I could write a thesis on this subject but, suffice it to say, I believe that our physical bodies or "shells", if you will, become nothing more than worm food or ashes if we are cremated. Like a snake sheds it's skin so does the soul when it leaves the physical plane and body. I believe the soul, or our "essence" is pure energy and just takes another form whatever that is and, since it is energy, it cannot be destroyed. It just takes another form in another dimension on another plane of existence.
Is this plane of existence, a heaven or hell as traditional religion teaches us? No, I seriously doubt it, but I do believe "we" continue in one form or another on whatever that plane or dimension may be and to date no one can say what it is or if it even exists.
If it doesn't exist and I am wrong in my beliefs, it will be nothing more than falling asleep and never awakening and I will never even know that I died or ceased to exist. However, based on much research and many studies done in the field of the afterlife and life after death with those who have claimed to "die" and have been resuscitated I cannot not believe that the soul does not continue on, but it is only a personal belief and nothing more as no one knows for sure regardless of what science or religion tells us. But, I would believe science over religion any day if I had to choose.

The physical body is what roots the soul or life force here into the 3rd dimension. Once it ceases to exist there is nothing keeping us here, like an ice cube melting into water vapor. So yes, it becomes worm food.
As a close family member of mine entered the later stages of death (cancer) they lost consciousness and just lay there. We had a reiki practitioner visiting at the time because it noticeably alleviated their suffering. As the family member advanced towards bodily death their energy began to exist at distances further and further away from the physical body. So that is, during normal practice the practitioners hands were held maybe 1cm from the body, but later on 2 or 3cm became necessary.
It's straight forward but anyone familiar with Reiki will know what I'm talking about.
The interesting question for me is kinda like this:
If our focus is grounded predominantly in the here and now, but exists elsewhere on levels and planes separate from the here and now, does their union after death create a really different form of consciousness compared to now?
For example sometimes when having a dream we 'feel' a certain way due to the circumstances of the dream. Fear, lust, confusion, anger, happiness, whatever, then upon waking we return to a more grounded 'clarity'.
So I wonder what kind of clarity and wholeness awaits on the other side?

If there is a heaven and hell, we're all likely heading to Hell for the terrible actions of our species. Can we get a count on how often we've failed this planet, ourselves, and our wards? Thankfully, it doesn't seem like there is either a heaven or hell, so we're all going to be burnt into a pile of ashes, rot away in the ground, or some other popular burial method.
I'm starting to understand more and more why a nothingness after this life doesn't seem so bad. Ceasing to be? A scary thought but it's comforting.

And that ye slay not the life which Allah hath made sacred, save in the course of justice. This He hath command you, in order that ye may discern. (151) And approach not the wealth of the orphan save with that which is better, till he reach maturity. Give full measure and full weight, in justice. We task not any soul beyond its scope. Where did we reside before we were born?? Did we just decide .....I'm bored hanging around here(whereever that was) , guess I'll get born today and join life on earth? Was this place where we were before we came to life on earth the same place we go back to when life ends??

I do believe that our soul and body with separate after death. During WWII I almost
died of a bad malaria attack. I had an extremely high fever. I had many malaria attacks but never before one like this. I could see myself laying on the matras and I heard voices saying that I was lost I couldn't make it. And then all of a sudden I do remember I was back into myself again. I know from my mother that I was given up that day, I was almost death. There is still so much that we just don't know.
Our DNA shows that we are built up from the most primitive creaters up to human beings. When and if we come back then we will not remember this life.

An interesting out of body experience, Elizabeth van Kampen. I don't like who I am as a person. There are some who supposedly like who I am, but the outstanding consensus I hold for myself is that I'd like to forgot myself, this life, go into nothingness, cease to be. Not remembering this life sounds so fantastic.
Don't take that the wrong way either. I love my family and yet I hate the majority of them. I deeply hate them and dealing with them frustrates me to no end. I wish them all well, but having my dear mom refer to me by her ex. husband's name, tell me she regrets the day I was born, that I am not even her offspring has left a bitter taste to this love, but I guess one cannot choose those they love, and when the night comes, you just have to accept when that love isn't reciprocated, no matter how much it hurts. No matter how much you know that you've done your best for them.
I hope I don't have an eternity to mull over this sad excuse of a life. I hope I can go into nonexistence or simply forget this life.

You wouldn't believe it today, but I was extremely and completely indifferent to everything that happened around me. This was after WWII and it took me a very long time to find myself back again. I have said many times to myself and sometimes to others that I wished that I had died during that war.
Leaving the Netherlands when I was just 21, starting to work and living in several different countries has saved me. No it was not easy! But feeling of freedom you get is overwhelming.

