Onomatopoeia 「しっぽ しっぽ」

Hello,

Please kindly help me with 「しっぽ しっぽ」 in the sentence below:

やましごとを していると しっぽ しっぽ あめが ふってきた

Maybe しっぽ しっぽ is like sound of rain drops when it touches tree leaves and
I can translate sentence as:

When he works at the mountain, it started to rain.

Another little bit difficulty is やましごと. I translated is as "work at the mountain"
But I found that another meaning could be "ceremonies and customs in the Southern Islands of Japan". But according to book pictures it seems that young man just cut the trees.

I haven't ever heard the mimetic word しっぽしっぽ. Probably it's the author's coined word. As for 山仕事[やましごと], your interpretation "work at the mountain" is correct.

This is just off the top of my head, but isn't it しょぼしょぼ? If so, しょぼしょぼ あめが ふってきた means "it started to drizzle".
