MEXT Scholarship 2016 (Research)

Those placed at privates listed no other schools?

I'm interested in learning about this process even though my first and second choices are national unis... lol
Nope, they both had public/national universities listed as well. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason for MEXT's decisions...maybe it's related to the applicant's country...

I guess we have to remember they only have a limited amount of funding and every applicant they send to a private uni takes money away from someone else. So maybe they look at whether the applicant has a justified reason for the research to be done at the private uni over the others.

Or maybe they just pick names out of a hat, but it's not for us to know! haha

On a different note, I want to apply for MEXT this year and am quite torn about whether to attempt the university recommendation or just have patience and wait for the embassy round. People say that the uni recommendation has "better odds", but I honestly think the candidates there will be better prepared on average than the embassy candidates, as they've already managed to find a supervisor. And my contacts are at big-name universities, so the competition there will be worse.

Did anyone have problems getting the health form done? I've just been looking at the required documents and that stuck out to me because it seems like there are a lot of tests on there. I mean, chest x-ray and ECG seems a bit beyond a normal check-up!?

I've spent so long researching MEXT I could write a research proposal for MEXT about it. "The inner workings of the MEXT scholarship" lol.

Hello friends.... Can you please enlighten me what will the MEXT SECOND SCREENING be about ?? thank you in advance :)

Well we have now reached September - the point after which my local Japanese Consulate General has advised to NOT contact anymore schools. There remain a few long shot schools looking over my papers and I've received two already. Ready to submit to the consulate the ones I have now and whatever extras might come in before the 24th (my deadline for LOAs)

Thought I'd give an update here too. I have received one LOA from my first choice (Kyoto Institute of Technology) and just waiting to receive a second from my other choice (Gifu University). I will only be submitting two LOA's so I hope that will be good enough. My deadline for submitting to the Consulate General in Vancouver is September 18.

Am i the only one who still dont have any LOAs yet? All of the universities that i've applied to only issue an LOA in mid to late September, and there is a possibility that they would not accept me though. 3 of 4 univ that i have applied to are private univ. since its difficult to find national university that have a product / fashion design course which suitable to my research.
If the worst case happened (i didnt get any LOAs), is there still any possibility to get the schorlarship?

I have already received LoAs from Kyoto University (2nd choice) and TMU (3rd choice), and I have submitted them to the embassy together with the preference form.

I still have to wait until September 14 when the result from Todai (1st choice) is announced, which will decide whether I will get the LoA from them or not. Luckily, the embassy in my country allow me to send the last LoA after their deadline (September 15), as long as I provide them with correspondence prove (email conversation) with Todai 😅

So, I could only waiting and praying for now .. :cold:

Don't worry, I don't have any LOA's yet either. I'm waiting my results from my first choice maybe next week, and I sent to 2 other universities but I don't have the highest hopes... Even if they do accept me, I'm not sure I'll get the letter in time since they don't send it my email =X I hope I can convince them to send me a scanned copy! Good luck with your results!

Good luck for us! today i just received an email from kyushu professor, she said she would accept my application. Not my priority tough, but still kinda relieving! now i am waiting a reply from the rest university.

Hi, Mustafa. Good luck to you to :D

Hi ardhi, you're the one who add me in facebook right? salam kenal hehe.
is it hard to get a LoA from TMU? TMU just replied my mail and they would review my documents first. its kinda silly that I was contacting the professor only, tough we should send the application trough post mail. Glad that they still allow me to send my document by e-mail after the deadline passed. Hope i will hear the good news from them soon.

Hi, Mustafa. Yes, I'm the same person on FB :D
I got LoA from TMU after contacting the professor, as well as their International Affair Office. They indeed need you to send the documents by post or PDF files and review your application. In my case, it took around 2 weeks before they approve my application and sent the LoA.

Good luck. I hope you also get the LoA from them soon 👍

I wish the best for us all 😅

Hey guys! Nice to know that everyone is doing fine and receiving their LoAs. I would like to update my status as well, I have received my three LoAs and they will be sent to my country in the following days (Postal service here sucks), anyone aiming for Keio University, Nagoya University or Waseda University too?

I still haven't heard anything from our Embassy of Japan about the deadline to delivery the physical LoAs, but we were asked to send them a scanned version by September 11th, do you guys know when is the estimated date when the Embassies of Japan start sending our application documents to Japan for the second screening?

Congratulations for getting the LoAs ... 2 weeks ago i needed to change something inside my application form so i inquired the embassy about that matter ...The embassy said at this point we cannot change a single word regarding your documents because we (The embassy) had already sent them to Tokyo ... my point is our documents are in Japan now ... So from now and on we need to start praying :)

Hi everyone,
I have been nominated through embassy recommendation (Pakistan) for MEXT and obtained acceptance letter from Tohoku University and Kyushu university .I am going for Masters in biomedical engineering.

Hi everyone,
Congratulations to everyone that has been recommended as well as those that have received letters of acceptance already.

I found out yesterday that I passed the entrance examinations and have a letter of acceptance on it's way to the embassy in London. I'll be starting a masters in mathematics at Shizuoka university in April (assuming I pass the second screening).

I was just wondering if there was anybody else on this forum that is heading to Shizuoka or anybody that's off to Japan to study mathematics? It would be nice to be in contact.

Good look to anyone that's still hunting for letters or those that are hoping to apply in the future.

Hello everyne,
I am new to this thread.
I have just a few questions that I hope someone here can help me with
I am currently studying at a private language school in Japan and I am interested in a research degree in Journalism. I have a bachelors degree in journalism from an American University.
Because I cannot go though the American embassy due to the fact that I am living in Japan, what is the best way to apply for the MEXT scholarship?
Contact the school directly? I was thinking Waseda University because they offer a Journalism Masters.
How did you guys find teachers to sponsor you? Did you just randomly email teavhers you found online from the University?
Sorry this is all new to me and there isn't too much info on the net about it.
thanks a lot.

Hello ...
Regarding your questions ...There are 2 types of MEXT scholarship 1- Embassy recommendation 2- University recommendation ... In your case, I'd suggest you to go for the second one.
Regarding finding the professor and inquire about the scholarship ... you can simply contact the University's Student Affair Division, they will guide you properly ... Even they might provide you with a link contains the prospective professors data base ...
Good luck :) ...

Hello everyone! Congratulations for passing the primary screening. I have received two LoAs from Tohoku University and Gifu University. Hopefully we can pass the secondary screening...

To be honest, I have never heard of anyone being rejected on the secondary screening.
It really doesn't make any sense: you have gone through the primary screening AND the universities have already accepted you. Now, if you haven't got any LoAs, they might not let you pass, but with LoAs, it should be a 100% guarantee.

Take a look through the "MEXT Scholarship 2015 (Research Students)" thread, starting around late-October to early-January you will see all the people who didn't pass (those on JRef, not counting all others).
That is why you will notice, each Embassy says something like "...IF you are selected by MEXT..." because the Embassy screening (primary screening) is just the first part.
There is still the second screening, conducted by MEXT home office in Tokyo. After that, there is the final screening. What's the difference? The second screening takes place before MEXT contacts the universities on your list. The final screening takes place after they contact the universities, when they decide whether/where to place you.

This isn't meant to discourage anyone...but be aware of the process! Nothing is guaranteed yet! :-) 頑張って!

I'll take a look, thanks.

I don't know, I've monitored the previous 4 years in my country, and not a single time was anyone denied after passing the primary screening and obtaining a LoA. One person was denied due to not having any LoA at all.

I know nothing is sure, but the chances are very slim. Hope so, at least.