I think when I ''die'' I'll still have very rudimentary consciousness until every atom in my brain has completely seperated after I've decomposed. Starve someone of oxygen for 15mins they will be dead clinically but I think tiny undetectable processes will still occur in the brain.
People have been clinically dead for 6-7 minutes and bought back to life, they all report rudimentary consciousness and introspection. As for the soul business, we never truely die our atoms are just recycled and used for something else. We're all just atoms and star dust afterall. I could technically say I don't know...because I don't. However, I personally believe in reincarnation. I'm surprised that that isn't on the poll since it is quite a popular belief and there are many who don't believe in "heaven" or "hell" but still believe in afterlife.

you can tell by the things that surround you. Look at the things you might not normally look at, and see how it affects everything else. Be a scientist of the natural elements. Physical objects and foundation being earthly, conscious and being water, changes in things the wind, and the fire which is the will to seek and the willpower to continue living, darkness hiding things and consuming and the light of truth and hope.
Our emotions, feelings for others, nostalgia of anything we've never experienced, our abilities, our make-up, our persona, is that essence that composes us. When you take care of another, like a plant for instance, monitoring the winds and how they change, they will mostly help in telling you when enough water is enough or point to you that a storm is abrewing. The calamities we're faced with in our lives, in a way can teach us that we need to fix ourselves more-so. If this all exists, then a presence is likely there, especially when some people have these psychic powers I keep finding out about. It's all about connection which drives it all; just like people need love to survive. Love in itself, that's something that brings us closer to nature and provides us a means protecting our afterlife -the death of yourself or your memories - and saves everything you cherished and harmoniously secures safe haven with the others who were dear to you.
You just need to learn how to love more than just people, but realize that other animals too can carry these feelings as well. Even when just a a part of a plant is at the surface, weeping b/c the plant itself hasn't been taken good enough care of shows you understand them. I myself have memories of things I've never had in my lifetime and I've been able to experience things that can't be explained in our "real" world. The elements work hand in hand together and display traits that other elements have, and so people should work together as well and be nurturing and at peace.
If you start to notice these, it'll come to you, that there perhaps is a spiritual side to life. But as for me, since there are rainbows that come off of watery's reflective nature and it's mist form, that 7th heaven and the belief of seven being the part that presides over all the other 6, I believe that there's a heaven side, and hell separates us from the ill-willed kind that lost themselves to a malicious side. But I honestly can't say where we'd truly go. I know our shells we exist in right now, will be a part of the cycle of nature and be decomposed and feed other life as well so honestly I'd say all of the above, but I'll stick with don't know xD

I think the soul is the part of us that provides us a lifeforce allowing the spirit to exist and manipulate the body to the best of it's powers, and the spirit itself weakens as it stays in control of a body. A soul to me was crafted to be connected to a certain vessel and if we stay away from the vessel for too long, the soul eventually ceases xD
Honestly though, it's all up to how we dealt with the challenges in our lives that open up a certain place for us in the other dimension (perhaps the ether dimension) I myself struggle with my life, that's my weakness, but I won't give up!

I think that people's souls are put into suspended animation. Then one day they will be reawakened. On that day they will be judged. If they were good, then they will receive salvation. If not, then eternal damnation. That's what I believe.

- but well, i would like to share what i believe in afterlife and it depends on the type of death you go through...
- (not sure if it's mentioned in Taoism or Buddhism, just for the means of sharing...=), there are lots of different death that affect the outcome, quite complicated and beyond my understanding, so i'll just state a few simple ones...XD)
- Death caused by accident - one dies not due to fate/destiny, meaning an unexpected death (everyone has a certain lifespan upon birth, calculated based on an unknown formula that takes karma from past lives into account,dono bout the further details...lol). Upon death, the soul wanders around in Human Realm until the time when the lifespan is finished, unseen by humans except those wif special gifts (that's y some ppl see ghosts..XD).
- Natural Death - lifespan is up, time to leave the body, representatives from Nether Realm will come and fetch you, politely if one's a good person....XD.
- after the deaths above, the soul will be escorted to Nether Realm (Yin Realm), to be judged on the KPI when one's still alive, the good/ bad deeds affect the result that determines if one is to proceed with damnation in hell (Hell Path, Hungry Ghost Path), reincarnation (Animal Path, Human Path), elsewhere (Asura Path) or ascending to Heaven (Heaven/Deity Path).
