I used to play piano, but I stopped during second year university. Wow, it was so long ago. I don't remember a thing! I need to take lessons if I want to pick it up again.

I currently play the bass guitar in a rock/metal band. I started playing the bass in college when the band I was playing the drums for (I started playing the drums in high school) lost its bassist/vocalist and I took over. I'm probably a better drummer than bassist, but I like that I can jump around the stage and play a bigger role in song writing as a bassist. I do miss how it feels to pound out a heavy beat on the drums though. I guess I'm a rhythm player as both the instruments I play are part of the rhythm section.

You need what's called a 'practice mute'. It attaches on top of the bridge and makes the violin very quiet.Chipi said:I used to play the violin, and a little bit piano. I can play Chopsticks on the piano!!! But then again, who can't...? I own an electric guitar, but haven't had money for guitar lessons. I'd like to try to learn acoustic first, anyway. I've been known to come up with some pretty cool riffs on mine, though! I just...have no idea how I did it. XD

I'm learning the piano and been playing it for a few years now. I'm still taking lessons now. It's going kind of slow since I can only practice about half and hour each day, except for weekdays due to University and work. But I'm working on it and I'm seeing pretty good improvements. Definetly one of the hardest (if not, the hardest) musical instruments to become great at and can't be done in just a few years, and I hope it pays off in some way. 
I have this really small hidden dream inside for me wanting to become a keyboardist in a band. ^^'

I've been playing guitar and bass for around 16 years. I currently play bass in two bands in LA, so i'm frequently playing shows. I can play drums and piano adequately, but nowhere near the level of guitar and bass.
I own a Fender p bass, fretless jazz bass, and a Fender Telecaster. Amp is an SWR Black Beauty. I'd like to get a synth for computer recording and to get better at piano

I'd like to learn to play the cello - the closest instrument in sound quality to the human voice. I like string instruments and the deep sound of a cello and you can do some cool things using the bow that you can't do on a guitar. Therapy? sometimes uses an electric cello on some of their albums and it kicks @$$. Don't know when I'd have to time to learn though.
i've been learning guitar for about 2 years now. I have been teaching myself with the aid of guitar tabs i print off the internet. It feels great being able to play a song you really really like!
I have 3 guitars : a Hohner les paul copy i got off my brother to mess about with . my epiphone les paul studio (that i love!!!) and an electo acoustic that i really like the sound of.

This is a very old thread, but I thought I'd pop it back up to the top for the benefit of the new members who didn't see it.
Well, I'm interested to know what instruments people play...
Apologies to anyone who is irritated by the popping up of old threads.
I suppose I'd better answer the question myself...
* Acoustic guitar (all my life, no lessons - taught by my Dad!)
* Electric guitar (10 years, no lessons)
* Flute (8 years, lessons, grade 8, up to age 18.... ehhh, there seems so many '8's there!)
* Voice (2 years, lessons, no lessons since age 21
)
* Keyboard (6 months, no lessons - I can't afford a proper piano unfortunately.)
I also took music theory to grade 5 - I had to, for flute, but when I started on the electric guitar I found it very useful and wished I'd paid more attention! It's also valuable for keyboard.
At the moment, on guitar I'm practicing the solo from Jealous (Dir en grey), Heartbreaker (Led Zeppelin) and Big Fat Money (Van Halen) as well as various odds and sods of exercises. The bass solo from Cage (Dir en grey) makes an excellent guitar warm-up, btw!
On keyboard I have learned 3 classical pieces - I have a book of 85, which should keep me going until at least retirement and beyond!
The latest was "Air on the G string".... 
I'm hoping to learn Regret (Malice Mizer) next!
So what instruments do you play, what are you practicing, and have you got any hints and tips to share?!?

