Playstation 3 or Xbox?

Obviously Halo 3 is an fps, while FF XIII isn't simply an RPG, nor is MGS4 "just" tactical espionage action, they're both promised epics.

I've never been too fond of Microsoft's gaming division, but the 360 is a better buy for the average gamer. Even then Halo and Guitar Hero is all I really play on it. The Wii is a complete waste of time. If you want my advice, just get some PC games and be done with all the console controversy business.

Yes, epics where the majority of the fan base went to either the Wii, XBOX 360, and/or PC since Sony isn't pulling out a lot of decent titles as of late. Most of them are third party ports that aren't that great compared to the originals on the 360 or PC. Fact of the matter is that Sony is really gambling their market shares up just to have a complicated and expensive machine to program that only produces shiny visuals in the end. Konami even came out and stated if they don't sell one million copies of MGS4 on the first day that they will seek "alternative options" to gain back the heavy development costs for the game. Either Sony gets their heads out of their collective asses, and make a better hardware and software line up that isn't raping you in price and is a rip off of something else, or they will end up being a dead duck in water before the end of it all.

I think that you know not a fig what you're talking about. Please try to contribute to a thread in which you have some decent knowledge to share, without your axe to grind :)

So you are denying that the market shares for Microsoft and Nintendo are less than Sony? Stop being a fanboy. I really wanted the system, I really did. However, MGS4 and GT5 aren't good enough reasons to buy the damn thing. You need to have a strong library, and all the other consoles except Sony have done just that. Furthermore, if you think I am lying about selling one million units out the door on day one for MGS4 you're wrong.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=26071991

Sony might pull it off in the end, but you have to have an extremely high optimism for such beliefs. Many of the ports to 360 games are crap, The Orange Box in particular. I'm not a Microsoft fanboy (I hate the company to be honest with their crappy computer software), but my money goes to them at the current moment with video games. If you don't like it, then too bad. The majority of people who are sticking with Sony right now are fanboys. You know it is true too, so stop denying it. I know too many people who bought a PS3, and then sold it off for a 360 instead. Furthermore, PS3s have been known to have a higher failure rate than 360s and Wiis, and only about 10% of previous PSX and PS2 are playable on the older versions of the system (the new model of course has no back wards compatibility at all). With the current price tag, failure rates, lack of back wards compatibility, and poor game library it is no wonder people are looking elsewhere.

If Sony can make it up in the coming years, they may still have a fighting chance of winning this console war. If they do, then I will be willing to buy a PS3. Until then, I'm spending my money elsewhere.

So if you want me to contribute to this thread so badly then I suggest people buy a 360, or save their money until the PS3 fares better.

So you are denying that the market shares for Microsoft and Nintendo are less than Sony?

You have some good points but you express them very poorly. I know (I think!) what you meant to mean - but what you actually wrote does not convey that meaning!!

The example I've quoted explains a lot - Microsoft and Nintendo actually have a bigger market share right now.

Lol what? PS3 has higher fail rate than the Xbox? Thats something new to me, perhaps you forgot about the red ring of death?
Its quite the opposite.
Sony loses cash on each PS3, they can't afford to flood the market with rubbish such as the Xbox.
This is a mere google search, but please look for yourself: xbox 360 failure rate - Google-keresés

Obviously the numbers are way too high, unreal, but still that doesn't change the fact that, even if it isn't 60%, the Xbox has a damn high failure rate.
Also whats with the Backward compatibility complaining?
1, if you wan't it, buy the expensive model.
2, plenty of PS2 games work, more than 10%, way more.
Also, its worth checking the exclusives library
The Games - GameFront

And another deciding factor
Final Fantasy XIII & XIII Versus
-------------------------
Microsoft Xbox / 0 (yes zero, zilch, zil)
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Sony Playstation 3 / 1 (as you can see)

Undeniable.

And you shouldn't forget the PS3's 7 core processor.
In all honesty, its a fight between quality and price.
The Xbox is just another little thing for counter strike kids to drool to.
AHMYGAWD HALO 3?
IDK! FPS = no story, no depth, nothing.
The only FPS I care about is frame per second in my anime, and not first person shooters. Many PS3 fans think alike, no wonder there are people who buy the console because of Square-Enix.

Actually, the overall failure rate has lessened in the past six months since Microsoft got sued last year for faulty systems. Granted the Elite has its problems, but the regular editions of the system have been fixed with better, smaller parts to keep the system cooler. Furthermore, if you do get the red ring of death, Microsoft will personally replace your system for free with the new three year warranty covering all systems. Lately, as the failure rate has gone down on 360s, it has gone up on PS3s. The NPD survey group among many others sited these problems, and they yet to be addressed by Sony.

