"Near" is relative.
Malaysia is south of China, but the entire length of Thailand lies between them.
The distance between Singapore and China is roughly 1200-1400 miles (2000-2200 km), depending on whether you measure it to Hainan Island (the part of China closest to Singapore) or straight north to the Chinese mainland.
That's about the same as the north-south width of the contiguous U.S. (what Americans like to call the "lower 48" states), or the distance from the U.S.-Mexico border to Honduras in Central America, so yes, it's pretty far on a local scale.
To be fair, I also often think of Singapore as close to China. I think it's because both countries are much closer to each other than either is to the U.S. (as you get farther from home, your sense of scale shrinks); because Asia is so huge, so the distance between the countries looks small in comparison; and also because China itself is huge, so Singapore doesn't look that far from it compared to China's own size. Oh, and maybe some blame falls on common map projections which tend to shrink distances near the equator.

Yeah. That last paragraph pretty much sums it all up. China is so HUGE that in a map Singapore and China look very close together.

So I'm from Romania as you can see my little flag, but not many know about Romania, just because is little.
Well I'm born here but my mom is half Greek and half German, and my dad is 99,99% Hungarian (the rest he doesn't know...funny!)