Oh man, this thread was started almost before I was even born 'sokay, though, since I get to indulge myself talking about a good hobby.
I've been playing guitar for 6 years or so (learning for 2 years at the beginning until college came). That is, acoustic for 6 years, electric for maybe 5 years, and classical for a couple of years.
I'm pretty piss-poor at the guitar, especially with theory. I can't get notes on the spot, and I haven't gotten any of the modes yet. Also, I've probably forgotten all but the basic major, minor, M7, m7, and sus4 chords by now. Still, I'm proud to have tabbed a small handful of songs, like the acoustic versions of some L'arc en Ciel songs, the acoustic versions of Luna Sea's Millenium and Breathe, the acoustic version of X Japan's Amethyst (VERY disappointing for its easiness), some Gackt songs, and some others I forget.... Spattering of others. (PS- I... er... kind of lost most of those tabs.) Not to show off or anything, but I just enjoy being able to play a song that I've tabbed all by myself. It's very rewarding.
As you can tell, I prefer classical. I also have a bias for standard musical notation, as opposed to tabs, but I use whatever's available, which is usually tab. I'm trying to play my way from simpler songs up to some more complex pieces by Fernando Sor, and see how that goes. Of course, that's only in the Classical era (first decades of the nineteenth century), and I'd be interested in more Romantic stuff too.
I'm pretty much done with my steel string ever since I found my baby, the classical guitar. I haven't touched my electric in ages, although I'd like a nice new one that's good for jazz. Ooh, and an ESP, too. Those rock. Lastly (I know I'm greedy) I'm hoping to save up also for a flamenco.
I'd love to learn other instruments, of course: piano, violin, cello, some Chinese instruments.... Of course, these always require time and money, neither of which I have.

Cool, Lastmagi! Ehhh... I've forgotten a lot of the stuff I used to know, I had an enforced break for about 3 years due to illness. I used to know the modes but I forget now... I need to relearn.
I've only tabbed a few songs... I like it because it's good for practice. But I'm not very talented at it... I find it difficult to hear some chords clearly over the vocals especially if they are out of the ordinary and there is a lot of fuzz and ness.
Hmmm, I don't play classical on the guitar, I don't have a classical acoustic but a steel-strung (good for learning on because it really hardens your fingers!). The nearest I've come to learning a classicalish piece is Silver Swan by Stefan Grossman (do you know it?) I tend to start off all optimistic with the thought "if I can learn this, I can learn anything!", but when I have, I'm left knowing one difficult piece but otherwise no better....
When I'm reading from something I like to use a combination of tab and music ideally. Tab I just find good because there are so many different places to play the same note on the guitar, that "real" music takes me longer to figure out. But, you need the notation to get the rhythm and nuances, especially in something like Van Halen that has complicated timings and stuff. But on the internet it's usually only tab available (and that if you're lucky - the songs I like best seem only to have bass tab on the net

Do you know a program called Guitar Pro? It's a neat little music program that lets you make and view tabs with ease. It's got a playback function that lets you hear what you've got to get the timing right, a dual-tab-and-musical-notation viewer, support for instruments other than guitar, ability to import tabs from midi files (faulty last time I checked, though), tempo change feature if you want to slowdown to get the timing right, and a lot of other nifty interface features. I don't know how much it costs because I.... er... got it from a friend, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one given the chance. There's also a huge database of .gp4 files on mysongbook.com, so if you ever need help with tabs, that's always a possibility.
Unfortunately, I have a mac, so I can't use that program anymore
(on the plus side, there's one in the works due out around mid-2006... but I can't wait that long!!! )

just for a bit of fun, I attempted to record a coupla snippets, using my mp3 player which, while being a trusty bit of equipment, is, to say the least, not exactly the best in recording technology...
... Anyway, since I know you're all just dying for a good laugh, and I'm in a magnanimous mood today... me messing about on the guitar - complete with duff notes and appalling timing (seriously... I get carried away with the old triplety things... :38: ... I need a drummer, like, now)...

Cool, Philip! Piano is so difficult... I try and teach myself keyboard, and I wasn't doing too bad, but lately I needed to get a new adaptor, and I didn't bother to get it yet, so I become out of practice.
