What Do You Collect. What Collections Do You Have?

My collection constist mostly of any books i can lay my hands on and of digital media stored preciously in my PC, my treasure, movies, music, anime, a bit of manga, random pictures and of course i tend to collect thoughts, many many of them.

I have added a poll to keep the thread alive and make it easier to estimate which types of collection are the most popular among J-refians.

All the options I have voted for where childhood collections (until about 12 years old), which I don't do anymore except for metro cards which I started when coming to Tokyo.

I collect BOOKS both the paper kind and the digital kind. It all started with the earlier novels of Stephen King because they're the only stuff I could afford back then. I also have a good number from other authors as well. I have classics, detective-mystery-murder books, textbooks. Most of them I've read and to those I haven't, I hope I'd get to them someday...

I have a modest number of tapes and digital music of any kind - chants, love songs, rock, classical, jazz, meditation, anime - from any country and of any era.

I also have stamps, local coins/bills, quotables from movies or from any reading material, PIGurines, stones from various places (in the thoughts that a little creativity would transform 'em into a nice decoration).

My drawer is home to old payslips and old receipts (of any kind).

PS - None of this crap is valuble and I doubt I waould ever sell it, it's just a terrible compulsion to never part with anything. I think I need DR. Phil real bad!

I don't know but I go to Barnes and Noble and I see journal I like and buy.

I feel the same with books its like an obsession and I haven't even read those l bought before! I think I need to go to therapy like Uncle Frank!

I do refer to my books as 'my preciousss', in fact I don't let just let anyone borrow my collection - not even family.

:? Do you think that beign a packrat (read: obsession with collecting stuff most of which you don't actually use or might need in the near future) has something to do with the mental (phsycological) aspect of a person?

As a child I collected perfume bottles. I must have about 100. I lost interest in them when I was about 12, but I think they are still in the loft.

As a teenager I collected cinema tickets. I had every ticket from every film I saw until I got married. I think I stopped when I got a VCR!

Now I collect a few things. Books: history, science, literature. I think I have getting on for a thousand, although I'm not sad enough to count them!

DVD boxsets: Stargate SG1, X-Files, Millennium. I'm going to start on Star Trek next.

I collect Art Deco style stuff - it doesn't have to be genuine if it looks right. I have a china cabinet/writing desk, some pottery and a couple of pieces of jewellery.

I have collected frogs since I was about 12. The first I got was the kind you see at the sea side - a little smiling plastic dude sitting on a wire swing. I must have a couple of hundred frogs now - china, glass, plastic, jewellery etc, etc. Nowadays I only get unusual, quality frogs - like hand-blown glass. What I really, really want is a silver frog on a glass lilypad by John Ditchfield:

Simon collects Star Wars stuff. He has all the DVDs and books, some of the old toys and some of the new ones. Santa is bringing Episode 3! He also collects leather souvenir bookmarks. Everytime we visit a new place we spend the first half hour looking for a damn bookmark! He also seems to collect used jiffy bags, empty cardboard boxes and till receipts.

I have a clinical inablity to get rid of anything so I collect everything even if I don't wanna or am not even into whatever it. Be it old Movie/Theatre tickets, manga/anime, phone numbers (I never get rid of them unless keeping them will cause me problems), gum/cough drop/candy rapers, figuriens, CDs/DVDs, papers, books, toys, clothes that don't fit (or otherwise), old hair products, used up/new makeup, nail polish (empty or otherwise), dust (no kidding, I have enough dust in my room for it to be a collection of sorts), disposible cups, dead roses, candles (burnt out or otherwise), VHS labels, calenders, sticky notes, sharpies, batteries. You name it I've got it and in multipul stock no less.

PVC Statues
Stuffed Animals (laugh all you want)
Currency (I even have the last fifteen coins of Europe before it was unified with the EU and the Euro)
Pictures
Books
Cards (baseball and the like)
And God only knows what else I collect!

Hmm, well i have collected an awful lot of things over time, most of what i can collect is determined by the amount of space and cash i have available, but i generally collect these things(in no particular order, although some more than others of course);

a. Kimono and Obi and various other materials/textiles
b. Samurai swords
c. DVD's(wouldn't say i realy collect them intentionally, but i don't know what other term you'd give to a collection of around 400 dvds of various movies, documentorys and other stuff)
d. Fossils(mainly fish and ice age north sea stuff) and various archaeology(just things from England, mainly any era from the dark ages and before them)
e. Gemstones, anything rare or unusual really.

