the hijab, just the covering of the face. The hijab reveals the whole face and humans like to see a face to be able to talk and socialise with people. Someone with a covered face is less likely to be spoken to. We need to see all the face to be able to read emotions, to tell if someone is lying or telling the truth. A covered face becomes suspicious and untrustworthy, as if the person has something to hide. What would you prefer, to talk to anyone without a mask or with one?

This isn't objectionable:

Your point is understandable,I my self faced problems talking to women that covered the whole face,i didn't know where to look at :D so i just speak like if i was speaking to my self Lol.
at least show us your eyes :?

the ignorance caused alot of probelms.

I have no quarrels with this kind of veil. The problem I have is with the abuse of the women who do not adhere to it, and the overall abuse of women in certain countries. People can wear whatever they want, they should have the choice.

However, as I've said before, in certain countries in the Middle-East, women are mutilated, tortured, and murdered for not adhering to Hijab, so how much of it is choice in those countries?

Hezam, let's say you were married and moved to the USA. Would you force your wife to wear a veil?

The main reason I go to the beach or swimming pools in the first place is to look at the women. (I am limited to discreet glances, or else will face the wrath of She-who-must-be-obeyed.) What would be the fun in it if women were separated from the men?

One of the American stereotypes is that Muslim women must wear veils because Muslim men are so lacking in morals and self-control that they cannot restrain themselves if their passions are inflamed by the sight of a woman's face or skin. This stereotype (whether true or false) undoubtedly leads some non-Muslim women into being nervous about being in the company of Muslim men.

What is this crap? I've never heard of any sort of stereotype, nor do I think Muslim men have repressed sexual urges. In fact, isn't it quite the opposite? Muslim men offer a girl a ride, rape her, she reports it, and she gets 100 lashes and a year in jail for accepting a ride from unrelated men.

So, I wouldn't particularly say that Muslim men are at all repressed. Of course not all Muslim men are like this, that would be a stereotype, but this is the sort of thing that occur in some Arabic countries. This is the abuse of women that occurs for not adhering to Hijab.

So, while in my opinion, Muslim women may wear a veil if they want in the USA, not doing so in some Arabic countries sorta gets you blinded, mutilated, thrown in jail, flogged, or murdered. So, let me ask this: Should the enforcement of Hijab be eliminated so that Muslim women do not have to fear these repercussions?

Don't go babbling at me unless you've actually read and understood what I posted. Just because you haven't heard of something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

And where did I say that Muslim men are repressed? My post implies just the opposite.

Isn't this forum restricted to the literate?

Just because you haven't heard of something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
To make it simpler for you, that part of my message, being "What is this crap? I've never heard of any sort of stereotype", was expressing disappointment towards the fact that some Americans probably thought like that.
And where did I say that Muslim men are repressed?
Well, I never implied that you said Muslim men were repressed. I was responding to that example of how some Americans might stereotype Arabic people & culture.
Isn't this forum restricted to the literate?
Well, aren't you just a rude little bugger? That was uncalled for.

Can i ask you what planet are you talking about ? I live in Saudi Arabia and if the people here see a non-veiled woman they advise her and try to make her wear a veil,of course in a polite way.!
And you have to know that Arab-Muslim women are proud of the veil, you forgot that part.

Hezam, let's say you were married and moved to the USA. Would you force your wife to wear a veil?
this is a good question,
18 years ago my uncles moved to the US without their families But my father and us moved to Saudi Arabia because of the culture shock.
To me,As Yemeni Muslim,i wouldn't let my wife take her veil off...And i wouldn't marry a non-veiled woman.

The main reason I go to the beach or swimming pools in the first place is to look at the women
Lol,you still are Adolescent :D

It's nothing than rumer :)

1- This is in Afghanistan not in Arab countries.
2- This is an anglo-American media so never believe them,it's bull$hit.
3- Women schools are better than men schools in Arab countries.
4- All my sisters studied and they go to school like queeens.
Should the enforcement of Hijab be eliminated so that Muslim women do not have to fear these repercussions?
No,And Hijab is one of woman pride.

Please let's avoid the bickering....

I'm certain the "people" who would "advise" a non-veiled woman to wear a veil wouldn't stop at no.
And you have to know that Arab-Muslim women are proud of the veil, you forgot that part.
I'm pretty certain there are quite a large number of Muslim women who do not want to wear a veil too.
To me,As Yemeni Muslim,i wouldn't let my wife take her veil off...And i wouldn't marry a non-veiled woman.
Could you explain your reasons for not wanting to marry a non-veiled woman? Also, please tell me what you would do if your wife did take her veil off and defied you.
This is in Afghanistan not in Arab countries.
It unfortunately happens all over the Middle-East, Hezam.
This is an anglo-American media so never believe them,it's bull$hit.