As for backwards compatibility, the rough estimate is still 10%. Many gaming news sources have cited this. The main stay for many PS2 fans was the backwards compatibility. However, considering that Sony kept their promise just as much as Microsoft did, it is no wonder there are grumbles going on. As for your list of exclusives, that doesn't mean anything. Sure Sony has some good games coming down the pike, but the library still isn't as expansive as the 360 is. Think about it. The user base of the PS3 is roughly six million gamers. The Nintendo Wii has beaten that already with over eight to ten million, and the 360 is even higher than that. Why do you think that is? I'll tell you why, the benchmark exclusives that Sony has isn't cutting it anymore. Oh look, MGS4! Look there, FFXIII! Oh and don't forget GT5! Yes, they're all great series, but to spend money on just a few good titles doesn't warranty the purchase. Furthermore, Sony has been selling their system to the public more as a cheap Blu-ray player than a video game console. Fact of the matter is, nobody cares. Most gamers buy video game systems for video games not movies. If you don't believe me, then by all means just the stats with the NPD Group among others to see for yourself.

As for the hardware, so what? It has a seven celled processor. That doesn't mean squat in the eyes of a developer. Did you know the reason why GTAIV was delayed was because of the hardware difficulties of the PS3 version of the game? Furthermore, did you know that it costs much more money to develop a flashy game on the PS3 than it is on the other consoles? Did you also know that the 360's hardware has the ability to make better A.I. and scripted events in games over the PS3? The PS3 has graphical power I'll give you that, but most developers don't want to dump the cash into it. Furthermore, many of the 360 games ported over to the PS3 have issues that are inexcusable for the PS3's so called "grandiose" hardware. The fact of the matter is that Sony overshot their goals on making the baddest *** hardware in this console war. The effects are hurting them. By the time Sony starts to make major money on the whole thing, Microsoft and Nintendo will have new systems out, and be in the next console war.

As for your comments on Halo, don't make me laugh. "Oooh that's the only reason why people buy the system!" No it isn't. People buy the system because of XBOX Live and the library of games offered. I'd rather spend $50 a year on a quality gaming service, then have a free service from Sony that isn't worth all the hype. Halo may make a lot of sales on this system, but games like Assassins Creed, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Bioshock, Forza Motorsports 2, and a slew of others make the bulk of sales. Furthermore, many of the PS3 "exclusives" are now on the 360, and some of them actually play better too. Whether you like it or not, the 360 has become what the PS2 had been in last console war. Will the PS3 make a lot of sales in the end? It depends. A lot of naysayers felt that the XBOX wouldn't do anything, but once the PS2 started to show its age with the hardware in last legs of the console war, the XBOX ended up pulling out on top.

Your comments automatically show that you are a Sony fanboy. There is no reason to be a fanboy of any system. Each has their own pros and cons that people go with. I would love to have a PS3, but much like many of the 360 users who were once PS2 freaks, much has yet to be seen before a purchase can be made. Talk to any XBOX Live user and they'll tell you that. If Sony is so on top of the game, then why is it so easy for me to walk into a store right now to buy one, when in the same store I have a hard time acquiring a 360 or Wii? Sony is not doing too hot, and three landmark titles aren't enough for a purchase of the system. You need more of those select titles in the library for it to be a quality purchase for the price you have to pay. Until Sony does so, it's nothing more than a cheap Blu-ray player in the eyes of many gamers.

All I am doing is giving constructive criticism to the issue. If Sony could fix some of the glaring problems standing in front of them, they could pull it off in retaining their number one spot. However, they are in the red ink right now, spending billions on a console that constantly makes them lose money on every system being manufactured. Developers don't like making games for it because the hardware is too complicated and costly to make a quality game for it. Plus, the user base has eroded away overtime with only a few select titles that Sony can really tote up. The future doesn't look too rosy for them right now. Square is now back in bed with Nintendo (and MS is getting in on some of the action too), MGS4 has a strong fan base but not as big as other franchises, and Forza has put a pretty good dent in the Gran Turismo crowd with their latest game. It will be interesting to see how things all pan out in the future. The gaming industry truly is a dynamic industry.

You got it wrong, im not a Sony fanboy, im more like a Square/Konami fanboy. I'd much prefer their games to be on the PS3, but if that ain't possible, i'll just get any console, be it the Wii, Xbox or even Sega Megadrive, I don't care how, I will get it.

On the other hand, a while ago Sony's share of the console market was roughly 17%, over 1.5-2 months they took another 2 percents, so its over 19 now. A good omen indeed.

Keep in mind that might go down. Something that surveyors never publish is the sell back rate of games and systems. I should know. The rate of used copies of Halo 2 sold back to gaming stores was higher than the base rate of owners of the game. It got to the point where Halo 2 wasn't even worth anything anymore on a trade in. Kind of funny if you ask me.

Didn't know about that, but if thats so, the same rule applies to all consoles.

Exactly so, which is why I keep saying that Sony might make it in the end. It all depends on the market and what gamers want. I do hope that the PS3 does fare better in the long run.