I used to collect coins and stamps when i was a kid, probably still have my old collections hanging around somwhere back at my mums place but havn't collected them for about 13yrs now.
Over the last 5 or so weeks i've been living at my new home so i now have the space to collect things again as i had to stop for a long period of time since my old appartment was too puny, but cash is low because of the move so it will still be a while before i can indulge in my hobbys- i'd like to start collecting sake cups and tea ceromony goods and maybe some wood block prints from the meiji era when the house is more organised as i still have alot of decorating and work to do :77: .

I feel a bit like the odd one out now - I don't collect anything.

I don't like accumulating stuff, and it actually irritates me when people give me things I don't want and can't use (my mom is the worst - she keeps arriving at my house with things that I left behind at her place 4 years ago and hoped never to see again! ).

Having said that, I do tend to acquire 'practical' things that I keep 'because they might come in useful' - y'know, stuff like nails, zips, paint brushes, prisms, perspectographs, empty jars, mdf board...

I do, however, have a 'collection' of small (about 1.25'' tall) metal figures that I've painted myself. I didn't consciously collect them, but painting them was one of my hobbies, and of course I kept them when finished. Luckily at that size, they don't take up much room!

Haha *has just read the poll properly* precious stones? If only! I'll get my super-rich boyfriend to help me augment my collection...

I've got a few back editions of comics, but again, not a conscious collection. It's just nice to browse through occasionally. I have to admit that the only possessions of mine that I'm 'attached' to (in the sense of actively not wanting to get rid of them) are my guitars (one electric, one acoustic) and my keyboard. Even my art stuff I wouldn't bother if it all went up in flames, because you can make art out of more or less anything if you've a mind to.

Well, there's all the anime I have, several thousand bucks worth on DVD's, taking up nearly five feet of space (along with all my movies) in my dining room, my manga collection, my comic book collection which has been growing since I was 13 or so, and my fairly sizeable collection of Pink Lady albums, tapes and memorabilia! Lots of good stuff all around!

I like those too. I only have two - Yuna and Tidus from FFX - but I suspect the collection may grow...

I collect tins full of ash. They are all mementos from various narrow escapes. At the moment I have 8.....

Actually (when I began to think about what do I collect in terms of having some kind of 'emotional' attachment usually associated with the practice of collecting), I can say that I collect songs, in fact! I have loads of CDs and yeah, I'd be pretty gutted if they all went up in flames.

You have to keep in mind though that a lot of the coins that my Father has have been purchased in the last three years. The best coins to collect are US coins because of the value in gold and silver that is placed on them. My Father has every single silver eage execpt maybe one or two. The most priced coins are Carson City coins, and I even got him one of those. He mostly collected uncerulated US currency, and even star notes. Star notes are extremely valueable even when they are cerculated because it is literally two currencies in one. He has a pretty nice coin collection, and you have to remember that size is not as great as quality. ;-)

Actually gold and silver here in the States is higher in value than in any other country right now. I think it has to do with President Clintion back in 1998(?) signing off a bill that allowed the US mints to make a certain amount of coins for collectors. The value of a $5 24kt gold coin is well over the $1500 in price range. Also all the silver coins are made with 99.9% pure silver bullion. The mint is not making so many coins anymore so the value has gone up even higher, plus the government has been trying to buy coins back to melt them down and make new ones. So if you lived in the States and are a coin collector, you are in the money my friend.

If I were you I would invest in both gold and silver as the value for both can lower one day, but triple in value the next. BTW do you guys have a star note program like we do here in the States? I am just curious that is all.

The UK Royal Mint doesn't have any 1oz gold coins for sale, so I can't match it to the IS 1oz Eagle...but it does have a 1/10 ounce, as does the US mint site.

I don't know what a star note is.

I've been debating if I should get the silver in coins or ingots.

Coins...I will get more please out of owning them...and can display them.
Ingots...Will be much easier to sell on when i'm older.

I think silver is cheap at the moment, and its price will increase more inthe years to come than gold will.