Are you saying that video is a fake, Hezam? :?

No,And Hijab is one of woman pride.
How can women be proud of their bodies if they have to hide them? You know very well that I didn't mind veils as much as I do how their usage is enforced and the extremes that go into some of the varying styles of Hijab.

Yes,in some regions especially the middle region in Saudi Arabia and the north in Yemen.
I don't see any problem with wearing this Hijab :

the foreign people must wear that type not the one that covers the whole body,it's not a problem, right ?

Faustianideals said:

Sure but they must respect the majority, and this leads to another question :
Is it right to prevent women to wear Hijab in Europe ?
people in nature tend to morals so i think they don't have the right to prevent Hijab.
Preventing Hijab will lead to corruption and not the opposite.

Faustianideals said:

- Mostly non-veiled women could be attacked or harassed by bad guys.
- I can't stand seeing my wife/mother/sister/daughter un-veiled. (man feelings).
- It's shame here to marry non-veiled woman.

I know the middle-East and i assure you that nothing like that happen here, never.

The Gaz bomb has been thrown by Anonymous person and Taliban didn't admited it.
It's Media war,And this is absolutely unforgivable crime.<< gosh we are off topic :D

Did you forget that european women were covering their bodies excepting the face ? especially in England and France in the Noble families ?!!

I know and i agree,But what you should care about is treating the foreigners in the Arabic countries, they are not forced to cover the whole body+face ! it's simply like old european style :)

"people in nature tend to morals so i think they don't have the right to prevent Hijab.

You seem pretty adamant about the veil, Hezam. I respect your people's right to choose hijab as a matter of custom, but I have to ask a couple of questions:

1. Is there something special about your people that will lead them into corruption without the hijab?

2. Do you consider other cultures (e.g., Americans, Japanese) to be corrupt because their women don't wear a veil or head covering?

I don't see any problem with wearing this Hijab :

The Hinjab isn't the problem, it shows the face. The problem is the veil and the Burka, the covering of the face. There seems to be a confusion between the two. This thread is about the veil and the fact it covers the face.

Sure but they must respect the majority, and this leads to another question :
Is it right to prevent women to wear Hijab in Europe ?
They aren't prevented from wearing the hijab. France has banned the Burka and Spain want to follow this and many other countries within Europe. There was a case of girl who wanted to wear the hijab at school and prevented from doing so. The reason is that schools are supposed to be secular. In France they even prevent people from waering crosses.

people in nature tend to morals so i think they don't have the right to prevent Hijab.

Aagin, the hijab is not the problem, but the burka.

Preventing Hijab will lead to corruption and not the opposite.
How so? If we look at societies and general corruption we see that islamic countries do not do very well. The Saudi Government is a well known corrupt government. Most of the power of the country is held by only 7% of the population. They have one of the most heavily censored media in the world, ranking along North Korea. See list:

I call BS. Maybe in Saudi, but not in the UK or most of Europe. Myabe we should ask the female members of the forum.

I can't stand seeing my wife/mother/sister/daughter un-veiled. (man feelings).
Well that is a coment on your culture, which really needs to change. It is the 21st century, not the 15th.

- It's shame here to marry non-veiled woman.
That needs to change. No wonder women feel proud to wear the veil when there is pressure in society like that. They are progammed to like it, same way you are programmed to condone it. Not your fault. Those in charge use it to keep in power. I can assure you that the Saudi Royal family have different views on these subjects. Thye jsut don't let the poeple know, and when you control the media it is quite easy for the poeple not to know. That is why they censor the internet so much because the truth is on it.

As i said,I won't allow her to do so,If she refused then i choose to part with her.
She might not want to marry you for being such a person. A woman is equal to you in intelligence, not some inferior being, and in the UK she has that choice and can be very vocal about it.

Did you forget that european women were covering their bodies excepting the face ? especially in England and France in the Noble families ?!!
Yes, 200 years ago. We grew up.

I occasionaly do interpreting for foreigners in Turkey, and sometimes i come across guests from Saudi Arabia and İran, women come with their veils and hijabs, only to take them off 1 hour later. They drink and get drunk, go to beaches and live just like they want.. When i ask about them about this, their answer is always the same, "doing otherwise is not a good idea in our country" Especially people from Iran change the moment they arrive here, wearing weils or adhering to religious rules in Arab countries is mostly because of the fear of government. People are "made" to obey the rules, and in time they accept it, become used to it, and they start to think thats their own idea.. And there are almost no exceptions about it, people change and forget the rules of Islam as soon as they go into another country.. Because in deep down, they don't like it.. I'm not saying Islam is bad, "the Islam in many Arab countries" is bad.. Thats why they are closed societies, if they get in touch with people from other cultures, they see what they are doing wrong, and change, thats why Arabic countries try to keep foreigners away, fear of losing their power over people...
