This is pretty amazing. It almost sounds as if we've jumped forward fifty years. I mean, I just don't know what else to say.

"Playstation 3 Diet", anyone?

Today, a system like this sounds futuristic. A super-console, replacing TV, computer, game console and complete home electronics system in one wont be cheap. Rumors are making rounds that the PS3 will be sold in two versions, one that is the do-all Playstation 3 version with all the bells and whistles (perhaps including laying golden eggs as well?) and one that is, yikes(!), just a pure video game console.

Oh, but that's just part of the story. Read it all at Playstation Reporter.

Eh... I'm not buying that rumour.. Doesn't seem likely.. And once again I must say.. Why would I want my game console to repeat a bunch of things I already have? Just seems useless.. I wish gaming companies would stick to being gaming companies.. Can't even imagine what the price would be.. Most will have to sell their houses.. Ah well.. Just have to wait I suppose.. Time will tell.. Heh.. Till then, I'm not buying it..

Supposedly it's slated for release next year. It seems legit to me. I mean, they interviewed the companies involved.

Also, the author seems to want it to just be a gaming system, too. But this looks like it will be revolutionary for computing in all areas.

[Edit] Also, the Japanese media has been reporting it too, so you could always cross-reference.

Believe it or not, but it ain't a rumor....I heard about the chip before...oh yeah...a while ago a Dutch inventor invented a device that was able trough algorythems to achieve a communication speed WAY more faster than ever achieved, unfortunately he died and his source code to the thing was unfindable....it's supposed to be out there somewhere....and the one who would have it would be the worlds most richest man....(even Bill Gates wouldn't have the amount of money)...so things as the cell-chip and the technology they say is possible...if you see what we achieved in 10 years...it's unimaginable what will come next !!!!! ☝

Now you're really totally exaggerating! I really don't see why it should be futuristic? You can already have that today. Take a current PC with an actual graphics card, put in a TV card, plug in some boxes and that's it - your multi-purpose TV-computer-game-engine. The PS3 won't do much more either.

Also the bit with the "1000 times faster than PS2" is no big deal. The PS2 uses a very outdated 300MHz slow-as-hell-chip (compared to todays standards). Now if they take a chip with advanced 64bit-architecture (like the current Athlon 64) produced with 0.09 SOI in Low-k (which is also already used), together with a good graphics chip (like the current Ati X800 Pro), then this really shouldn't be the least problem.

I am looking forward to its launch!
However, I think that if the PS3 will be better than PS2, what about the games? Will they improve too with greater graphics, digital etc??? Maybe network connection so it is possible to play against your friends?
I think the graphics in the PS2 are satisfying now, but they can get better??

repeat after me king of tokyo... Sony manufactures tv's, radios, and video game materials. But they were doing tv's and radios beforehand. Making it so that they aren't really making anything new and great.

one more thing about speed... lets say it did go more than 300,000 megahertz..... wouldn't that be as fast as light.. come on people. what frequency is light.. 1 terahertz? The greatest thing they could do with graphics is make it look exactly life like and no more. Plus if sony wanted to do something really kick @$$ they would allow people to connect to the internet through the electrical line held by posts outside by just plugging into an electrical outlet with your ps3. now that would be something neat to see. I think if they wanted to really really impress me, they would have a system that could mess with the electrical impulses interpreted by my central nervous system to create a virtual reality world.

I agree, I've been waiting for a system like that. I think people are working on it, but keeping it Top Secret. J/k. Has, anyone seen the movie "Existenz". The gaming system in the movie is as advanced as you can get. But, the movie says a lot about advancing technology too much. Perhaps, "there are some things man are never to tamper with" OweeOoooo hahahahalolz :D

The wavelength of light is 1Hz. 1Hz is a 186,000 mile wavelength. 186,000mi/sec is speed of light.

[Edit] Since all waves in the electromagnetic spectrum to which light belongs travel at the speed of light, saying that light's frequency is 1Hz isn't really right. But the frequency that has a wavelength that matches the speed light travels is 1Hz.