My biggest concern is the battle system of FF XIII and VS.
Gief turn based! They keep scaring people with real time battles. Dirty!
I don't care about the console war as long as I get the exclusives lol. Although I thought of buying a DS, the touch screen is interesting.
On the other hand, perhaps I have another concern too. Unlocking the PS3 processor, yeah, I would love that, If someone could hack it all. Compared to my Pc, the PS3 is a powerhouse, although I don't really know If there are many video editing tools and such that work under linux.

from now utill two years to come it is Xbox...since it has signed all major games that are awesome to it...

after that it is PS3...coz it is way more advanced faster, more capable...can provide twice as better graphics...and Xbox can not produce a better console in that time...
while PS3 will be featuring all the great games with the great graphics...

I would go as far as saying twice as better graphics, in fact, from what I heard, although the PS3 is stronger graphics-wise, the Xbox can display more moving polygons.
Although, yes, obviously the PS3 is a powerhouse.

Don't buy Xbox!!

First of all if you buy an Xbox it will fail on you the red ring of death kills your The Xbox 360 has a 30% failure rate the industry standard is only 1-3% failure rate for electronics. Xbox has been proven by science that it scratches discs I will provide a link. And it is more expensive then the PS3 when you add up all the costs to buy the extra parts for the Xbox to even come close to what Sony already has built in it plus Blue Ray. I bet if you ask anybody that owns an Xbox on this forum they either had their Xbox brick on them with the RROD or they have a bunch of scratched discs.
Scientific proof Xbox is a faulty system.

I would still buy it if the games were a bit better, but as things now are, I don't need an Xbox.

the Japanese industry is so great with making perfections..and that is what i call the PS3

while the American industry has hard time even catching up....
the next release of PS will beat what ever Xbox is made..i can tell you that...
the Xbox will have to work on bettering it self on a different base other than graphics...
like when Nintendo found that it is way behind in the graphics competition it worked on the console play system ..and made Wii (better gaming..revolutionary controller...but PS1 graphics...)

Nintendo screwed it all when it was b1tching about censoring Final Fantasy... come on, whats there to censure in FF?
Now regarding the topic.
Nice, the Wii is nice, but its a toy, obviously it is. It is meant for casual gamers, not the hardcore no life, sick, necrophil, paranoid, evil game addicts. *proudly makes the metal sign*

Well Cathy (Eponine on here) and I have got both a 360, PSP (both hers) and a PS3 (mine). The 360 recently died with the dreaded red ring of death, MS 'repaired' it and sent it back still broken and now we have to send it back again.

She's probably going to sell it since they're not replacing it with the fixed model, just another version which will likely break again, but it depends how much she might get etc.

Certainly up until now the xbox has been a great console, it has some excellent titles on it. 2008 looks like its shaping up to be the year of the PS3/Sony tho- Bluray seems set to become the defacto next gen standard (since Warner Bros went solely bluray about 48 hours ago) and there are some absolutely awesome games coming out in the next 6 months.

Including LittleBigPlanet, which looks like its going to be better than everything else in the universe combined and then doubled.

credit of the list goes to stunt @ps3forums. Doc, why dont you read this list and say the ps3's titles fail. All i'am going to say is that 2008 is the PS3's year. End of story.

It might and it might not be. It all depends on the quality of the titles themselves that will depend on whether or not it will garner any interest. As of right now XBOX 360: 17.7 million, Nintendo Wii: 8-10 million, and PS3: roughly 6 million.

There may be a few of highlighted titles, but that means nothing in the grand scheme of things. It is quality of the titles in large quantities that matters for the exclusives, not the quantity of big name titles that may have little or no quality. Unfortunately, many of the exclusives released so far on the system are decent at best. Many if not most of the flagship titles (SOCOM, MGS, GT, FF) are just not enough to hold the interests of die hard fans of such titles. The name means nothing, its quality in large quantities that matters. Like I said, if Sony can pull off some quality titles in a quantitative load, and not just for the name sake of the titles themselves, they might just pull through. Only time will tell.

@karlyboo

Only 14% of gamers use their systems for watching movies. In other words, WB going Blu-ray doesn't mean jack in the grand scheme of things for gamers.

Bit short sighted, IMO. Sony's major gambit this generation was increasing the likelihood of Bluray being adopted as the nextgen standard at the expense of making their console initially less appealing due to a higher price tag by bundling the two together ($100 extra). If in fact they get away with that (as it looks like they might, if this news from Warner is any indication) then not only is the long-term plan for said console justified but they're liable to be able to cut production costs (again) for game developers as a further investment in the future of the console, thanks to the security provided by licensing fees from Bluray disks.

In short, I'd argue Sony have very much tied the futures of Bluray and the Playstation 3 together. I'm sure one could very well survive without the other, but success for one can only be of benefit to the other.

Yes, but that is also Sony's weakness. They have been toting their system a cheap Blu-ray player instead of a gaming machine. This has helped contribute to a lack of sales. With all the latest data, it has been sighted that gamers care more about games than watching moves on their console. Granted, it looks like Blu-ray will win the new format war on movies, but don't expect people to be up in arms until it becomes the new standard for a few years. Until that point is reached, Sony better start selling their system as a gaming machine, and not a media machine if they want to place first in the end of this console war.
