What bands do you like outside the J-music scene??

I will agree with you that Metallica's newest album, St. Anger, is very disappointing, but not because their message changed. It's because as soon as they got rid of Jason Newstead, they lost their Metallica sound. Their music is very generic now. You used to be able to tell a Metallica song was coming on by like, the first three seconds.

And band's messages change because they mature, not because they sell out. Songs about rebelling against parents and authority are great when you're in school, but hopefully, the band's listeners will mature with them. Staind is a really good example. And if not, there's either a whole new group of people that they appeal to, or the band goes under. "Selling out" is the term a person uses to describe someone or something that has finally reached their goal doing something that person doesn't like.

::arghh:: This is what pisses me off. Just because something is simple does not mean it's trash. Flight Of The Bumblebee is a way more complicated piece than Chopsticks, but I'd much rather listen to someone play Chopsticks on the piano. If you don't care for something, say so. Don't bash it. There's plenty of people who do like it. I happen to love Monster Magnet's song Unbroken (Hotel Baby), from their new CD, but I also like Ozium, from their first CD.

Manson's musical style is metal/goth. It may be mainstream, but that's still his style. Dir en grey is mainstream, but I don't see them singing next to Utada Hikaru. My point? Something doesn't suck if it's mainstream, and doesn't sound like it was produced in a garage. If you don't like it, fine. But guess what? They're selling records, so they must be doing something right.

Lots of bands have major talent, but sometimes that makes them so unique that they only appeal to a very select audience, and therefore stay smalltime. For example, lots of the "underground" metal bands nowadays, to me, sounds like a jumble of guitars and drums, and a guy puking onto the microphone. It really doesn't appeal to me. Does that mean I have no musical taste? No. It means I have different tastes in music than the next person. But I do acknowledge the band's talent.

gackt is sort of "selling out", but he is successful and a lot of people love him. people are probably very jealous of him...

Favorites are hard for me to pick because I enjoy listening to anything besides most rap and country... but I do know I'm a heavy metal and classical kind of guy

Very good point about bands that lose their members or simply get shifted around too much.As used as this example is,Manson for example has had quite a few guitar changes in the past 10 years,with each new guitarst comes a complelty different sound,message may differ yet over al the sound is much different.As with most bands,new material is sounds different then old.John 5 compared to Zim Zum is a 180 degree shift in range of sound,as i see it Zim was more of a hard "thrash" rocker,where as John was more of a controlled player.Now thats not to say Manson didnt have anything to do with this,Johns solo album is far different then his Manson ones,now im getting off topic.Anyone agree?.With that in mind the notion of "selling out" occurs often,if a band cant stay together to produce music then why are they a "band" in the first place.

Considering how a few others here listen to metal,my input may be valueable.