Don't think so...I read about it and it's not that fast, only 1MBit/s that's ~120kb/s...for streaming applications it's just not fast enough...
It's a pretty nice concept tho !

You can read about it here:

kk...let me explain what MBit and MB mean 😌

1 MBit is not the same as 1 MB to start with ;-)
1 byte = 8 bits
1 Mega Bit = ~1.048.576 bits
1000 000/8 = 125 000 so it's 125 000 bytes that's 125 kilobytes thus 125kb/s transfer rate

(Mbps used for networks mainly, to express the capacity)

1 Mega Byte = ~1.048.576 bytes
(used for disk capacity mainly)

so 1 MegaByte = 1000 kilobytes or 1 000 000 bytes

and 125 kb/s = 125 kilobytes or 125 000 bytes

to get a download of 1 MB/s you need a 10 MBit
connection.

playstation have always made the crap seem good. remember the ps1? IT PLAYED CD'S!!! i thought big deal, N64 owns over playstation. but still the ps1 was popular cos it PLAYED CD'S and N64 didn't. i heard stories of sales assistants recommending customers buy playstations instead of cd players because PLAYSTATIONS PLAYED CD'S!!!

enter ps2. IT PLAYS DVD'S!!! (& CD'S!!!). well sure, that's great. except these days dvd players play dvd, dvd-r, dvd-rw, dvd-blahblah, dvd-blahblahblah, mp3, jpeg, wav, cd, cd-r, and cd-rw. now all the ps2 owners who love burning games realise there's no point in getting a dvd burner since their much loved all-in-one console won't recognise them. so HA i say. HA HA HA. :p

Yes, Yes and Yes. You said it all too well.

Post 400. I rule.

Well, I won't really care about it, or any future console until release time. I too, was swayed by Sony's pretty little hype machine pre PS2 and have to say that I feel that things would have been a little different had Sony not tried to be first out of the gate. Remember when our buddy Kaz said that the PS2 would be capable of Toy Story 2 type quality real time rendering? Did that ever happen? Hell no.

So, before you label me as a hater, know this.. I love my PS2, I prefer it over my X-Box, but NOT my GC. To me, the GC is the perfect system, even if Ninny is too insane to see the potential it has.

What I want for PS3?

Simple.

Network Card built in.

AT LEAST 32 MB of RAM.

A BUTTLOAD OF VRAM.

A B U I L T I N H D D .

And actually make the damned thing easy for developers this time around, huh?

Thank you, I now pass the soapbox to someone else.

Straight and to the point. The success was due to good marketing, while the console itself was only mediocre. There were much better consoles at the time, like the Jaguar and the DreamStation. Sadly, the marketing for the Jaguar sucked really bad, and they couldn't convince developers either, so it drowned pretty fast. The DreamStation already had better marketing, but still not as good as the PS, so it was eventually cancelled.

@ Lina Universe

Do you mean dream cast? I agree I think it was really good I wonder what went wrong, it was positively awesome

Remember that before the PS2 came out, Sony was promising games with "Toy Story" quality graphics and all kinds of other nonsense that never came true. The PS2, though, damned awesome, and I have no doubt that the PS3 will be even better.

Now, who else is ready for the PSP? 😍

Hope you're ready to shell out $350 USD.

I'm straight Nintendo, Always have been, Always will be. PSP doesn't interest me. I'm waiting for the DS.

I just like good games - I'm forunate enough to be able to afford quality hardware. I'll be buying both the DS and the PSP. I have a friend who's working on a team that's porting their game to the PSP and he's been telling me how awesome it is. I'll pay up to $350. I seriously doubt it will be that expensive though. I'm expecting about $250... that sets it about $100 more than the DS. That should work well.

Sadly, I'm probably going to have to shell out the cash for TWO DSs. I'm not too keen on sharing mine with my boy.

Nope. They announced it in Tokyo that the price would be (Amount I can't remember) En. I changed it from en to CAD and USD.. It'll be 350. So far anyway.. But if you can afford that's good.. Heh.
